Further Reading — Chapter 16: Theses and Dissertations

Annotated, Tier 1 & 2 sources only — durable, locatable guides on writing and surviving the long-form research document, not blog listicles. Apply this chapter's own test as you read elsewhere: does the advice help you govern a multi-year project around one claim, or just offer prose tips? The first is what finishes a thesis; the second is the easy part.


On finishing the thing (start here)

Joan Bolker, Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day. Holt (current edition). The classic, and the natural companion to §16.5. Bolker's title is its thesis: the cure for "write the dissertation" — a task too big to start — is to shrink the unit of work below the threshold of dread, and to write continuously rather than banking it all for the end. Read it for the psychology of the long project: the daily writing habit, the relationship with your advisor, the way drafting badly-but-early is what keeps research from collapsing into a year of unwritten risk. It is short, humane, and unusually honest about the emotional reality of a years-long project. If you read one source on getting it done (as opposed to getting it structured), read this. (Tier 1.)

Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, et al., The Craft of Research. University of Chicago Press (current edition). The best book on research as argument, and the source for the spine of this chapter's thinking. Its treatment of moving from a topic to a question to a claim (§16.2's ladder), of defining a problem by what others haven't resolved, and of the "so what?" / "says who?" tests is exactly the scoping discipline taught here, applied at any length. (Note the shared lineage: Joseph Williams is the Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace author this book cites elsewhere — the same clarity discipline aimed at the architecture of research.) The thesis is the longest thing you'll ever apply this book to. (Tier 1.)


On scope, structure, and the academy (Tier 2)

Umberto Eco, How to Write a Thesis. MIT Press (English translation of the Italian classic). Eco wrote it for humanities students decades ago, and parts are charmingly dated (it predates word processors), but its core counsel is permanent and squarely this chapter's: choose a narrow, defensible topic over a grand one, treat the thesis as an apprenticeship in doing research properly, and let the argument — not the page count — govern. A useful counterweight to the empirical-science framing of §16.3, since it models the argument-driven monograph structure many humanities theses use. (Tier 2 — a real, well-known book; we don't pin a specific edition's pagination.)

Your own institution's thesis and defense handbook. The single most authoritative source for your case. This chapter teaches principles — claim, scope, schedule, ownership — that hold across fields and countries. The format does not: the UK viva with two examiners differs from the US public defense; the "three-paper" thesis changes your scheduling and scope decisions; submission formatting, committee composition, and timeline rules are program-specific (§16.9). The handbook and your department's filing requirements overrule every general guide — including this one — on any point of procedure. (Tier 2 — the authoritative local source by definition.)

Recent, successful theses from your own research group. The best available model. Read three, recently passed, from people your advisor supervised. They show you — better than any book — what this committee expects: chapter logic, length norms, how the contribution is stated, how the methodology chapter handles reproducibility in your subfield, and what a defensible scope looks like. The principles here tell you what to look for; the local exemplars tell you the conventions. (Tier 2 — direct primary evidence of your venue's norms.)


Within this book

The thesis is where earlier skills combine at maximum scale. Chapter 14 (Research Papers) gives the hourglass and IMRaD that §16.3 stretches across an entire book — and a single paper often becomes one chapter. Chapter 15 (Literature Reviews and Research Synthesis) supplies the synthesis-toward-a-gap discipline and the synthesis matrix that the dissertation's literature-review chapter (§16.7) scales to a hundred sources without collapsing into a hundred summaries. Chapter 5 (the writing process) is the backbone of §16.5: schedule backward, protect revision time, plan-but-expect-the-plan-to-change — every rule here is Chapter 5 scaled from one document to a multi-year project. Looking forward, Chapter 17 (Grant Proposals) takes the scoped, claimed project and compresses its contribution into the Specific Aims page — the scoping muscle from §16.2 under the harshest length constraint in the academy.


A note on what's not here. No "dissertation template you can fill in," and no productivity-app recommendation. A fill-in-the-blank template can't know what your contribution is — that's the one thing only your claim defines (§16.3), and the seams between chapters, where a template is silent, are what turn separate documents into one thesis. And the tool that tracks your subsections matters far less than having a visible "done" column at all (§16.5) — any wall, spreadsheet, or board works. When a general guide and your program's handbook disagree on procedure, the handbook wins; when any guide and your signed proposal disagree on scope, the proposal wins. Those two documents, not this list, govern your thesis.
