The chance of winning $2^40 ($1 trillion) instead of $2^30 ($1 billion) is irrelevant — you can't spend $1 trillion in a human lifetime. Your utility function tops out, even if the dollar amounts don't.
The St. Petersburg Paradox demonstrates that expected value in dollars is not always the right objective function.
