🆘 WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW

If your engine is overheating (temperature gauge in the red, steam): pull over, turn the engine off, and do not open the radiator cap — pressurized coolant can cause serious burns. Wait 30+ minutes. Call for a tow.
If you're in an accident: safety first, then 911, then photograph everything before anything moves. Do not say "I'm sorry" — it can be treated as an admission of fault. See "If You're in an Accident."
If you're being pulled over: signal, pull fully off the road, turn off the engine, turn on the interior light if it's dark, keep your hands visible on the wheel, and don't reach for anything until asked. Argue in court, never on the roadside. See "If You're Pulled Over."
If you're stranded: stay with the vehicle if it's safe — it's easier to find and it's shelter. Hazards on. If you're on a highway shoulder and traffic is fast, get out on the passenger side and stand well away from the road, behind a barrier if there is one.
If a shop just quoted you a number you can't pay and you need the car for work: don't authorize anything today. Ask for the written estimate, ask which items are safety-critical and which can wait, and take it somewhere else for a second opinion. See "When you can't pay for the repair."
Why maintenance is cheaper than repair
Most catastrophic car failures are preventable, and the preventive version is dramatically cheaper than the failure.

Your owner's manual has the actual maintenance schedule for your specific car. Not the dealer's "recommended service menu," which is a sales document with additional items on it. If you don't have the manual, it's free as a PDF from the manufacturer's site.
Why deferral compounds
The table above isn't a moral point about diligence. It's a description of how mechanical failure actually works, and understanding the mechanism is what lets you make the right call on a problem this chapter doesn't specifically list.
Almost every expensive car failure follows the same shape: a cheap consumable wears out, and because it wore out, it destroys something expensive next to it.
- Brake pads are a $40 consumable designed to be sacrificed. Run them to the backing plate and the steel bites the rotor, and now it's $400. Keep going and the caliper overheats and seizes.
- Engine oil is a $30 consumable. Its job is to carry heat away and keep metal from touching metal. Let it break down and the bearings score the crankshaft, and the engine is worth less than the tow.
- Coolant carries corrosion inhibitors. When those are used up, it quietly eats the radiator, water pump, and heater core from the inside.
- A timing belt is a rubber part with a published expiration date. On an interference engine, its failure bends every valve in the head.
The pattern: you are always paying. You are only choosing whether to pay $40 on a schedule you control or $1,200 on a Tuesday you don't.
That reframing matters most when you're broke, because being broke is exactly when deferral looks rational and is most expensive. It's also why a car budget isn't the payment — it's the payment plus the maintenance. Budget $75–125 a month for maintenance on an older car, into a separate account you don't touch (Chapter 2 covers sinking funds). Most months you spend nothing. The month the alternator goes, it's an inconvenience instead of a crisis.
The stop line: what you never do yourself
This chapter will teach you to do a fair amount of your own work, because it saves real money and because knowing how the car works is the best defense against being sold something you don't need. But some of this kills people, and it kills competent people, so the line goes here and it does not move for anybody's budget.
Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Not for a second, not "just to look," not because you'll be quick. The jack that comes with your car is a lifting device, not a holding device — it is designed to raise a wheel long enough to swap it, and it fails by tipping, sinking, or slipping off a bent pinch weld. Use jack stands, rated for the weight, on the manufacturer's designated lift points, on level concrete. Chock the wheels still on the ground. Then, before any part of you goes under, shove the car hard at the fender. If it rocks off the stands, better now.
Never jack a car on a slope, on gravel, on grass, on dirt, or on asphalt in summer heat. A jack sinks into soft ground and into hot asphalt, and it sinks unevenly, which is how a car comes off it. If you're on the shoulder and the ground is soft, that's a tow, not a tire change.
Also on the far side of the line:
- Brake hydraulics. Replacing pads on a familiar car with the right tools is within reach for a patient person; opening the hydraulic system — lines, calipers, master cylinder, bleeding — is not a place to learn. A brake failure gives you no second attempt.
- Steering and suspension. Tie rods, ball joints, control arms, and anything spring-loaded. A compressed coil spring stores enough energy to kill you if the compressor slips, and cheap spring compressors slip.
- Airbags and the SRS system. Airbags are explosive devices with a stored charge that survives the battery being disconnected. People are injured by airbags that deploy on a workbench.
- Fuel system. Fuel injection runs at high pressure. A line opened without depressurizing sprays atomized gasoline across a hot engine bay.
- Anything requiring the car to be running while you're underneath it, and anything involving the AC system, which is sealed, pressurized, and legally regulated.
No amount of money you're saving is worth crossing that line. If the repair is on that list and you're broke, the answer is not "carefully, myself, from a video." The answer is the triage framework and the 💸 box later in this chapter — community college shops, nonprofit garages, used parts, payment plans. Those exist. The safe DIY version of a ball joint does not.
Everything else in this chapter is on the safe side of the line: fluids, filters, wipers, bulbs, tires with the wheel on the ground, battery terminals, and reading your own codes. That's a genuinely useful amount of car.
The maintenance schedule
Intervals vary by vehicle. Follow your manual. These are typical, and each item is listed with what it actually prevents — because "recommended service" means nothing and "this is what stops the head gasket from going" means something.
Every month (5 minutes)
- Tire pressure — including the spare
- Walk around — lights, obvious damage, fluid under the car
- Windshield washer fluid
Every 3–7,500 miles
- Oil and filter. The old "every 3,000 miles" rule is obsolete for modern engines and synthetic oil; most cars now specify 5,000–10,000 miles. Follow the manual, not the quick-lube sticker.
- Tire rotation — usually done with the oil change. Extends tire life significantly.
- Check all fluids
Every 15,000–30,000 miles
- Engine air filter (easy DIY — usually a clip-open box under the hood, $15–25 part)
- Cabin air filter (easy DIY — usually behind the glovebox, $15–25). If your AC smells or airflow is weak, this is usually why, and dealers charge $80–120 for a ten-minute job.
- Brake inspection
- Wiper blades — twice a year, or when they streak
Every 30,000–60,000 miles
- Brake fluid — it absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade
- Transmission fluid (check your manual — some are "lifetime," which usually means "life of the warranty")
- Coolant flush
- Spark plugs (modern iridium plugs often last 100,000 miles)
Every 60,000–100,000 miles
- Timing belt, if your engine has one rather than a chain. This is the most important scheduled service there is on an interference engine — if the belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and the engine is destroyed. Look up whether your engine has a belt or a chain and whether it's an interference design. This single piece of knowledge has saved a lot of engines.
- Serpentine belt
- Water pump (often done with the timing belt, since the labor overlaps)
- Suspension inspection
Annually
- Battery test — free at most auto parts stores. Batteries typically last 3–5 years, less in extreme heat.
