Chapter 34 Further Reading

Everything below is real as of this writing; editions, URLs, and platform features drift faster in this corner of audio than anywhere else in the book, so search by title and author when a link ages out. Two chapter-specific warnings before you wade in. First, spatial-audio content online is dominated by format evangelism in both directions — breathless "stereo is dead" futurism and reflexive "it's quad again" dismissal — and both genres are allergic to the cost-benefit honesty you actually need; read everything with the T3 ledger open. Second, the technical documentation here is unusually good and unusually free: the format owner publishes its specs openly, and the foundational psychoacoustics is in the companion volume you may already have. Start there before paying for anything.

Beginner

  • The companion volume, The Physics of Music, Chapter 35 (spatial audio) and Chapter 5 (psychoacoustics). The science under this entire chapter — interaural cues, the precedence effect, localization, and the spatial-hearing mechanisms your HRTF rides on — at exactly the depth a producer needs. If this chapter's "why" sections left you hungry, this is the next meal.
  • Dolby's public Atmos documentation (dolby.com). The format owner maintains free, genuinely readable material for musicians and engineers: what Atmos is, authoring workflows, monitoring options including binaural, and the music delivery specifications this chapter hedged as "as of this writing." Read the spec from the source rather than from forum summaries — it's shorter than the forum threads about it.
  • Your DAW's spatial/Atmos documentation. The unglamorous essential, again: if your DAW authors Atmos or offers binaural monitoring, its manual chapter is the fastest route from this book's concepts to your actual session. Appendix E translates the vocabulary across DAWs; check what you already own before buying anything (Aisha's lesson, in writing).
  • Platform creator guidelines for spatial audio. The major streaming services that carry spatial catalogs publish requirements and best-practice notes for artists and labels. They change; skim them when a release decision is live, not before.

Intermediate

  • Sound on Sound magazine's immersive-audio features (soundonsound.com). The archive carries practical Atmos mixing walkthroughs, studio profiles, and interviews with engineers doing commissioned spatial work — useful calibration for how working mixers actually spend the new real estate, and how much restraint the good ones apply. Search "Atmos mixing" and start with the most recent.
  • Agnieszka Roginska & Paul Geluso (eds.), Immersive Sound: The Art and Science of Binaural and Multi-Channel Audio (Routledge). The standard single-volume survey: binaural recording and rendering, HRTFs, multichannel formats, and ambisonics, written by researchers and practitioners. The right next step when this chapter's map needs more terrain detail.
  • The free academic ambisonic/binaural plugin suites. University research groups maintain excellent free toolsets that turn any major DAW into a spatial laboratory — the IEM Plug-in Suite (from the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics in Graz) and the SPARTA suite (from Aalto University's acoustics lab) are the established names; search either and you'll find binaural panners, ambisonic encoders, and renderers at the unbeatable price of zero. Exercise C2 runs happily on them.
  • Hugh Robjohns' and similar explainers on binaural and crosstalk. Sound on Sound's technical editors have covered the binaural-on-speakers problem, dummy-head recording, and headphone localization repeatedly and accurately — search the archive for "binaural" for the engineering-grade version of this chapter's speaker-collapse section.

Advanced

  • Michael Gerzon, "Periphony: With-Height Sound Reproduction" (Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, 1973). The founding ambisonics paper — the full mathematical framework for encoding and reproducing the sound field, decades before the hardware existed to care. Historic, rigorous, and the direct ancestor of every B-format tool in the free suites above.
  • The public HRTF research databases. Measured head-related transfer functions from real subject populations are freely available for study (the CIPIC database from UC Davis is the long-standing reference; newer sets exist) — browse one and you'll see the person-to-person variance from the sidebar as actual measured curves. The accompanying papers document how HRTFs are measured and why generic ones fit unevenly.
  • The Audio Engineering Society e-library (aes.org). The research literature on spatial audio is vast and active: binaural rendering quality, externalization, head tracking, personalized HRTF estimation, and renderer evaluation all have current paper trails. Search "binaural rendering" or "externalization" and follow citations; this is where the hedged claims in this chapter get their error bars.
  • Robert Charles Alexander, The Inventor of Stereo: The Life and Works of Alan Dower Blumlein (Focal Press). The full biography behind case study 1's opening act — the 1931 patent, the EMI experiments, the radar work, and the short life of the engineer whose groove geometry your stereo records still use. Essential context for anyone who wants the history rhyme with all its verses.

For Educators

  • Open with the demo, then immediately measure it: play a strong binaural clip to the class on their own headphones, then survey — who got externalization, who got front-back reversals, who got "weird stereo"? Tally the results on the board. The HRTF-variance lesson teaches itself from the class's own distribution, and it inoculates against both hype and dismissal in one exercise.
  • Run the blindfold localization test (exercise B3) live with one volunteer and a set of keys: the class watches real spatial hearing succeed, hesitate at front-back, and resolve itself with head movement. Every mechanism in the chapter's science core appears in ninety seconds, for free.
  • Pair case study 1 with audio: a ping-pong-era stereo demonstration track, an early hard-panned Beatles stereo mix, a mature modern stereo mix, then a current spatial mix — and moderate the discussion on where today's spatial era sits on the gimmick → afterthought → invisible-craft arc. Students place it differently, and the disagreement is the seminar.
  • Assign the stems brief (exercise C3) as the graded artifact. It assesses session hygiene, format understanding, and judgment (anchor flags, placement candidates) in one document, requires zero spatial hardware, and produces something each student can actually use professionally — which is the chapter's whole argument about where the real investment lives.
  • For programs with audio-drama or game-audio tracks: case study 2's accessibility law (no story-critical information carried by position alone) makes an excellent design-review checklist item — have students audit each other's spatial scenes against it before any technical critique.
