How does the answer to that question affect your evaluation of detection technology as a solution?
40.3 Automated Polling: AI-Assisted Surveys and Synthetic Respondents
Political polling has always been expensive relative to the questions it is trying to answer. A single high-quality national telephone poll with a sample of 1,000 respondents can cost $40,000 to $80,000 by the time fielding, data cleaning, weighting, and analysis are complete. This cost constrains how frequently polling is conducted, which constituencies are studied, and which questions get asked.
AI is beginning to transform both the cost structure and the methodology of political polling in ways that create significant opportunities and significant risks.
40.3.1 AI-Assisted Survey Interviewing

In political analytics, the questions that matter most — who is ahead in this specific race? how are persuadable voters in this specific district responding to this specific message? — are precisely the questions where synthetic respondents are least reliable, because they require local specificity that general-purpose LLMs do not have. Using synthetic respondents as a substitute for actual polling in election contexts is not a cost-saving innovation; it is a methodological failure with potentially significant decision consequences.
The ethical dimensions of synthetic respondent polling go beyond accuracy. If political campaigns rely on simulated rather than actual public opinion for their decisions, the feedback loop between political decision-making and actual voter preferences is broken. Democracy's self-correcting mechanism — campaigns that ignore what voters actually want lose elections — depends on campaigns being exposed to actual voter opinion. Synthetic respondents simulate that exposure without providing it.
40.4 AI in Campaign Analytics: Optimization at Scale
Beyond communication and polling, AI is transforming the core analytics functions of campaign operations: voter targeting, field program optimization, resource allocation, and competitive intelligence.
Automated voter contact prioritization: Machine learning models that prioritize voter contact lists — choosing whom to call, knock on, or message — have been standard practice since the early 2010s. Current systems apply more sophisticated model architectures (gradient boosting, neural networks) to richer feature sets, with automated retraining cycles that update predictions as new data comes in during the campaign. Recommendation algorithms therefore systematically expose users to more emotionally intense political content than they would encounter in a less algorithmically mediated information environment.
Contested findings: Whether recommendation algorithms produce political polarization (increased ideological extremism) or simply reflect it (users who are already extreme consume more extreme content) is empirically contested. AI-generated content may have no identifiable human author whose interests can be evaluated.