- Alignment check if the car pulls or tires wear unevenly
- State inspection and registration, where required
What each of those actually prevents

"Severe service" and what it actually means
Most manuals publish two schedules, normal and severe. Severe is genuinely shorter — sometimes half the interval — and shops apply it to everyone.
As manufacturers actually define it, severe service usually means: consistently short trips under about five miles (the engine never fully warms, so moisture and fuel dilute the oil), heavy idling or stop-and-go, towing, sustained extreme heat or cold, or dust and gravel.
Read those honestly. A lot of city drivers genuinely are severe-service and don't know it — if your commute is four miles of stoplights, you are the severe schedule, and the shorter oil interval is real advice, not an upsell. A person doing 40 highway miles a day is not, no matter what the sticker says.
⚠️ THE TRAP: The sticker in your windshield
That little adhesive reminder is not a maintenance schedule. It's a marketing calendar printed by whoever changed your oil last, and it is set to whatever interval brings you back soonest — commonly 3,000 miles or three months, on a car the manufacturer built for 7,500 or 10,000.
Who profits: the shop, obviously. But also, in most quick-lube arrangements, the specific person who wrote the sticker. Quick-lube technicians are frequently compensated on ticket average or on the number of add-ons sold per car. The person telling you your transmission fluid looks dark is often paid more when you agree.
What it costs you: at 3,000-mile intervals on a car specified for 7,500, you buy roughly two and a half times as many oil changes for the life of the car. On a car you keep to 150,000 miles, that's about thirty extra oil changes — call it $1,800–2,500 (2025 prices) for no mechanical benefit, plus the waste.
What to do instead: open your manual once, write the real interval and the real oil spec on an index card in the glovebox, and drive to it. Many cars built since roughly 2010 have an oil life monitor in the dash that calculates the interval from actual engine conditions — that's a better authority than the sticker and, on most makes, a better one than a fixed mileage number.
The polite exit line, which works every time: "I'm following the manufacturer's schedule. Is that service in it?"
The five-minute check
Do this monthly. It takes five minutes and it prevents most roadside failures.
Tires
Pressure. The correct pressure is on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, not on the tire sidewall (that's the maximum, not the recommendation). Check when cold — before driving, or at least three hours after.
This is the most common piece of car misinformation there is. The number molded into the sidewall — "MAX PRESS 51 PSI" or similar — is the most pressure the tire structure can safely hold. It is not a recommendation, and inflating to it makes the car ride badly, wear the tread's center out early, and lose grip. The door jamb placard is the number the manufacturer arrived at for your car's weight and suspension. If it's missing, the same figure is in the owner's manual; typical passenger cars land around 32–36 PSI (2025-era vehicles).
Under-inflation causes: worse fuel economy, faster wear on the edges, worse handling, and blowouts — under-inflation is a leading cause of tire failure at highway speed. The mechanism is heat: an under-inflated tire flexes more in the sidewall on every rotation, flexing generates heat, and heat separates the rubber from the belts. That's why blowouts happen on hot days at highway speed rather than in a parking lot.
Pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F the temperature falls. This is why every TPMS light in the region comes on the first cold morning in November. Re-check at the change of seasons rather than assuming something broke.
A $12 digital gauge is more accurate than the ones on gas station air pumps, which are abused daily and calibrated never.
Reading the sidewall
Everything you need to buy the right replacement tire is molded into the one you have. It looks like nonsense until someone shows you once.

① Type. "P" = passenger. "LT" = light truck (stiffer, higher pressure). No letter = Euro-metric. Don't mix types across an axle.
② Section width, 215 millimeters. ③ Aspect ratio, 65 — the sidewall height is 65% of the width. A lower number means a shorter, stiffer sidewall: sharper handling, harsher ride, more vulnerable to potholes.
④ Construction. "R" = radial. Effectively everything on the road is radial.
⑤ Wheel diameter in inches, 16. This one is not negotiable — it has to match your wheel.
⑥ Load index, 98 — a coded maximum weight per tire. Never go below the load index on your door placard. This is the spec that cheap tire shops quietly downgrade.
⑦ Speed rating. A letter, roughly S < T < H < V < W. Going below your car's original rating is legal in most places and is a real reduction in the tire's heat tolerance at speed.
⑧ The DOT date code — the four digits that tell you the tire's age. "3419" = the 34th week of 2019. Rubber degrades whether or not you drive on it, so a "brand new" tire that sat in a warehouse for six years is not new. Check this before you buy, especially on a deal that seems too good.
⑨ Maximum pressure. Not your pressure. See above.
⑩ Treadwear, a relative durability grade — 500 should last roughly twice as long as 250, but it's only comparable within one manufacturer. ⑪ Traction (AA, A, B, C) is wet braking grip; ⑫ Temperature (A, B, C) is heat resistance. Avoid C on either.
Buying tires: replace in pairs at minimum, and put the new pair on the rear axle regardless of which wheels drive the car. It's counterintuitive and it's what every tire manufacturer says: a rear end that loses grip before the front spins the car, and most drivers can't recover that. All four at once is better, and on AWD it's often required, since mismatched circumferences can damage the differential. Price it at three places — including a warehouse club and an online seller shipping to a local installer — and ask what the out-the-door price includes: mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal, road hazard.
Tread depth — the penny test. Insert a penny into the tread groove, Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is at or below 2/32" and the tire is legally worn out. Better: use a quarter — if you can see the top of Washington's head, you're at 4/32" and should be shopping.
Check in multiple spots and across the width. Uneven wear tells you something: - Both edges worn → under-inflation - Center worn → over-inflation - One edge worn → alignment problem - Cupping or scalloping → suspension problem
Also look for: cracks in the sidewall, bulges (a bulge means internal damage — replace immediately, it will blow), embedded objects, and the DOT date code. Tires older than 6–10 years should be replaced regardless of tread, because rubber degrades. The date is the last four digits of the DOT code: "3419" means the 34th week of 2019.
Fluids
Six fluids matter. Two of them you can top up yourself without a second thought, two you can top up carefully, and two are messages rather than tasks — if the level is low, something is wrong and adding more doesn't fix it.
Engine oil — check monthly, top up freely. Engine off and cool, on level ground. Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert fully, pull again. Level should be between the two marks. The gap between low and full is typically about one quart, so if you're at the bottom mark, add half a quart, wait a minute, and re-check. Do not overfill — too much oil gets whipped into foam by the crankshaft, and foam doesn't lubricate.
Color and texture are diagnostic. Amber to light brown is fresh. Dark brown to black is normal for oil with miles on it and isn't an emergency by itself. Gritty between your fingers means overdue. Milky, foamy, or the color of a coffee milkshake means coolant is getting into the oil — stop driving and get it looked at, because that's usually a head gasket and continuing will finish the engine.
