Chapter 15 — Further Reading

Grouped by the book's three evidence tiers (style bible §7). Tier 1 is canonical and safe to build on; Tier 2 is attributed industry work whose exact figures we have not verified; Tier 3 is this book's own constructed material. Prefer the primary sources first — most of what you need about internal linking and site structure is in Google's own documentation, free.

Tier 1 — Verified canonical (start here)

  • Google Search Central — "Links" and internal linking guidance (developers.google.com/search). Google's own statements that internal links help it discover pages and understand a site's structure and the relative importance of its pages. The primary source for §15.4's Evidence Check; read it before any third-party "internal linking guide."
  • Google Search Central — URL structure best practices. The canonical guidance on descriptive, stable URLs and the recommendation to use hyphens (not underscores) between words. Grounds §15.2.
  • Google Search Central — Crawl-budget management for large sites; and the "Discovered/Crawled – currently not indexed" documentation. Explains crawl priority and how depth/importance affect crawling — the mechanism behind §15.1 and §15.7. (Also relevant: Chapter 14's fundamentals.)
  • Google Search Central — Breadcrumb structured data. How a breadcrumb trail can render in the SERP; the markup half of §15.3 (fully covered in Chapter 18).
  • Google's 2009 change to nofollow and PageRank (Matt Cutts / Google Webmaster Central). The public statement that nofollowed links no longer redirect PageRank to other links — the factual basis for retiring "PageRank sculpting" in §15.6.
  • Page, L., & Brin, S. (1998), "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine," and the original PageRank paper. The model underneath "link equity." We use only its intuition here; its full treatment (and honest formula) is Chapter 22 — read it there.
  • Google Search Central — Google Search Console "Links" report documentation. How to read internal-link counts per page; the tool behind this chapter's 🛠️ Try It on Your Site tasks.

Tier 2 — Attributed, specifics unverified (useful, read critically)

  • The major SEO tool vendors' guides to internal linking and site architecture (Ahrefs, Moz, Semrush, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land). Consistently good on practice — how to run an internal-link audit, find orphans, design hubs. Treat any specific correlation figure ("pages with N internal links rank X% higher") as directional, not proven, exactly as §15.4's Evidence Check warns.
  • Practitioner writing on the pillar-and-cluster / topic-cluster model (originating largely in the content marketing community). The content-strategy framing whose architectural implementation is this chapter's hub-and-spoke (§15.6); pair with Chapter 8.
  • Desktop-crawler documentation (e.g., the free tier of Screaming Frog SEO Spider). How to crawl a site to find crawl depth, orphan pages, and redirect chains — the thorough version of §15.1's and §15.7's audits. (The tool itself is revisited in Chapter 30.)
  • Nielsen Norman Group — research on web navigation, information scent, and scanning behavior (F-pattern, etc.). The usability evidence behind curated navigation and the honest, non-folklore version of the "three-click" idea (§15.1, §15.3).

Tier 3 — Illustrative / constructed (this book)

  • Rivertown Home Services — the running project; the designed architecture in this chapter's Strategy File (Figure 15.2) and the internal-link fix for the #11 page (Figure 15.1). All figures constructed.
  • Case Study 15.1 (Wikipedia) — a real, public exemplar analyzed with observable facts only; the interpretation (architecture as a force multiplier for earned authority) is this book's.
  • Case Study 15.2 (the redesign that orphaned half the site) — a clearly-labeled composite of common, documented patterns; all magnitudes illustrative.

Suggested order

  1. Google Search Central's internal-linking and URL-structure pages — the canonical ground truth, free.
  2. This chapter's 🛠️ Try It on Your Site tasks — run the Search Console Internal Links report on a real site while the concepts are fresh.
  3. A vendor guide to running an internal-link / orphan audit (Tier 2) — for the step-by-step procedure, read critically for inflated figures.
  4. The crawler docs (Tier 2) — when you're ready to crawl a whole site for depth and orphans.
  5. Forward to Chapter 22 (PageRank) and Chapter 8 (pillar-cluster) — to see the model beneath "link equity" and the content strategy beneath "hub-and-spoke," then back here to wire them together.
