Chapter 25 — Key Takeaways

A one-page field card for local SEO. For the full reasoning and the honest limits, see index.md.

The core model

  • Two contests, not one. The local pack (map + ~3 businesses) is driven by your Google Business Profile. The localized organic links below it are classic SEO, tinted by location. You can win one and lose the other.
  • Google's three stated local factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance/proximity (how close you are to the searcher — you can't optimize this), and prominence (how well known/regarded you are — reviews, links, directories, organic standing).
  • The strategic consequence: win the two factors you can influence (relevance, prominence), and cover the one you can't (proximity) with real locations.

The levers, in order of leverage

Lever The move Honest limit
Google Business Profile Claim, verify, complete every field; correct primary category; real business name Doesn't beat proximity or guarantee a pack spot
Reviews Ask every customer at the right moment; frictionless link; respond to all Count + score confirmed by Google; weight unknown; won't overpower proximity
NAP consistency Fix conflicts across a short list of quality sources Hygiene, not a growth lever; volume is a vanity metric
Location pages Rebuild thin/duplicate pages into genuine local resources Wins organic, not the pack; scale system is Ch 33
Local links Chamber, sponsorships, suppliers, local press Relevance beats "authority"; slow, small, compounding

Rules of thumb

  • Primary category is the highest-impact GBP field. Choose the most specific accurate one.
  • Consistency > volume for both citations and reviews of "SEO effort."
  • Distinct real locations (own address, phone, reviews, page) — never cloned or fake ones.
  • "Near me" is automatic — Google localizes almost every commercial query whether you type it or not.
  • A location page's job is localized organic + reinforcing the profile, not winning the pack.

The bright lines (don't cross these)

  • ❌ Keyword-stuffing the profile name → suspension risk.
  • Fake locations / virtual offices you don't staff → suspension risk (can hit your real profiles too).
  • Fake, incentivized, or gated reviews → Google removal/penalty and (U.S.) FTC penalties.
  • Doorway pages (near-duplicate "[city] + service" pages) → thin-content problem, not fifty rankings.
  • ✅ The legitimate "we serve there but aren't based there" tool is the service-area business (SAB) setting on your nearest real branch.