Also worth knowing: an engine that uses a quart every 1,000–2,000 miles is common on higher-mileage cars and is not automatically a repair. It's a reason to check monthly and keep a quart in the trunk. An engine that suddenly starts using oil, or that leaves puddles, is a different conversation.
Coolant — check monthly, top up carefully. Check the overflow reservoir, not the radiator. Level between MIN and MAX when cold. Never open a hot radiator cap. If you must add, use the coolant type your manual specifies — the colors (green, orange, pink, blue, yellow) indicate different chemistries and mixing incompatible ones can turn the coolant into gel. In an emergency, plain water gets you to a shop; it just needs to be flushed and replaced properly afterward, and it will freeze in winter.
A coolant reservoir that keeps going down is a leak, and coolant leaks are one of the few things that get much more expensive if ignored. Look for a sweet smell, white residue crusted on hoses, or a puddle that's green/orange and slippery.
Windshield washer fluid — top up freely, and don't use water. Plain water grows algae in the tank, freezes in the lines in winter, and doesn't cut road film. A gallon is $4. Use winter-rated fluid before it's winter, because you cannot get frozen washer lines to thaw at the moment a salt truck coats your windshield.
Brake fluid — look, don't top up casually. Reservoir near the firewall on the driver's side, usually translucent with MIN and MAX molded in so you can read the level without opening anything. Leave the cap on — brake fluid absorbs water from open air, which is the exact problem you're trying to avoid.
A slowly falling level is usually normal: as brake pads wear thin, the caliper pistons extend and hold more fluid. A fast drop, or a low level plus a soft pedal, is a leak and it is not a "keep an eye on it" situation. Fresh brake fluid is nearly clear or light amber; dark, coffee-colored fluid is saturated with moisture and due for a flush.
Transmission fluid — check if you can, don't guess. Some cars have a dipstick, many built after roughly 2010 don't and require a shop with a lift to check the level correctly. If yours has one, check it warm and running, per the manual, because the level moves with temperature. Healthy automatic fluid is red or pink and smells faintly sweet. Brown fluid that smells burnt is a real warning and worth a conversation before it becomes a rebuild.
Power steering — only if your car has hydraulic steering. Many newer cars use electric power steering and have no reservoir and no fluid at all. If yours has one and it's low, and especially if the steering whines when you turn, that's a leak to have looked at.
A note on puddles. A drip is not automatically bad — clear water from the middle on a hot day is air conditioner condensation and is supposed to happen. Slide cardboard under overnight and read the color: clear = water (fine), amber/brown = oil, red/pink = transmission or power steering, green/orange and slippery = coolant, clear-to-yellow and oily near a wheel = brake fluid (urgent).
Lights
Have someone walk around while you operate: headlights (low and high), turn signals front and rear, brake lights, reverse lights, hazards, license plate light. Or back up to a reflective surface at night and watch.
A burned-out bulb is a $5 part, a common traffic stop reason, and a genuine safety issue.
Most bulbs are an easy DIY — usually a twist-and-pull socket behind the housing. Look up "[year] [make] [model] headlight bulb replacement" first. Handle halogen bulbs by the base, not the glass; skin oil makes a hot spot that kills the bulb early. Auto parts counter staff will look up the number for you, and buy in pairs — the second one isn't far behind.
A burned-out light is one of the most common reasons for a traffic stop, and it's frequently a "fix-it ticket" — dismissed when you show proof of repair — rather than a fine. Worth knowing when you get one.
Brakes: what the noises mean
Brakes are the system that tells you it's wearing out before it fails, if you know what it's saying. Most people hear something, decide it's probably fine, and find out at $900 instead of $250.
A high, thin squeal that appears when you brake and disappears when you stop. This is almost always the wear indicator — a small metal tab built into the brake pad specifically to contact the rotor and make a noise when the friction material gets thin. It is a designed feature, not a failure. It means: make an appointment in the next few weeks. It does not mean stop the car.
Grinding — a deep, metallic, ugly sound, often with a vibration through the pedal. The friction material is gone and steel is contacting steel. This is the expensive stage. You are now machining grooves into a rotor, and what would have been a $150–300 pad job becomes $400–800 with rotors, and worse if a caliper cooked. Get it done now — and know that stopping distances are genuinely longer at this point.
Squealing constantly, even when you're not braking. Often the same wear indicator dragging, sometimes a stuck caliper, sometimes just a rust film after rain that goes away in the first few stops. If it's still there after a mile of driving, get it looked at.
A rhythmic pulsing or shuddering in the pedal at highway speeds. Warped or unevenly worn rotors. Not an emergency, but it lengthens stopping distance and it doesn't improve. Cheaper to fix while it's just rotors.
The pedal goes lower than it used to, or feels spongy. Air or water in the hydraulic system, or a leak. This is the one that gets urgent fast. A pedal that slowly sinks toward the floor when you hold steady pressure at a stoplight is a failing master cylinder. Get it checked before you drive it again if you can.
The car pulls to one side under braking. A sticking caliper or a hose problem on one side. Also causes that side's pad to wear out first and can overheat a wheel.
A burning smell after a hill, plus a spongy pedal. That's brake fade — the fluid boiling. Get off the brakes and downshift; on a long descent, use a lower gear so the engine does the slowing, and brake firmly and briefly rather than riding the pedal continuously.
One more, unrelated to wear: a loud grinding or clunk from a wheel that changes with speed, not with braking, is usually a wheel bearing, not brakes. Different repair, similar urgency.
Rough timeline for planning: brake pads typically last 30,000–70,000 miles, with city driving at the low end and highway driving well past the high end. Rotors often last two sets of pads if the pads are replaced on time. That "if" is where the money is.
The battery, and why modern cars complicate it
A car battery gives you almost no warning, dies at the worst available moment, and costs $120–250 (2025 prices) to replace. Batteries typically last 3–5 years, and less in sustained heat — Phoenix eats batteries in three years; Minneapolis kills them in January but the damage was done the previous August.
Symptoms of a dying battery: - The engine cranks slowly — "rurr... rurr... rurr" instead of an immediate start - Headlights noticeably dim at idle and brighten when you rev - It starts fine most days and not at all on the first cold morning - The car needs a jump twice within a month - Electrical gremlins — flickering dash, radio resetting, windows moving slowly
Terminal corrosion is the white or bluish crust on the battery posts, and it's genuinely one of the highest-value five-minute fixes in car ownership: a car that won't start because of corroded terminals is diagnosed as a dead battery every day. Disconnect the negative terminal first, then positive. Clean with a wire brush or a paste of baking soda and water. Reconnect positive first, then negative. Wear eye protection; battery residue is acidic.
