Bit depth

The number of bits used to encode each audio sample in a digital audio system, determining the dynamic range and quantization noise floor. A bit depth of n bits provides a theoretical dynamic range of approximately 6n dB (e.g., 16-bit audio ≈ 96 dB; 24-bit audio ≈ 144 dB). CD audio uses 16-bit depth
