Peak Power Analysis
Sprint power separates the fastest finishers - understanding peak power helps identify strengths and training targets.
Sprint Power Benchmarks
- WorldTour sprinter: 1600-2000W peak (20+ W/kg)
- Professional sprinter: 1400-1600W peak
- Strong amateur: 1200-1400W peak
- Category racer: 1000-1200W peak
- Recreational cyclist: 800-1000W peak
Power Duration for Sprints
- 5-second power: Neuromuscular peak, true sprint ability
- 15-second power: Anaerobic capacity, longer sprints
- 30-second power: Sustained sprint, anaerobic endurance
- 1-minute power: VO2max range, not pure sprint
Sprint Power Profile
Some sprinters peak instantly (high 5-sec), others sustain power longer (high 15-sec). Match sprint length to your profile - explosive sprinters want short sprints, diesel engines want longer buildups.
Improving Sprint Power
- Low-cadence strength intervals
- High-cadence sprint intervals
- Standing start sprints
- Weight room strength training
- Neuromuscular work (very short, maximal efforts)