Get it tested rather than guessing. Most auto parts stores test batteries and alternators for free in about ten minutes, in the parking lot. The test tells you the battery's actual cold-cranking amps against its rating, which is a real number rather than a hunch.
Why modern cars complicate this. On a lot of vehicles built since roughly 2010, the battery isn't just a battery:
- It's often not under the hood. Trunk, under the rear seat, under the floor, in a wheel well. Many of those cars have designated remote jump terminals under the hood specifically so you never touch the actual battery. Find yours before you need it.
- Start-stop systems require a specific battery type — AGM or EFB — and installing a cheaper conventional battery in a start-stop car shortens its life dramatically.
- Many cars require the new battery to be "registered" to the charging system with a scan tool. Skip it and the alternator charges the new battery on the old one's profile, which shortens its life. If a shop quotes you an extra $40 for battery registration on a BMW, Mercedes, VW, or similar, that's usually real, not an upsell.
- Disconnecting the battery resets things — radio codes, window auto-up calibration, throttle learning, the clock. Nothing breaks, but look up your radio code first if your older car has one.
A portable jump pack ($60–100 in 2025) is the single best thing you can put in a trunk. It doesn't need a second car, a stranger, or a well-lit parking lot, and it charges a phone.
Warning lights
The colors are not decoration. Dashboard warning lights follow an international convention, and the color is the instruction: red means the car is telling you to stop, amber means the car is telling you to make an appointment, and green or blue means a system is simply on.

① Oil pressure. This is the most urgent light on the dashboard, and most people don't know that. It does not mean "you're low on oil." It means oil is no longer being pushed through the engine under pressure, and the moving parts inside are now touching each other at thousands of RPM. An engine can be destroyed in under a minute. Pull over the instant it's safe, shut the engine off, and have it towed. If the light flickers only at idle and goes out when you rev, that's still a real problem, just a slower one. Do not confuse this with the amber "low oil level" light some cars have, which means top it up.
② Temperature. The engine is overheating. Turn off the AC, turn the heater to full hot and the fan to high — this genuinely dumps engine heat into the cabin and buys you a mile or two — and get off the road. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; the system holds coolant above its boiling point under pressure, and releasing that sprays scalding liquid. Driving an overheating engine warps the cylinder head, and a warped head plus a blown gasket is a four-figure repair on a car that may not be worth it.
③ Brake. Three unrelated things share this light: the parking brake is engaged (check first, it's usually this), the brake fluid is low, or there's a hydraulic failure. If the pedal also feels soft, long, or sinking, treat it as a failure and stop. Some cars illuminate the red brake light together with ABS when a more serious fault is present.
④ Battery / charging. Almost never the battery itself — it means the alternator isn't charging, and the car is running off stored battery power. You have roughly 20–40 minutes, less at night with headlights on. Turn off everything you can — AC, radio, heated seats, phone charger — and drive directly to a shop or home, not to a parking lot at the far end of town. When it dies, it dies completely, including the power steering assist on some cars.
⑤ Airbag / SRS. The car drives normally and this is easy to live with for months, which is why people do. The consequence is that in a crash the airbags may not fire, and the seatbelt pretensioners may not either. Get it diagnosed. Do not attempt SRS work yourself — see the stop line.
⑥ Check engine, steady. The single most misunderstood light there is. It's the emissions system reporting that something is out of spec, and the range runs from a loose gas cap (a real and common cause — tighten it and drive a few days) to a failing sensor to a genuine engine problem. Steady means find out, not panic. It is also the light that will fail you at a state emissions inspection, so it's on a clock if you live somewhere with one.
⑦ Check engine, flashing. This is a red light wearing amber's clothing. Flashing means an active misfire: one or more cylinders isn't burning its fuel, and that raw fuel is going into the catalytic converter, where it burns at a temperature the converter isn't built for. The converter can be destroyed in a matter of minutes, and converters run $1,500–3,000 on many cars (2025), partly because they contain precious metals. Pull over, shut it off, and have it towed. Getting to work is not worth a catalytic converter.
⑧ TPMS. Low pressure in at least one tire. Check all four with a gauge and inflate to the door jamb number. If it comes on the first cold morning of the year and the tires look fine, that's temperature, not a leak — but check anyway. A TPMS light that flashes for a minute at startup and then stays solid means a sensor fault, not low pressure; the sensors have batteries and they eventually die, usually around 7–10 years.
⑨ ABS. Your normal brakes still work exactly as they always did. What you've lost is anti-lock — in a panic stop the wheels can lock and you'll skid instead of steering. That matters most in rain and snow. Not an emergency; do get it fixed, and until you do, remember that threshold braking (firm pressure just short of lockup) is back to being your job.
⑩ Traction control / stability control. Flashing while you're driving is the system working, which is normal and reassuring on a wet on-ramp. Steady means the system has faulted and is switched off. Note that this light often comes on alongside ABS, because they share wheel-speed sensors — one bad sensor lights both.
⑪ Low fuel. Most cars illuminate it with roughly 30–50 miles of range left, though it varies enormously by model. Two things worth knowing: the arrow next to the fuel pump icon on the gauge points to the side your filler door is on (genuinely useful in a rental), and repeatedly running the tank near empty can shorten the life of the in-tank fuel pump, which is cooled by the fuel around it.
⑫ Service due / maintenance required. Not a fault. It's a mileage counter, and on many cars it's reset by a button sequence you can look up and do yourself in thirty seconds. A shop that tells you the "maintenance required" light means you need work has told you nothing. The oil life monitor on many modern cars is a different and smarter thing — it estimates remaining oil life from actual driving conditions, and it is worth following.
⑬ Green and blue lights are status, not warnings. Blue is high beams — if that one is on in traffic, the people flashing you are being helpful.
Getting the code read: most auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance) will read your check engine code for free, in the parking lot, in five minutes. You can also buy a Bluetooth OBD-II reader for $20–30 and read codes yourself with a phone app; every car sold in the US since 1996 has the same port, usually under the dash on the driver's side. Knowing the code before you go to a shop is genuinely useful — it prevents you from being told a vague and expensive story.
One caution about codes. A code tells you which circuit reported a problem, not what part to buy. "P0420 — catalyst system efficiency below threshold" is frequently caused by a failing oxygen sensor, not a failing catalytic converter, and the internet will confidently tell you to buy the expensive one. Use the code to ask a better question, not to self-prescribe a part.
Finding a mechanic who isn't ripping you off
How to find a good one
- Ask neighbors, coworkers, and local community groups. Personal recommendation beats reviews.
- Look for ASE certification (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) — a genuine credential.
- AAA Approved Auto Repair shops are inspected and offer AAA arbitration on disputes.
