Chapter 10 — Further Reading

Grouped by the book's three citation tiers (see the Bibliography note in the front matter). Tier 1 sources we are confident exist and stand behind; Tier 2 real ideas/figures whose exact citation should be verified before quoting precisely; Tier 3 the constructed teaching material in this book. Read the NAS report's BPA section first — it is short, blunt, and frames everything in §10.6.

Tier 1 — Verified canonical

  • National Research Council / National Academy of Sciences, Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward (2009). The foundational reckoning. Its section on bloodstain pattern analysis is the single most important reading for §10.4–10.6: it found BPA interpretations often "more subjective than scientific," with large uncertainties and uneven analyst training. Read it directly rather than through summaries.
  • President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), Forensic Science in Criminal Courts: Ensuring Scientific Validity of Feature-Comparison Methods (2016). Frames the "foundational validity / known error rate / black-box study" standard this chapter applies to BPA's event-level claims. Even where BPA is not its primary target, the standard it sets is the yardstick of §10.6.
  • Scientific Working Group / OSAC materials on bloodstain pattern analysis (e.g., the legacy SWGSTAIN terminology and the Organization of Scientific Area Committees, NIST). Useful for the defensible vocabulary of §10.4–10.5 (directionality, impact angle, area of convergence/origin) and for seeing how the field itself is trying to standardize. (Confirm the current OSAC subcommittee and document titles before citing specifics.)
  • The trial record of People v. Simpson (Los Angeles, 1995). For §10.3 and Case Study 10.1: the most documented public example of strong DNA chemistry undermined by collection, handling, contamination, and chain-of-custody attacks. Extensive primary and journalistic records exist; rely on the documented testimony rather than dramatizations.
  • The litigation record of the David Camm prosecutions (Indiana, 2000s–2013). For §10.6 and Case Study 10.2: the emblematic instance of qualified BPA experts reaching opposite conclusions on the same stains across three trials. Court records and appellate opinions are the authoritative sources.
  • Landmark admissibility decisionsDaubert v. Merrell Dow (1993), Frye v. United States (1923), Kumho Tire v. Carmichael (1999) (Chapter 5). These govern whether contested BPA testimony reaches a jury and on what terms; §10.6's courtroom guidance assumes them.
  • The Innocence Project case record. For the broader pattern of pattern-evidence overreach into which BPA's event-level disputes fit; useful background for Theme 2 across Part III as well.

Tier 2 — Attributed, specifics to verify

  • General forensic-science and criminalistics textbooks' chapters on serology and bloodstain pattern analysis. Standard introductory texts cover the heme/peroxidase basis of presumptive tests, the Kastle-Meyer and luminol procedures, the Takayama/Teichmann confirmatory crystal tests, the precipitin species test, and the geometry of impact angle and area of origin. Use them for the mechanics of §10.1–10.5, but verify any specific numbers (sensitivities, dilution limits) against a primary source before quoting.
  • Literature on luminol false positives and its effect on downstream DNA. Studies have examined luminol's reactivity with bleach, metal ions, and plant peroxidases, and its potential to degrade DNA. Attribute the phenomena honestly (as §10.2 does) without inventing a precise citation; consult validation studies for exact conditions.
  • Studies and commentary on BPA reliability and analyst agreement. Work examining inter-analyst agreement, the effect of contextual information on BPA conclusions, and the limits of area-of-origin reconstruction (including the parabolic-path correction) supports §10.5–10.6. Several proficiency and error-rate studies exist; check the specific design and findings before citing a number, per the book's statistical-honesty rule.
  • Acid phosphatase / p30 (PSA) and amylase testing literature for the non-blood body-fluid screens mentioned in §10.1. Verify specific reagents and cutoffs against current laboratory methods.

Tier 3 — Illustrative / constructed (this book)

  • The Mill Creek cold case (the doorframe stain, the low spatter pattern, and Figure 10.3) — constructed teaching material, labeled throughout. See the running case in _continuity.md and Appendix I (the Cold-Case Workbook).
  • Figure 10.3 ("The stain by the doorframe") and the schematic ASCII diagrams of the serology funnel, single-stain geometry, and the stringing/area-of-origin method — all constructed for instruction and explicitly not to scale.
  • The illustrative stain measurements used in the angle-of-impact worked examples (e.g., 4 mm × 8 mm) and the exercises — round teaching numbers, labeled as illustrative, not data from a real case.

A reading strategy for this chapter. Start with the NAS 2009 BPA section (Tier 1) to calibrate your skepticism, then read a standard textbook treatment (Tier 2) for the mechanics, then return to the Camm and Simpson records (Tier 1) to see the two halves of the chapter — interpretation and collection — fail in the real world. Always prefer the primary court record or the report itself over a secondhand summary; this chapter's entire argument is that confident retellings outrun the underlying evidence.
