The Art of Fielding

Fielding is often the difference between winning and losing. Good fielding saves runs, creates pressure, and takes wickets.

Key Fielding Positions

  • Slips: Behind the batsman on the off side, catching edges
  • Gully: Backward of point, catching cut shots
  • Point: Square of the wicket on the off side
  • Cover: Between point and mid-off
  • Mid-on/Mid-off: Straight fielders either side of the bowler
  • Square Leg: Square of the wicket on the leg side
  • Fine Leg: Behind the batsman on the leg side

Catching Techniques

  • Keep your eyes on the ball at all times
  • Create a cup with your hands for high catches
  • Use fingers pointing down for catches below waist height
  • Move your hands with the ball to cushion the catch
  • Practice makes perfect - take hundreds of catches daily

Ground Fielding

  • Get your body behind the ball
  • Use the long barrier technique for stopping
  • Pick up and throw in one smooth motion
  • Aim for the top of the stumps
  • Back up your teammates' throws
