Economy Rate in Cricket
Economy rate measures how many runs a bowler concedes per over. It is crucial in limited-overs cricket for building pressure.
Format-Specific Economy Benchmarks
- Test Cricket: 2.5-3.0 runs per over is good control
- ODI Cricket: 4.5-5.0 is excellent, 5.5-6.0 is acceptable
- T20 Cricket: 6.5-7.5 is good, 8.0-9.0 is average
Analyzing Economy by Phase
- Powerplay Economy: First 6 overs (T20) or 10 overs (ODI)
- Middle Overs: Building pressure when batsmen look to accelerate
- Death Overs: Damage limitation (last 5 overs)
- Compare economy in each phase to identify strengths
Improving Economy Rate
- Bowl consistent line and length
- Vary pace and use slower balls effectively
- Bowl to your field settings
- Practice yorkers and other defensive deliveries
- Analyze batsmen weaknesses and exploit them
