Part I — Foundations of Forensic Science
Before you can judge whether a fingerprint, a fire, or a DNA "match" means what someone says it means, you need the ground to stand on. That ground is what Part I lays down. These six chapters build the vocabulary, the habits of mind, and — above all — the single yardstick by which the rest of the book measures every method: the validity spectrum, the honest ranking of how strong the scientific foundation for a method's core claim actually is. By the end of this part you will own the four themes, the difference between excluding a suspect and proving guilt, and a permanent skepticism about the word "match."
The arc runs from the idea to the institution to the reckoning. We start with what forensic science actually is, as opposed to what television has taught you it is. We move to the place where most cases are won or lost — the crime scene — and to the physical evidence that scenes give up. We go inside the laboratory that turns that evidence into testimony, and then into the courtroom that decides whether to believe it. And we end where the field itself has had to end: with an honest accounting of its own failures.

- Chapter 5 — The Scientific Method in the Courtroom: Daubert, Frye, and When "Science" Isn't Scientific explains how courts, not scientists, decide what counts as science at trial — and why that gate admits more junk than you would expect.
- Chapter 6 — The History of Forensic Failure: Wrongful Convictions, Junk Science, and the Innocence Project closes the part with the field's reckoning: the 2009 NAS and 2016 PCAST reports, the DNA exonerations, and the wrongful-conviction risk made personal when a false confession nearly closes the Cold Case.
Every theme appears here, because this is where they are born — but Part I advances two above the rest. The first is not all forensic methods are equally valid: Chapters 5 and 6 build the validity spectrum directly, from the courtroom's admissibility standards to the scientific reckoning that exposed how much of the field never earned its place. The second is exclusion over proof: from Chapter 1's central claim that forensic science's surest voice is the one that says not this person, through the exoneration record that proves it. Master these foundations and the forty chapters ahead become not a list of techniques to memorize, but a single argument to follow.
