Passes Allowed Per Defensive Action (PPDA)
PPDA is a metric that quantifies a team's pressing intensity by measuring how many passes an opponent makes before the defending team attempts a defensive action.
Understanding PPDA
PPDA = Opponent Passes / Defensive Actions
Where defensive actions include:
- Tackles
- Interceptions
- Fouls
- Challenges
PPDA Zones
PPDA is typically calculated for the attacking two-thirds of the pitch:
- High Press: PPDA < 7 (very intense pressing)
- Medium Press: PPDA 7-10 (moderate pressing)
- Low Press: PPDA > 10 (minimal pressing)
Tactical Implications
Teams with low PPDA values typically:
- Press high up the pitch
- Force opponents into mistakes
- Win possession in dangerous areas
- Require high fitness levels
- Risk leaving space behind defense
Examples from Top Leagues
- Liverpool (Klopp): ~7.5 PPDA (high intensity)
- Man City (Guardiola): ~8.5 PPDA (controlled press)
- Atletico (Simeone): ~11 PPDA (selective pressing)
