Breakaway Analytics

Understanding breakaway dynamics helps predict success and optimize effort distribution.

Breakaway Success Factors

  • Time gap to peloton vs distance remaining
  • Number of teams with sprinters left behind
  • Cooperation level in the break
  • Terrain ahead (climbs favor breaks)
  • Wind direction and speed

Power Requirements

  • Establishing break: 110-130% FTP for 2-5 minutes
  • Sustaining break: 85-95% FTP for extended periods
  • Peloton chase: 75-85% FTP (drafting advantage)
  • Late break attacks: 105-115% FTP

The Math of Gaps

A break needs roughly 1 minute per 10km remaining to survive. With 50km to go, a 5-minute gap is marginal. Teams can chase at lower power due to drafting - a motivated peloton almost always catches breaks on flat finishes.

Optimal Breakaway Strategy

  • Go in early breaks on hard courses
  • Attack when peloton is disorganized
  • Ensure cooperation (compatible goals)
  • Save energy for final 20km
  • Attack late from break if possible
