COBOL Language Questions

Question 1: What is the difference between COMP, COMP-3, and DISPLAY usage?

DISPLAY is the default usage in COBOL. Each digit occupies one byte, stored in the character representation of the platform (EBCDIC on mainframes, ASCII on distributed systems). A PIC 9(5) DISPLAY field uses 5 bytes. DISPLAY fields are human-readable when you examine storage directly.

This defines a signed numeric field with 7 integer digits, an implied decimal point (V), and 2 decimal digits. The total is 9 digits plus a sign. In COMP-3 (packed decimal), the storage formula is: (number of digits + 1) / 2, rounded up. So (9 + 1) / 2 = 5 bytes. The implied decimal point (V) does not consume storage -- it tells the compiler where to align the decimal during arithmetic operations. This field can hold values from -9999999.99 to +9999999.99.

Question 3: What is the difference between PERFORM UNTIL and PERFORM VARYING?

PERFORM UNTIL executes a paragraph or inline block repeatedly until a condition becomes true. The condition is tested before each iteration (with the TEST BEFORE default) or after each iteration (with TEST AFTER). It is the general-purpose loop construct.

PERFORM VARYING adds automatic counter management. It initializes a counter variable, tests a condition, executes the body, and increments (or decrements) the counter each iteration. Question 4: Explain the EVALUATE statement and how it differs from nested IF statements.

EVALUATE is COBOL's case/switch construct, introduced in COBOL-85. It tests a subject against multiple values and executes the corresponding block. EVALUATE is cleaner and more maintainable than nested IF statements for multi-way branching. It supports EVALUATE TRUE (testing multiple conditions), EVALUATE with ALSO (testing multiple subjects simultaneously), and THRU ranges. EVALUATE also guarantees that exactly one WHEN branch executes -- the first one that matches -- followed by a fall-through to the statement after END-EVALUATE.

Question 5: What is the difference between SECTION and PARAGRAPH in the PROCEDURE DIVISION?

A PARAGRAPH is named by a label in column 8, followed by a period. A SECTION is a larger unit that contains one or more paragraphs, declared with a section header (name followed by SECTION). Question 6: A batch job ABENDs with an S0C7. What does this mean, and how do you diagnose it?

S0C7 is a data exception -- the most common ABEND in COBOL batch processing. It means the program attempted an arithmetic operation or numeric comparison on a field that contains non-numeric data (spaces, low-values, or corrupted data in a field defined as PIC 9 or COMP-3). Diagnosis steps: (1) Check the job output for the PSW (Program Status Word) and the offset within the load module. (2) Use the offset to find the failing instruction in the compiler listing. The listing maps each COBOL statement to its machine code offset. Question 7: Explain the DISP parameter in JCL and give an example.

DISP specifies a dataset's status and disposition. It has three sub-parameters: status (how the dataset exists when the step starts), normal disposition (what to do with it if the step succeeds), and abnormal disposition (what to do if the step fails). For example, DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE) means: the dataset does not yet exist (NEW), catalog it if the step ends normally (CATLG), and delete it if the step ABENDs (DELETE). Other common status values are OLD (exclusive access to an existing dataset), SHR (shared access), and MOD (append to existing or create new). Common dispositions include KEEP (retain without cataloging), PASS (pass to a subsequent step), and UNCATLG (remove from the catalog but keep the physical dataset).

Question 8: What is pseudo-conversational programming in CICS, and why is it used?

In pseudo-conversational programming, the CICS transaction terminates after each screen interaction (SEND MAP followed by RETURN TRANSID). When the user presses Enter or a function key, CICS starts a new task using the specified transaction ID. The application stores its state in a COMMAREA (or CONTAINER in modern CICS) that is passed between task invocations. This approach is used because CICS resources (tasks, storage, threads) are limited. Pseudo-conversational programming releases all resources between screen interactions, allowing CICS to support far more concurrent users.

Question 9: What is a GDG (Generation Data Group) and when would you use one?

A GDG is a collection of chronologically related datasets that share a base name and are distinguished by a generation number. For example, PROD.DAILY.EXTRACT(0) is the current generation, PROD.DAILY.EXTRACT(-1) is the previous generation, and PROD.DAILY.EXTRACT(+1) is the next generation to be created. GDGs are used for datasets that are created on a recurring schedule -- daily extracts, weekly backups, monthly reports -- where you need to retain a rolling history. The GDG base definition specifies how many generations to retain (the LIMIT). When a new generation exceeds the limit, the oldest generation is automatically deleted (or uncataloged). CALL is a COBOL language verb that invokes a subprogram within the same address space. The calling program and called program share the same run unit. Data is passed through the USING clause (by reference or by content). CALL can be static (resolved at link-edit time) or dynamic (resolved at runtime using the program name as a string).

EXEC CICS LINK invokes a program through the CICS program control facility. The linked program gets its own set of CICS resources and runs as part of the same CICS task.
