The Art of Fielding
Fielding is often the difference between winning and losing. Good fielding saves runs, creates pressure, and takes wickets.
Key Fielding Positions
- Slips: Behind the batsman on the off side, catching edges
- Gully: Backward of point, catching cut shots
- Point: Square of the wicket on the off side
- Cover: Between point and mid-off
- Mid-on/Mid-off: Straight fielders either side of the bowler
- Square Leg: Square of the wicket on the leg side
- Fine Leg: Behind the batsman on the leg side
Catching Techniques
- Keep your eyes on the ball at all times
- Create a cup with your hands for high catches
- Use fingers pointing down for catches below waist height
- Move your hands with the ball to cushion the catch
- Practice makes perfect - take hundreds of catches daily
Ground Fielding
- Get your body behind the ball
- Use the long barrier technique for stopping
- Pick up and throw in one smooth motion
- Aim for the top of the stumps
- Back up your teammates' throws
