Part 1 does not treat ethics as background material to skim before getting to the "real" content. This chapter surveys the landscape of AI governance — internal ethics boards, external audits, regulatory frameworks, industry standards, and multi-stakeholder initiatives — and introduces the governance concepts that will recur throughout the book. It argues that effective AI governance is not a single solution but a layered system of mutually reinforcing accountability mechanisms.

The Five Recurring Themes in Part 1
The tension between innovation and precaution appears immediately in Chapter 1, which acknowledges that AI ethics is sometimes used to slow down beneficial technology unnecessarily, and sometimes invoked too late to prevent serious harm. Learning to calibrate this tension is one of the central skills the book develops.
Power distribution is a throughline in Chapter 4. Stakeholder mapping is not a neutral technical exercise — it reflects decisions about whose interests count and how much. Chapter 4 explicitly addresses the political dimensions of those decisions.
The question of who bears harms and who captures benefits runs through Chapter 5's business case analysis. The business case for ethics is strongest when harms and benefits fall on the same parties; it weakens when those who profit from an AI system are insulated from its costs.
Governance under uncertainty is the subject of Chapter 6, which must deal honestly with the fact that AI systems are changing faster than governance frameworks can adapt. This tension — between the need for structure and the reality of change — will recur in every subsequent part.
The relationship between technical systems and human values is foundational to Chapter 3. The ethical frameworks introduced there are not abstract philosophy; they are articulations of values that real organizations try, imperfectly, to embed in the systems they build.

Chapters 3 and 5 should be read in dialogue. The ethical frameworks of Chapter 3 provide the philosophical grounding for the business case arguments in Chapter 5 — and Chapter 5 tests those frameworks against organizational reality. Readers who find Chapter 3 too abstract should read Chapter 5 immediately afterward; readers who find Chapter 5 too instrumental should revisit Chapter 3 with fresh eyes.
Chapter 4's stakeholder mapping methodology is a practical application of the frameworks introduced in Chapter 3. Consequentialist analysis requires knowing who is affected and how; deontological analysis requires knowing whose rights are implicated; care ethics requires identifying whose relationships and dependencies are in play. The stakeholder map is not a separate exercise from ethical analysis — it is the first step of it.
Chapter 6's governance overview is also a preview of the book's architecture. Many of the governance mechanisms introduced briefly in Chapter 6 — auditing, impact assessment, ethics review — receive full treatment in later parts. Chapter 6 gives readers a map; the rest of the book fills in the territory.
A Note on Tone and Approach
This book is written for business professionals who take their responsibilities seriously. It does not assume prior knowledge of philosophy, computer science, or law. It does assume that you are willing to think carefully, sit with uncertainty when certainty is not available, and sometimes reach conclusions that are inconvenient or commercially complicated.
AI ethics is not a field with clean answers. The frameworks in Chapter 3 will sometimes conflict with each other. The stakeholders in Chapter 4 will sometimes have irreconcilable interests. The business case in Chapter 5 will sometimes point in a different direction than the moral argument. The governance structures in Chapter 6 will sometimes be inadequate to the problems they are designed to address. This book will not pretend otherwise. What it will do is give you better tools for reasoning through these situations, better questions to ask, and a clearer sense of what is at stake when the answers are difficult.