- Independent shops are typically 20–40% cheaper than dealers for the same work, and often better on older cars. Dealers are worth it for warranty work, recalls, and complex model-specific problems.
- Specialists for your make can be excellent — a shop that only works on Hondas knows Hondas.
- Try them with something small first — an oil change — before you need something big.
Green flags
- Explains the problem in terms you understand, without condescension
- Shows you the worn part
- Provides a written estimate before starting work
- Distinguishes clearly between "needs it now," "needs it soon," and "watch it"
- Doesn't pressure
- Willing to give you the old parts back
- Warranties their work (12 months/12,000 miles is a common standard)
Red flags
- Won't give a written estimate
- Finds a long list of urgent problems on a routine visit
- Pressure and urgency: "you can't safely drive this out of here"
- Won't show you the problem
- Vague explanations, or explanations that shift
- Recommends services not in your owner's manual ("fuel injection service," "engine flush," "transmission flush" on a car that doesn't call for it — these are common upsells)
- Calls with additional problems after you've dropped the car off, repeatedly
- No itemized invoice
Protecting yourself
1. Get a written estimate before authorizing work. In many states this is a legal requirement, and shops generally cannot exceed it by more than a set percentage without your approval.
2. Authorize specific work only. Say: "Please call me before doing anything beyond what we discussed."
3. Ask to see the old parts. Legitimate shops have no problem with this.
4. Get a second opinion on anything over about $500. Another shop's diagnosis costs $50–100 and can save thousands.
5. Look up the repair. RepairPal and similar sites give estimated ranges by repair, car, and ZIP code.
6. Ask "what happens if I wait?" This separates genuine safety issues from revenue. A good mechanic will answer honestly, and often the answer is "nothing for six months."
7. Keep records. Every service, with date and mileage. This is worth real money at resale and it prevents paying for the same service twice.
⚠️ THE TRAP: The upsell menu
Quick-lube and chain shops frequently run on service upsells. Common ones with limited value for most cars:
- Engine flush — can dislodge deposits that then clog things. Most manufacturers don't recommend it.
- Fuel injection service — rarely needed on a modern car with decent fuel.
- Transmission flush on a high-mileage car that's never had one — can actually cause failure. A drain-and-fill is gentler.
- "Premium" oil upgrades beyond what your manual specifies
- Wiper blade and air filter replacement at 3x the price of doing it yourself in five minutes
- Nitrogen tire fill
- Coolant flush far more often than the manual says
The defense: "Is that in my owner's manual's maintenance schedule?" It's a polite question with a factual answer, and it ends most of these conversations.
When you can't pay for the repair
At some point a shop hands you a number with a comma in it, for a car you need to get to the job that would pay for it. This is one of the most common financial emergencies there is, and it is not a situation you got yourself into by being careless.
The first move is always the same: don't authorize anything today. Take the written estimate and leave. Nothing on that list gets worse in the two days it takes you to think.
Triage the estimate
Estimates arrive as one number. They're almost never one job. Ask the shop to break the list into three categories, in writing — and a good shop will do this without being asked:
Safety-critical — do not defer. Brakes (pads, rotors, hydraulics, a soft pedal), tires below 3/32" or with a bulge or sidewall damage, steering play, a broken or badly worn suspension component, headlights and brake lights, wipers you can't see through, and anything on the red-light list above. These are not budget decisions. A failed brake job doesn't cost you money; it costs you a person.
Real, and on a clock. A coolant leak, a check engine light in a state with emissions testing, a timing belt past its interval, a slow oil leak that's getting faster, a failing wheel bearing. These get worse and more expensive, but you have weeks or a few months to plan.
Deferrable. Cosmetic damage. A minor, stable oil seep you can monitor with a cardboard square and a quart in the trunk. A cracked-but-intact serpentine belt on a car you can get towed from. A cabin filter. A "recommended" flush that isn't in your manual. Deferrable does not mean fake — it means you can decide when.
Then ask the question that does the most work: "If I only do one thing today, which one, and what happens if I wait on the rest?" An honest mechanic will answer that clearly. A dishonest one will tell you everything is urgent, which is itself the answer.
💸 WHEN YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE RIGHT OPTION
You need the car for work. The estimate is $1,400. You have $200. Here is the actual list, roughly in order of how much money it saves.
1. Get a second opinion, even now — especially now. A diagnostic at another shop runs $50–150 and routinely changes the number by hundreds. Take your written estimate and say: "Another shop quoted this. I'd like your own diagnosis and estimate — please don't look at their list until you've looked at the car." Big-ticket estimates are where diagnostic guesses live, and the second guess is often much cheaper.
2. Community college automotive programs. This is the option almost nobody knows about. Many community colleges with an automotive technology program run a student shop that services the public at or near the cost of parts, because the labor is coursework — supervised by a certified instructor who signs off on every job. Waits are longer and they can't take every job. Search "[your community college] automotive technology customer vehicle" or just call the program and ask. The savings on a labor-heavy repair are frequently 60–80%.
3. Nonprofit and mission-based garages. Many cities have a nonprofit repair shop serving low-income drivers, often attached to a workforce program, a church network, or a car-ownership charity. Vocational high schools sometimes do the same. Call 211, free and nationwide, and ask specifically for car repair assistance — they hold the local list, and these funds routinely go unspent because nobody asks.
4. Ask for used, remanufactured, or aftermarket parts. Shops default to new OEM because it's simplest and the margin is better. A used alternator from a salvage yard, a remanufactured starter, or a quality aftermarket part can cut a bill by half. Say: "Can you price this with a remanufactured or salvage part, and what warranty comes with that?" Some parts should stay new — brake hydraulics, safety components, anything where failure is dangerous — and a good mechanic will tell you which.
5. Ask about payment options plainly. Some independents will let a regular customer pay in installments. Many shops carry a repair-financing card; read the terms, because most are deferred-interest promotions that charge you all the back interest if you're a day late (Chapter 4). A credit union personal loan at 10–14% is almost always cheaper than a 27% store card, and much cheaper than any payday or title loan.
6. Never a title loan. A car title loan takes the car — the thing you need to earn — as collateral, at rates that commonly work out to triple digits annually. It is specifically designed for the situation you are in right now. Chapter 5 covers what to do instead.
7. Split the job across paychecks. Brakes this month, the coolant leak next month. Tell the shop that's the plan and ask them to sequence it by risk. Most will.
The honest part: sometimes you genuinely can't, and that isn't a failure of planning. If the car is unsafe and unfixable this month, the least-bad path is a temporary one — a coworker's carpool, transit, a borrowed car, telling your employer before it becomes an attendance problem rather than after. That conversation goes far better than missing three shifts does.
