Bibliography

This is the short shelf — the books, standards, and official sources worth your money and your trust. It is deliberately not exhaustive. A working producer doesn't need fifty books; they need a handful they actually read twice, plus the primary documents for the moments when getting it exactly right matters (a loudness spec, a copyright registration, a royalty rule).

A note on how this list is built. Where a specific title is named below, it's a real, verifiable work by the listed author — check it out, buy it, borrow it. Where the field's best information lives in living documents that change — platform loudness targets, distributor requirements, copyright procedures, a country's licensing rules — this list points you at the primary or official source and tells you what kind of document to look for, rather than naming a book that would be out of date before the ink dried. When in doubt, the official source wins. Treat a confident-sounding blog post the way you'd treat a confident-sounding stranger at a party.

Entries are grouped by topic, and each notes which Part of this book it supports best.

Mixing

Mike Senior, Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio. The single most useful book for the reader this book was written for — someone mixing in an untreated room on imperfect monitors with a real-world budget. Senior's emphasis on reference tracks, monitoring honestly despite your room, and getting the balance right before reaching for plugins maps directly onto Parts V and VI. If you buy one outside book, buy this one. (The author also maintains a large library of raw multitrack sessions for practice — invaluable for the Listening Labs and the mix exercises throughout Part V.)

Bobby Owsinski, The Mixing Engineer's Handbook. A career engineer's organized tour of the craft — the elements of a mix, the role of each, interview wisdom from working professionals. Strong companion to Parts V–VI for understanding why the pros make the moves this book teaches you to make. Read it after you've done a few mixes of your own; it lands harder once you've felt the problems.

Recording

Bobby Owsinski, The Recording Engineer's Handbook. The practical reference for the capture stage: microphone types and polar patterns, placement for specific sources, and the signal path from instrument to recorder. Supports Part II (the tools — Chapters 7–8) and Part III (recording — Chapters 11–12) directly. When you're standing in front of a source wondering where to put the mic, this is the book that has already thought about it.

Manufacturer documentation for your specific gear. Not glamorous, but real: the official manual and application notes for your microphone, audio interface, and DAW are primary sources written by the people who built the thing. They'll tell you the true frequency response, the right phantom power behavior, the actual input levels — facts a forum post will often get wrong. Supports Parts I–III and the signal-chain literacy of Chapter 3.

Mastering

Bob Katz, Mastering Audio: The Art and the Science. The reference work on mastering and, more broadly, on loudness and metering done right. Katz goes deep on monitoring calibration, dynamics, dithering, and the listening discipline that mastering demands — denser than the rest of this shelf, and worth the climb when you reach Part VII (Chapters 31–33). His long advocacy for sane loudness practices is part of why the loudness war finally cooled. Read Chapter 31 of this book first, then Katz, then re-master.

The official documentation for any mastering or metering software you adopt. Limiters, loudness meters, and analyzers each implement the standards below slightly differently. The developer's own documentation is the primary source for what their tool measures and how. Supports Part VII and the loudness QA work in Chapter 33.

Acoustics & Psychoacoustics

The companion volume, The Physics of Music (DataField). The science under this book's engineering. Where Music Production teaches you what to do, the companion explains why it works — its chapters on psychoacoustics, timbre and the Fourier view of sound, electronic sound and synthesis, digital audio, room acoustics, and spatial audio are the theory behind Parts I, III, and VII here. You don't need to own it to use this book, but the two are built to sit side by side.

Primary acoustics references and published room-treatment guidance. For room modes, absorption, reflection control, and RT60 (Chapter 10), prefer established acoustics literature and the technical/application notes published by reputable acoustic-treatment manufacturers, who document the absorption behavior of real materials. Treat any single "magic dimensions" formula with caution — measure your own room. Supports Part II (Chapter 10) and the monitoring chapters.

Peer-reviewed hearing and psychoacoustics research, via primary literature. The equal-loudness story (Fletcher–Munson), masking, and localization rest on a century of published research; the modern equal-loudness contours are codified in an international standard (see ISO 226 under Standards). When this book states a psychoacoustic fact, it's drawing on that body of work — go to the primary literature or a graduate-level psychoacoustics text rather than a gear blog if you want the rigorous version. Supports Part I (Chapter 4) and the spatial chapter (Chapter 34).

Standards & Specifications

These are the actual rule-books. They're issued by standards bodies, they have version numbers, and they're the final word when a number has to be exactly right. Read the spec itself, from the issuing body, not a summary.

