Passes Allowed Per Defensive Action (PPDA)

PPDA is a metric that quantifies a team's pressing intensity by measuring how many passes an opponent makes before the defending team attempts a defensive action.

Understanding PPDA

PPDA = Opponent Passes / Defensive Actions

Where defensive actions include:

  • Tackles
  • Interceptions
  • Fouls
  • Challenges

PPDA Zones

PPDA is typically calculated for the attacking two-thirds of the pitch:

  • High Press: PPDA < 7 (very intense pressing)
  • Medium Press: PPDA 7-10 (moderate pressing)
  • Low Press: PPDA > 10 (minimal pressing)

Tactical Implications

Teams with low PPDA values typically:

  • Press high up the pitch
  • Force opponents into mistakes
  • Win possession in dangerous areas
  • Require high fitness levels
  • Risk leaving space behind defense

Examples from Top Leagues

  • Liverpool (Klopp): ~7.5 PPDA (high intensity)
  • Man City (Guardiola): ~8.5 PPDA (controlled press)
  • Atletico (Simeone): ~11 PPDA (selective pressing)