And the thing worth hearing: a $400 repair on a car you own outright almost always beats trading it for a $400-a-month payment on a car you don't. Fourteen hundred dollars is three and a half months of a car payment, and at the end of the repair you still own the car and owe nobody. A running paid-off car is a very good asset having a bad week. The math only flips when the repairs become continuous — roughly, when you're spending more per year than the car is worth, or when the same system fails repeatedly, or when the next repair is a transmission or an engine on a car worth less than the job.
Roadside emergencies
Flat tire
If it blows at speed: grip the wheel firmly, do not slam the brakes, ease off the accelerator, keep going straight, and coast to a safe stop off the road.
Changing it: 1. Safe, level, hard ground, well off the road. Hazards on. Parking brake on. 2. Get everyone out and away from traffic, behind a barrier if possible. 3. Loosen the lug nuts while the wheel is still on the ground — a quarter turn each. You cannot do this once the wheel is in the air; it will just spin. 4. Jack at the manufacturer's designated jack point (in the manual — the wrong spot bends the body). 5. Raise until the tire clears the ground. 6. Remove lug nuts, remove wheel, mount spare. 7. Hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern (opposite corners, not around the circle). 8. Lower, then torque them fully in the same star pattern. 9. Check the spare's pressure — compact spares typically need 60 PSI, much higher than regular tires, and a spare that's been sitting for five years is usually flat. 10. A compact spare is limited to about 50 mph and 70 miles. Get the real tire fixed.
The safety rule that goes with all of this: changing a wheel is the one job where the car goes up and you don't go under it. No part of you goes beneath a car held up by a jack, ever — reach in from the side, keep your body outside the vehicle's footprint, and if the ground is soft, sloped, gravel, or hot asphalt, stop and call for a tow instead. A jack sinking an inch on one side is how a car comes down. Slide the removed wheel flat under the sill as a backup while you work; it costs nothing and it's what a shop does.
Many cars now have no spare — just a sealant kit and compressor, or run-flat tires. Know which you have before you need it. A sealant kit will handle a nail in the tread and will do nothing for a sidewall cut or a blowout, and using it means telling the tire shop, because sealant makes their job messier and some shops charge for it.
Positioning and visibility matter more than the repair. Get as far off the road as you can, even if it means driving a short distance on a flat and ruining the wheel — a $200 wheel is cheaper than being hit. Hazards on immediately, wheels turned away from the road, reflective triangles well back on the approach side. Get out on the side away from traffic, and put everyone behind a guardrail or up the embankment — not in the car, not standing beside it. Most states have a "Move Over" law requiring traffic to change lanes for a stopped vehicle with hazards on. Most drivers won't.
If you can't change it: roadside assistance, AAA, your insurance (many policies include it), your credit card, or the manufacturer's included service on newer cars. Check what you already have — a lot of people pay for AAA while having identical coverage through their insurer.
Dead battery
Jump starting, in order: 1. Both cars off, in park, not touching each other. 2. RED clamp to the dead battery's positive (+) terminal. 3. RED clamp to the good battery's positive (+). 4. BLACK clamp to the good battery's negative (−). 5. BLACK clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car's engine block — not the dead battery's negative terminal. This is the step people get wrong. Connecting to the battery terminal can ignite hydrogen gas venting from the battery. 6. Start the good car, let it run a few minutes. 7. Start the dead car. 8. Remove in exact reverse order. 9. Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to recharge, or the battery will be dead again.
Safety: don't jump a battery that's cracked, leaking, or frozen. Don't smoke. Eye protection is a good idea.

If it dies again: the battery is failing, or the alternator isn't charging. Get both tested — free at auto parts stores.
Overheating
- Turn off the AC. Turn the heat on full blast — this pulls heat out of the engine and is genuinely effective, if miserable.
- Pull over as soon as it's safe. Shut the engine off.
- Do not open the hood immediately if there's steam, and never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurized above boiling; opening it sprays scalding coolant.
- Wait 30+ minutes.
- Check the coolant reservoir level once cool. Adding coolant or water can get you to a shop.
- Driving an overheating engine destroys it. Warped heads and blown head gaskets cost thousands. Tow it.
Other situations
Brakes feel soft or go to the floor: pump the pedal. Downshift. Use the parking brake gradually — not all at once, which can lock the rear wheels. Aim for something soft if you must.
Stuck accelerator: shift to neutral (this works and it's the answer), brake, steer to safety, then turn off the engine — after you've stopped or slowed, since turning it off may lock the steering on older cars and will disable power assist.
Hydroplaning: ease off the accelerator, don't brake, hold the wheel steady until you feel traction return.
Skid: ease off the gas, look and steer where you want to go (your hands follow your eyes), don't overcorrect.
Running out of gas: get fully off the road, hazards on, and don't walk on a highway shoulder if you can avoid it.
If you're in an accident
In order:
- Check for injuries. Yours and everyone else's.
- Get to safety. If the vehicles are drivable and the accident is minor, move to the shoulder. If not, stay in the car with seatbelts on if you're in traffic — being on foot on a highway is more dangerous than staying inside.
- Call 911. Even for a minor accident, a police report is valuable for insurance. Some jurisdictions won't respond to minor no-injury accidents; document more thoroughly if so.
- Do not say "I'm sorry" or "it was my fault." Reflexive politeness can be treated as an admission. State facts only.
- Photograph everything, before anything moves if it's safe: - All vehicles, all angles, wide and close - Damage on every vehicle - License plates - The overall scene, including position, skid marks, debris, road conditions - Traffic signs and signals - The other driver's license, insurance card, and registration - Any visible injuries
- Exchange: name, phone, address, insurance company and policy number, driver's license number, plate number, and the vehicle make/model.
- Get witness names and phone numbers. Witnesses disappear and their statements matter.
- Note: date, time, location, weather, road conditions, and what happened while it's fresh.
- Call your insurer from the scene or as soon as you're safe. Most have an app that guides you.
- Get checked medically even if you feel fine. Soft tissue injuries frequently don't present for 24–48 hours, and a gap between the accident and treatment is used to dispute claims.
- Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer. You're not obligated to and it will be used to find inconsistencies. Refer them to your own insurer.
- Don't accept a quick settlement before you know the extent of injuries and damage.
If the other driver has no insurance: this is what uninsured motorist coverage is for (Chapter 8). File with your own insurer.
If it's a hit and run: get whatever you can — partial plate, make, color, direction — and call police immediately. Your uninsured motorist coverage typically applies.
If you're pulled over
The immediate priorities are safety and de-escalation. The roadside is not where a ticket gets resolved.
- Signal and pull fully off the road, as far right as you safely can, in a well-lit area if it's dark. If you need to travel a short distance to somewhere safer, signal and go slowly so it's clear you're complying.
