Key distinction: End-to-end encryption protects content but not metadata. As discussed in Chapter 1, metadata (who communicates with whom, when, how often) can be highly revealing. Signal minimizes metadata collection; WhatsApp encrypts content but collects extensive metadata.

VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and route it through a server in another location, hiding your IP address from websites and your browsing activity from your internet service provider.

Recommended considerations when choosing a VPN: - No-logs policy: Choose providers that have been independently audited to verify they do not log user activity (e.g., Mullvad, Proton VPN, IVPN) - Jurisdiction: The provider's legal jurisdiction determines which government requests for data it must comply with - Open-source: Providers that publish their source code allow independent security review - Payment methods: Providers that accept anonymous payment (cash, cryptocurrency) offer stronger anonymity

Important caveats: A VPN does not make you anonymous -- it shifts trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. If the VPN provider logs your activity, a VPN provides no privacy benefit. Free VPNs frequently monetize user data and should be avoided. A VPN does not protect against fingerprinting, cookies, or account-based tracking.

E.5 A Note on Tool Selection

Choosing privacy tools involves trade-offs. The most private tool is not always the most usable, and the most secure tool may be the hardest to maintain. When selecting tools:

  1. Assess your threat model. What are you protecting, and from whom? A journalist protecting sources has different needs than a student limiting ad tracking. The tools appropriate for each situation differ.

  2. Prioritize the tools with the highest impact. A privacy-focused browser with a tracker blocker and an encrypted messaging app cover the majority of daily privacy exposure.

  3. Understand the limits. No tool provides absolute privacy. VPNs shift trust; encrypted messaging protects content but not metadata; private browsing does not prevent fingerprinting. Tools reduce risk; they do not eliminate it.

  4. Evaluate trust. Who built the tool? Is it open-source? Has it been independently audited? Is the organization's business model compatible with privacy (or does it depend on selling data)?

  5. Keep tools updated. Security vulnerabilities are discovered continuously. Using outdated software undermines the protection the tool is designed to provide.
