Rubric: Participation and Lab Engagement

For courses that grade participation, especially in a lab-based or flipped format where the book's "compile-and-run" exercises and discussion guides drive class time. A simple 4-level scale per category; average across the term.

Categories

1. Preparation

  • Excellent: consistently arrives having read the assigned index.md and attempted the quiz; brings specific questions.
  • Proficient: usually prepared; general familiarity with the reading.
  • Developing: inconsistently prepared.
  • Beginning: rarely prepared; unfamiliar with the material.

2. Lab / compile-and-run engagement

  • Excellent: actively compiles and runs examples, predicts output before running, investigates discrepancies, and helps peers debug. Treats a mismatch with the book's "expected output" as an interesting problem, not a dead end.
  • Proficient: completes lab exercises reliably.
  • Developing: completes labs with prompting.
  • Beginning: disengaged in lab.

3. Discussion contribution

  • Excellent: contributes substantively to discussions (e.g., the "rewrite vs. modernize" debate, the "where is Fortran the wrong tool?" prompt); listens and builds on others; takes defensible positions.
  • Proficient: participates when invited; sound contributions.
  • Developing: occasional participation.
  • Beginning: does not participate.

4. Collaboration and professionalism

  • Excellent: helps peers generously, shares debugging strategies, gives and receives code review graciously, and models the honest, precise-claim culture the book advocates.
  • Proficient: cooperative and respectful.
  • Developing: works alone; limited collaboration.
  • Beginning: uncooperative or disruptive.

Notes

  • The discussion guides (discussion-guides/chNN-discussion.md) supply ready prompts and group activities; many chapters include a think–pair–share and a small group task that make participation easy to observe.
  • Reward good questions as much as good answers — a student who asks "why isn't my floating-point sum exact?" at the right moment is engaging with the heart of the material.
  • For large classes, sampling a few categories per session (rather than grading every student every day) keeps this tractable while still signaling that engagement matters.
