Part II — The Building Blocks
Part I gave you the principles. Part II gives you the tools. A document is built from the sentence up: words chosen, sentences made correct and varied, paragraphs stitched so they flow, figures that interpret rather than decorate, a page designed to be read, sources cited honestly, and the whole thing revised until it's good. These are the craft skills — the chisels and planes of writing — and they transfer to every genre in the rest of the book. A lab report, a README, a board memo, and a blog post all run on clean sentences and coherent paragraphs. Master the building blocks here and the field-specific chapters become a matter of conventions, not fundamentals.
The move that matters most in this part is learning to diagnose. Amateur revision works by feel — "this reads better now." Professional revision names the problem: this is a dangling modifier, that's a cohesion gap, this caption labels where it should interpret. A fix you can name is a fix that transfers; a fix by feel doesn't. Every chapter here hands you a vocabulary for what's wrong, so you stop staring at a weak passage hoping inspiration strikes and start working a checklist.
By the end of Part II you will be able to hunt the errors that plague technical prose one family at a time; set tone and register on purpose instead of by accident; order information within a paragraph so it flows; choose between a figure, a table, and prose by the reader's task; design a page a reader doesn't flinch from; cite sources so every claim is verifiable; and run a revision in the right order — content before commas.

- Chapter 7 — Word Choice, Tone, and Voice: connotation, register, calibrated certainty, and inclusive language — the dials you set deliberately once you can see them.
- Chapter 8 — Paragraphs That Flow: Cohesion, Transitions, Sequence — flow lives in the seams between sentences, so you reorder for given-new before you reword.
- Chapter 9 — Visuals and Data: Figures, Tables, Charts, Captions — a figure doesn't speak for itself; the caption that says what it means is the most important sentence attached to it.
- Chapter 10 — Design and Layout: Documents People Want to Read — design is part of the meaning, and a reader decides whether to read before reading a word.
- Chapter 11 — Citing Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism: IEEE/APA/Chicago/ACS, honest paraphrase versus patchwriting, reference managers, and AI integrity.
- Chapter 12 — Editing and Revision: Adequate → Excellent — the editing hierarchy worked top-down, self-editing tactics, and how to give and take feedback.
These chapters depend on Part I but are largely independent of one another, so you can read them in the order your work demands. Two soft sequences are worth respecting: sentences (Chapter 6) before paragraphs (Chapter 8), since you connect sentences only after they're sound; and everything before editing (Chapter 12), which is where these skills get deployed in a disciplined pass rather than all at once. Chapter 12 is also the chapter Part I's writing process pointed toward — the place revision stops being advice and becomes a repeatable procedure.
This part carries every theme, but it leans hardest on three. Every sentence must earn its place runs through the conciseness of Chapter 6, the word-by-word choices of Chapter 7, and the cutting that revision demands in Chapter 12. Clarity is not the enemy of precision governs Chapter 3's heir, Chapter 6, where correctness is precision — a dangling modifier can claim something false. And the best writing is invisible is the standard for the whole part: varied sentences that never trip the reader, captions that disappear into their meaning, a page so well designed you notice only the content. Chapter 9 and Chapter 11 also revive the Challenger and the citation-honesty discipline you'll meet again in the ethics chapter.
The Communication Portfolio advances steadily here. Chapter 9 begins the data-analysis memo's visuals, Chapter 10 sets the design standard every piece will meet, and Chapter 12 establishes the revision rule — every portfolio piece revised at least once — that becomes non-negotiable by the end.
With the building blocks in hand, the book turns to whole genres. Part III applies them to the documents of academic and scientific work, where the same sentences and structures take on the conventions of the lab report, the research paper, and the grant.
