The Art of Distance Control
Boxing has three primary ranges: long (jab range), medium (combination range), and close (inside fighting). Elite fighters dictate which range the fight takes place at.
The Three Ranges
- Long Range - Jab and straight punch distance, favors longer reach
- Mid Range - Ideal combination distance, most punches available
- Close Range - Inside fighting, uppercuts and short hooks, clinch work
Range Advantage Analysis
- Reach Differential - Physical advantage in inches
- Height Advantage - Affects angles and punch trajectories
- Style Preference - Does fighter succeed at preferred range?
- Range Transitions - Ability to move between ranges effectively
Strategic Implications
- Longer fighter should maintain distance with jab and footwork
- Shorter fighter must close distance to negate reach advantage
- Controlling preferred range correlates with higher punch accuracy
- Forcing opponent into uncomfortable range creates advantages
