How to Use This Book

This book serves many readers — academic researchers, nonprofit staff, educators, artists, small-business founders, community organizers, and the administrators who support them — without forcing any of them down a single path. This guide explains how the book is built, the callouts you will meet, the learning paths for different readers, and how to get the most from the progressive project that turns this book into a real, submittable proposal.

How Each Chapter Is Built

Every chapter follows a consistent structure so you always know where to find what you need.

Main Content (index.md)

The main chapter develops its ideas in a deliberate order: a concrete situation first, then the principle, then the reviewer psychology behind it, then templates and worked examples, then the mistakes that sink proposals. Chapters open with a real scenario and a promise of what you will be able to do by the end, and they close with a summary, a spaced review of earlier material, and a checkpoint that advances your own proposal.

Exercises (exercises.md)

Each chapter's exercises are organized into four parts:

  • Part A — Recall and Understand. Short questions that check whether you absorbed the chapter's key ideas and vocabulary. No drafting required, only thought.
  • Part B — Apply. Hands-on tasks: critique a sample passage, fill in a template, build a small budget, rewrite a weak paragraph.
  • Part C — Analyze and Create. The heart of the practice: draft real sections, design an evaluation plan, respond to a reviewer critique, research funders for your project.
  • Part M — Mixed Review. Interleaved problems that revisit earlier chapters so the craft compounds rather than evaporating.

Grant writing is learned by writing grants, so Part C is where the learning lives. Selected solutions and model answers appear in the appendix.

Quiz (quiz.md)

A short self-check (roughly 12–18 questions) covering the chapter's essential ideas, with answers in collapsible blocks. If you can answer these confidently, you own the chapter.

Case Studies (case-study-01.md, case-study-02.md)

Two extended, realistic scenarios per chapter that show the chapter's ideas at work — typically one academic/research scenario and one nonprofit/community scenario, so every reader sees the principles operate at their own scale.

Key Takeaways (key-takeaways.md)

A concise summary card — core ideas, action items, common mistakes, and a decision framework — for review and quick reference before a deadline.

Callout Guide

Throughout the text you will meet these callouts. Each has a consistent meaning:

💡 Key Insight: The single most important idea in a section, stated as plainly as possible. If you remember nothing else, remember this.

🗣️ From the Review Panel: The reviewer's-eye view — what your words look like to a tired person reading their thirtieth proposal this weekend. These are the most valuable boxes in the book.

Callouts are used sparingly on purpose. If every other paragraph were a box, none would stand out.

The Learning Paths

The main narrative is written for everyone. Your path tells you which chapters to prioritize, which to read closely, and which to skim on a first pass. You can always come back.

🔬 Academic Researcher

Your goal: Win research funding from NIH, NSF, and similar agencies across your career.

Read Parts I–II in full (strategy and every component), then Chapters 16–17 (NIH, NSF) for your agency, Chapters 11–12 (budget and justification) closely, Chapter 22 (resubmission — essential; most R01s are funded on resubmission), and Chapter 27 (the academic funding career arc, from dissertation grants to the R01). The specific aims page (Chapter 6) is your single highest-leverage chapter; spend real time there.

🏢 Nonprofit Professional

Your goal: Diversify and grow organizational funding from foundations and government.

Read Parts I–II in full, then Chapter 7 (executive summary), Chapter 10 (evaluation — increasingly decisive), Chapter 14 (sustainability — the question every funder asks), Chapters 18–19 (foundations, government), and Chapter 28 (the nonprofit funding ecosystem). The letter of inquiry and the relationship-driven foundation process in Chapter 18 deserve close attention.

🎓 Graduate Student

Your goal: Win your first fellowship or training grant.

Read Parts I–II with emphasis on Chapter 6 (specific aims) and Chapter 16 (NIH fellowships — F31, and the K-award career ladder), plus Chapter 27. Do not skip Chapter 2 (thinking like a funder); it is the difference between a competitive application and a confused one.

🏫 Educator

Your goal: Fund your classroom, your school, or your district.

Read Parts I–II for the fundamentals, then Chapter 19 (government and formula funding, Title I, IDEA, STEM) and Chapter 29 (writing grants as a teacher with no time and enormous need, from small grants up). Chapter 8 (needs assessment) and Chapter 11 (budget) are your workhorses.

🎨 Artist / Creative

Your goal: Win fellowships, project grants, and commissions for creative work.

Read Parts I–II with an eye to translating creative vision into reviewer-legible terms, then Chapter 18 (foundations and arts funders) and Chapter 30 (the artist statement as a grant form, work samples, and describing artistic merit to non-artist panels).

Standard / Deep Read

Read all 35 chapters in order. The funder-specific and sector-specific chapters (Parts III and V) reinforce the universal principles of Parts I–II by showing them adapt to different cultures and rules. The application chapters are natural resting points to consolidate.

The Progressive Project: Your Real Proposal

This is the most important thing this book asks of you. Choose a real project you genuinely want to fund — your research, your program, your initiative — and build an actual proposal for it as you read. Look for the 📐 Project Checkpoint near the end of each chapter; each one adds a component:

  • Part I: Select your project; research and confirm a target funder; map the proposal you will write.
  • Part II: Draft each core component — aims or executive summary, needs/significance, narrative, evaluation, budget, capacity, sustainability — into a complete first draft.
  • Part III: Tailor that draft to your specific funder's format and review criteria.
  • Parts IV–V: Strengthen it, adapt it to your sector, and prepare for review, resubmission, and stewardship.
  • Part VI: Assemble the toolkit, review the full package against the funder's criteria, run a peer review with a colleague, and finalize a proposal you can submit.

By the last chapter, you will not have studied grant writing. You will have written a grant. That is the whole point.

A Note Before You Begin

Funder rules — deadlines, page limits, mechanisms, review criteria, eligibility — change constantly, and they vary by program. This book teaches the durable craft and explains how each funder type thinks, but it cannot substitute for the funder's current, official instructions. For any real proposal: find the specific funding opportunity announcement, read it twice, and verify every requirement against it before you submit.
