An API (Application Programming Interface) is a way for one software system to talk to another. AI company APIs allow you to send text to their AI models and receive responses programmatically — in code, in automated workflows, or via tools that have integrated the API.
Why would a non-developer want API access?
- Automation tools. Platforms like Zapier, Make (formerly Integromat), and n8n can use AI APIs to build automated workflows without writing code. You might set up a workflow that automatically summarizes incoming emails, generates a first-draft response, or routes content through an AI filter.
- Specialized tools. Many AI-powered apps (writing tools, research tools, transcription tools) are built on top of AI APIs. Understanding this helps you evaluate those tools.
- Custom tooling. If you work with developers, understanding API access helps you articulate what you want built.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic provide API access through their developer portals. You create an API key, which is a secret credential that your code or automation tool uses to authenticate requests. API usage is billed separately from chat interface subscriptions, based on the number of tokens processed.
5.9 Privacy Considerations: Enterprise vs. Consumer Accounts
Privacy configuration is an area where many professionals make decisions by default rather than by choice, and the defaults are not always appropriate for professional use.
The core question: does your AI tool learn from your data?
Consumer accounts on most AI platforms use conversations to improve the model by default. This means your inputs, your outputs, your document contents, and your prompts may be reviewed by human trainers or used to update the model. For personal use, this may be acceptable. For professional use involving confidential business information, client data, or sensitive personal information, this is a significant concern.
How to check and change your data settings:
For ChatGPT: Settings > Data Controls > "Improve the model for everyone" can be turned off. Doing so means your conversations are not used for training.
