Content Note

This textbook examines human attraction, courtship, desire, and intimacy from scientific and critical perspectives. In doing so, it engages with topics that some readers may find challenging or activating.

Specific content warnings:

  • Chapter 30 (Manipulation and Coercion) discusses psychological manipulation, coercive control, and the boundary between persuasion and abuse
  • Chapter 31 (Objectification and the Male Gaze) discusses sexual objectification, the male gaze, and related harms to women and marginalized groups
  • Chapter 32 (Rejection, Harassment, and Violence) discusses street harassment, stalking, incel ideology, and intimate partner violence, including statistics on sexual violence
  • Chapter 33 (Technology and Harm) discusses non-consensual image sharing (revenge porn), catfishing, and algorithmic discrimination
  • Part V broadly (Chapters 23–28) discusses race, gender, sexuality, and class-based discrimination in romantic and sexual contexts

Throughout the book, discussions of sexuality and desire are handled with respect for diverse orientations and identities. The book assumes no single form of attraction, relationship structure, or gender identity as default.

If you are currently experiencing or have experienced harassment, coercion, or intimate partner violence, campus resources are available. Many campuses offer counseling, victim advocacy, and emergency support — your student services office can direct you to local resources.

Instructors: We recommend reviewing Chapters 30–33 in advance of assigning them and making relevant campus support resources visible to students.