ITU-R BS.1770 (International Telecommunication Union). The algorithm that defines how loudness and true peak are measured — the math under every LUFS meter you'll use. The foundation document for all of Chapter 33. Everything else about streaming loudness is downstream of this.

EBU R128 (European Broadcasting Union). The loudness recommendation built on BS.1770 that standardized −23 LUFS for broadcast and popularized practical loudness metering (including the EBU's Loudness Range descriptor). Even though music streaming targets differ, R128 is why your meter has a target line at all. Supports Chapter 33.

AES (Audio Engineering Society) standards and publications. The professional body whose standards, conventions, and peer-reviewed Journal underpin much of audio engineering — converter performance, connector and level conventions, file formats, and more. The place to go for rigorous, citable answers on the engineering Parts (I–II) and mastering delivery (VII).

The Compact Disc standard ("Red Book"). The specification defining CD audio — 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, the format that set delivery conventions still echoing in sample rate and bit depth choices today. Context for Chapters 2 and 31.

ISO 226 (International Organization for Standardization). The standard that codifies the equal-loudness contours — the formal version of the Fletcher–Munson curves from Chapter 4. Cite this rather than a half-remembered graph when the exact curve matters.

Platform-specific loudness and delivery specs — from each platform directly. Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon, Tidal, and others each publish their own normalization targets and delivery requirements, and they change them. As of this writing the common landmarks are a streaming reference around −14 LUFS for music and around −16 LUFS for podcasts, with a recommended −1 dBTP ceiling — but always confirm against the platform's current published spec before you finalize a master. Supports Chapters 33 and 35.

The Business & Rights

Music-business facts are jurisdiction-specific and they change with legislation and platform policy. For this reason the entries here point to official sources — the bodies that actually administer the rights and the money — rather than to any book that would age out. Read the primary source for your own country; what follows describes the kind of source to find.

Your national copyright office (official government source). The authoritative source on what copyright protects, how registration works, and the distinction between the composition and the master rights (Chapter 36). In the United States this is the U.S. Copyright Office; every country has its equivalent. Go here, not to a forum, when registration or ownership is on the line.

Performing rights organizations (PROs), official documentation. ASCAP, BMI, SESAC (US), PRS (UK), SOCAN (Canada), and their global counterparts publish how songwriter and publisher registration works and how performance royalties are collected and paid. Your PRO's own help documentation is the primary source for Chapter 36's registration steps. Mechanical rights administration (e.g., the body that handles mechanical licensing in your territory) is a separate official source worth finding.

Your chosen distributor's official documentation. DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, Amuse, and others each publish current requirements for metadata, ISRC/UPC assignment, release timelines, and supported delivery specs. Because these change and differ by service, the distributor's own help center is the source for Chapter 35 — not a year-old tutorial.

Reputable music-business reference works and educators. For the broader landscape — publishing deals, licensing, royalty flows, and artist economics — seek out established, regularly updated music-business books and the educational material published by recognized industry organizations. Prefer sources that cite current law and disclose their date. Supports Part VIII (Chapters 35–37). Verify any specific royalty figure against a primary source before you rely on it; rates and splits are set by law and contract, not by rule of thumb.

Ear Training & Listening

Reputable ear-training platforms and frequency-recognition tools. The skill at the heart of this book (Chapter 4 and Appendix F) is built by repetition. Established interactive ear-training tools that drill frequency-band recognition, EQ matching, and dynamics by ear are worth more than any amount of reading — they turn passive knowledge into a trained reflex. Use whatever current tool lets you practice daily; the practice matters more than the brand. Supports Part I and every Listening Lab in the book.

Your reference tracks — the most important "text" you own. Not a book, but the primary source you'll consult most. A curated playlist of professionally produced records in your genre, played on your system, is the compass this book keeps pointing back to (Theme T4). The gap between your mix and a pro reference is your to-do list. Build the playlist in Chapter 4 and consult it through every Part.

Lossless, full-resolution listening. However you assemble your references and study material, listen at full resolution where you can, on monitoring you've learned to trust (Chapter 8). Heavily compressed playback hides exactly the detail you're training your ears to catch.


A standing caveat

This field moves. Standards get revised, platforms change their loudness targets and their upload requirements, distributors and PROs update their procedures, copyright law shifts with legislation and court rulings, and tools — especially AI tools (Chapter 38) — appear and vanish fast. Every web link in audio rots eventually. So treat dated specifics here as a snapshot, confirm the numbers that matter against the issuing body's current published source before you finalize anything, and prefer primary and official documents over secondhand summaries. The principles in the main chapters are durable; the exact figures are not. When the two disagree, trust your ears for the music and the official source for the spec.