- Turn off the engine. Roll down your window. Turn on the interior light if it's dark.
- Keep your hands on the steering wheel where they're visible.
- Don't reach for anything — not your wallet, not the glovebox — until asked, and then say what you're doing: "My registration is in the glovebox, I'm going to reach for it now."
- Be polite. "Yes sir/ma'am/officer." Whatever you think of the stop, courtesy costs nothing and changes outcomes.
- Provide license, registration, and proof of insurance when asked.
- You are not required to answer investigative questions. "Do you know why I pulled you over?" is a question inviting an admission. "No, officer" is a complete answer.
- You can decline a search. "Officer, I don't consent to a search." Say it calmly, once, and do not physically resist if they search anyway. Consent given verbally is very hard to challenge later; a search conducted without consent can be challenged in court.
- If asked to step out, do so. Police can lawfully order you out of the vehicle during a stop.
- Sign the ticket if given one. Signing is not admitting guilt; it's acknowledging receipt. Refusing can escalate to arrest.
- Argue in court, not on the roadside. The officer cannot dismiss the ticket and arguing only creates risk.
Passengers in most states may be required to identify themselves in some circumstances and not in others; the rules vary.
If you're carrying a firearm legally, know your state's duty-to-inform law and follow it precisely.
If you believe your rights were violated: comply at the scene, then document everything immediately afterward — badge number, patrol car number, time, location, what was said — and file a complaint or consult an attorney.
Being pulled over is a situation where the risks are not distributed equally. That is a real and documented fact. The advice above is written to minimize risk in the moment, which is not the same as saying the underlying disparity is acceptable.
Tickets and violations
Don't just pay it. Paying is pleading guilty, which means points on your license and an insurance increase that typically costs far more than the ticket over three years.
Options: - Traffic school / defensive driving — many jurisdictions dismiss the ticket or withhold points on completion. Often available for a small fee once every 12–18 months. This is usually the best option if offered. - Contest it. Show up. A meaningful share of tickets are dismissed because the officer doesn't appear. Even when they do, prosecutors and judges often reduce charges to a non-moving violation. - Ask for a reduction. Many courts will reduce a moving violation to a non-moving one (which carries no points) for a first offense, sometimes just by asking the prosecutor before the hearing. - A traffic attorney for serious violations — often a few hundred dollars, frequently worth it for anything affecting your license or a CDL.
Parking tickets: pay or contest promptly. They compound with late fees and can lead to a boot or tow, and unpaid tickets can block registration renewal.
Points and insurance: a single moving violation commonly raises insurance 20–40% for three years. On a $1,500 annual premium, that's $900–1,800. The ticket is almost never the expensive part.
Registration, inspection, and what happens when they lapse
Three separate obligations get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive.
Registration is your state saying this car is yours and taxed. It renews annually or biennially, by mail or online, and the notice goes to the address the DMV has — which is why you update your address with the DMV when you move, separately from the post office. A forwarded notice that never arrives is the most common way registration lapses.
Inspection is a separate thing, required in some states and not others: a safety inspection, an emissions test, or both. A lit check engine light will fail an emissions test in most testing states, and clearing the code right before the test also fails, because the car reports that its self-tests haven't completed yet ("not ready"). You need to drive it a while after a repair.
Insurance is the third, and most states report it electronically to the DMV. Letting insurance lapse can suspend your registration automatically, sometimes with a per-day reinstatement fee (Chapter 8).
What lapsing actually costs. Expired tags are among the easiest things for an officer to see, so it's a stop that finds other things. Fines are modest, late fees compound, and in many places you cannot renew registration with unpaid tickets or tolls — which is how a $40 ticket becomes a $400 problem and eventually a towed car.
If you're behind: call or check your state DMV's site — most have an online account showing exactly what's owed, and many run periodic amnesty programs that waive accumulated late fees. Start with the DMV site for your state (search "[state] DMV registration renewal"), not a third-party site charging a service fee to do the same thing.
Driving skills nobody teaches after the road test
The test measures whether you can operate the car. It does not teach the handful of things that actually prevent crashes.
Following distance is the whole game. Pick a fixed object, count "one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand" from when the car ahead passes it. Three seconds dry, four to five in rain, eight to ten on snow or ice. Nearly every rear-end collision is a following-distance decision made ten seconds earlier.
Set your mirrors so you have no blind spot. Lean your head against the driver's window and set the left mirror so you barely see your own car; lean to the center and do the same on the right. It feels wrong for a week. Then a car leaving your rear-view mirror appears in the side mirror before it leaves the side mirror and enters your peripheral vision — continuous coverage, no gap. Still shoulder-check; now you're checking rather than discovering.
Merging onto a highway means matching speed, not being polite. Use the whole ramp, get to traffic speed, pick your gap, signal, and go. Slowing or stopping at the end of an on-ramp is one of the more dangerous things you can do, because you're joining 65 mph traffic from 25.
Look where you want to go. In a skid, in a swerve, in a corner — your hands follow your eyes without asking permission. This is why drivers hit the one tree in an empty field; they stared at it. In an emergency, look at the gap, not the obstacle. And when you do correct a skid, unwind the correction as grip returns — the second skid, from over-correcting, is usually the worse one.
Night driving cuts what you can see to roughly the range of your headlights, so drive slow enough to stop within them. Look at the white line on the right when someone's high beams blind you, rather than at the oncoming lights. Clean the inside of the windshield — film scatters light and it's most of why night glare feels worse with age.
Fatigue is impairment, and the reliable signs are missing an exit, drifting, and not remembering the last few miles. Coffee buys about twenty minutes. A twenty-minute nap in a lit parking lot is the actual fix, and it's free.
🎓 GOING DEEPER: Winter, and driving in bad conditions
Winter preparation: check the battery (cold kills weak batteries), switch to winter-rated washer fluid, check tire tread (winter tires are genuinely better than all-seasons below about 45°F — not just for snow, but because the rubber compound stays flexible), and keep the gas tank above half (prevents fuel line freezing and gives you heat if stranded).
A winter kit in the trunk: blanket, hat and gloves, ice scraper and snow brush, small shovel, sand or cat litter for traction, jumper cables or a jump pack, flashlight, water, non-perishable food, phone charger, and a first aid kit.
Driving on snow and ice: - Slow down and increase following distance to 8–10 seconds. - Everything gently — accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly. Abrupt inputs break traction. - Brake in a straight line before turning, not during. - If you have ABS, press the brake firmly and hold. The pedal will pulse and grind. Do not pump it — that defeats the system. If you don't have ABS, threshold-brake or pump. - Bridges and overpasses freeze first. - Black ice looks like wet pavement. If the road looks wet but it's below freezing, assume ice. - 4WD/AWD helps you accelerate. It does not help you stop or turn. This misunderstanding puts a lot of SUVs in ditches.
If stranded in snow: stay with the car, run the engine only about 10 minutes an hour for heat, and make absolutely sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow — a blocked exhaust fills the cabin with carbon monoxide. Crack a window slightly. Make the car visible.
Rain: the first 10–20 minutes of rain are the most dangerous, when oil lifts off the road. Slow down, increase distance, and use headlights (required in many states whenever wipers are on).
Fog: low beams, not high (high beams reflect back). Use fog lights if equipped. Slow dramatically. Never stop in a travel lane.
🌍 OUTSIDE THE US
Roadworthiness inspections are mandatory and rigorous in much of the world — MOT (UK), TÜV (Germany), contrôle technique (France), WOF (New Zealand). They're an expense and they catch problems early, and their public records make used-car buying safer.
Winter tires are legally mandatory in season in many European countries, not merely recommended.
Driving on the left in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, India, South Africa, and others. If you're renting, the hardest parts are roundabouts and judging the left edge of the car.
International Driving Permit — required or strongly recommended in many countries. Available from AAA in the US for about $20 and it must be obtained before you travel.
Canada has no federal inspection requirement, but several provinces require a safety inspection when a used vehicle changes hands or is imported from another province, and Ontario and Quebec have their own winter-tire rules and incentives.
In case of accident abroad: procedures vary; many European countries use a standard "European Accident Statement" form. Rental car insurance and your credit card's coverage often exclude certain countries — check before you drive.
In much of the world the running costs are the shock, not the car. Fuel is frequently two to three times US prices, annual road tax scales with engine size or emissions, and city congestion or low-emission-zone charges (London's ULEZ, many EU cities) apply daily to older vehicles. Price those before you buy anything abroad.

- Ignoring warning lights, especially a flashing check engine light.
- Driving an overheating engine "just a little farther."
- Opening a hot radiator cap.
- Never checking tire pressure.
- Not knowing whether your engine has a timing belt.
- Following the quick-lube sticker instead of the owner's manual.
- Authorizing work without a written estimate.
- Not getting a second opinion on expensive repairs.
- Buying the upsell menu.
- Connecting jumper cables to the dead battery's negative terminal.
- Not checking the spare tire until you need it.
- Just paying a ticket instead of contesting or taking traffic school.
- Saying "I'm sorry" at an accident scene.
- Giving a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer.
- Assuming AWD helps you stop.
- Getting under a car held up only by a jack.
- Inflating tires to the number on the sidewall instead of the door jamb.
- Ignoring a grinding brake because the squeal "went away." It didn't; it graduated.
- Authorizing a big repair the same day you got the estimate.
- Letting registration lapse because the renewal notice went to an old address.

- Community college auto programs and nonprofit garages exist, and 211 knows where they are.
- A $400 repair on a paid-off car almost always beats a new car payment.
Exercises
Do this right now (20 minutes)
27.1 — Do the five-minute check. Tire pressure on all four plus the spare, all fluid levels, all lights. Note anything wrong.
27.2 — Penny test your tires. All four, in multiple spots. Note the tread condition and any uneven wear.
27.3 — Find out if you have a spare. And whether it's inflated. And whether you have the jack and lug wrench. Many people discover the answer at the worst possible moment.
27.4 — Look up your timing belt. Search "[year] [make] [model] timing belt or chain" and "interference engine." Write down the answer and the replacement interval.
27.5 — Read your door jamb placard and one sidewall. Write down: recommended front and rear pressure, tire size, load index, speed rating, and the DOT date code. Compare the tire on the car to what the placard says should be there. Mismatches are common on used cars.
27.6 — Find your jack, lug wrench, and jack points, and find whether your battery is under the hood or somewhere else. Five minutes now; a very bad twenty minutes later if you skip it.
This week (3 hours)
27.7 — Download your owner's manual. Free PDF from the manufacturer. Find the maintenance schedule. Write down what's due at your current mileage, and decide honestly whether you're normal or severe service.
27.8 — Start a maintenance log. Every service, with date, mileage, cost, and shop. Go back through receipts if you have them. This is worth real money at resale and it stops you paying twice for the same job.
27.9 — Get your battery tested. Free at any auto parts store. Note its age and the test result. While you're there, have them read your check engine code if one is on.
27.10 — Check your roadside coverage. Insurance, credit card, manufacturer, AAA, and some phone plans. Write down which one you'd actually call and its number. A lot of people pay for AAA while already carrying identical coverage through their insurer.
27.11 — Replace your cabin air filter. Ten minutes, $20, behind the glovebox on most cars. Watch a video for your specific model. It's a good first DIY and the difference in airflow is usually noticeable.
27.12 — Set your mirrors properly, the way described in "Driving skills nobody teaches." Drive with them for a week before you judge it.
This month (varies)
27.13 — Practice changing a tire. In your driveway, on a dry day, with no pressure. Find the jack points. Loosen a lug nut. Do it once and it stops being frightening. Do not get under the car.
27.14 — Build the emergency kit. Jumper cables or a jump pack, flashlight, first aid kit, water, blanket, tire gauge, phone charger, work gloves, a quart of your oil, and a reflective triangle or flares. Winter items if applicable.
27.15 — Find your mechanic. Ask three people for recommendations. Try one with an oil change. Establish the relationship before you need it, because you cannot evaluate a stranger while your car is on their lift.
27.16 — Find your local low-cost repair options before you need them. Search for a community college automotive program that services customer vehicles, and call 211 to ask what car repair assistance exists in your area. Write both down. This takes twenty minutes and it is the exercise most likely to save you a thousand dollars.
27.17 — Open a car repair sinking fund and set an automatic transfer, even $25 a paycheck. Name the account "Car."
27.18 — Write your accident checklist. The 12 steps, in your phone notes and on a card in the glovebox with your insurance number on it. You will not remember them while shaking.
27.19 — Check your registration and inspection dates, and confirm the DMV has your current address. Put both expirations in your calendar with a two-week warning.
27.20 — Look up your open recalls. Enter your VIN at the NHTSA recall site (nhtsa.gov). Recall work is free at any franchise dealer regardless of the car's age or who owns it, and a surprising share of used cars have unperformed recalls.
Reflection
27.21 — What car maintenance were you taught, and by whom? What do you wish you'd been shown?
27.22 — Have you ever been overcharged or sold something unnecessary at a shop? What would you notice now?

Don't put in it: your VIN alongside a photo of your registration and insurance card in an unsecured cloud note — that combination is enough for someone to impersonate you to an insurer. And no SSNs, full account numbers, or passwords anywhere in the document.
