Teaching notes
What this chapter is actually for
Chapter 5 taught students how to evaluate evidence. Chapter 6 teaches them why that skill keeps failing them anyway — and the crucial move is that the failure is environmental rather than personal.
If students leave believing "people who fall for peptide hype are gullible," the chapter has failed and will actively harm their practice. §6.9 exists to prevent exactly that conclusion, and it names the traits of the susceptible reader as virtues: curiosity, willingness to read primary sources, institutional skepticism, mechanistic knowledge. Every one is something we are trying to cultivate in the room.
The line that must land: understanding how something would work makes it feel more likely to work, and knowing that does not switch it off. Only procedure helps.
Common misconceptions
"So the vendors are lying." Mostly they are not, and this matters more than it sounds. A student who thinks the problem is dishonesty will look for dishonesty, fail to find it, and conclude the critique was overblown. The problem is that nobody has to lie. Epistemic laundering is the concept to spend time on.
"Testimonials are just weak evidence." They are close to uninformative for efficacy, and the five mechanisms are separable. Students often accept the conclusion and cannot reproduce the reasoning, which means they cannot explain it to anyone else — which is the actual skill.
"The mainstream position is right, so dismissive coverage is fine." The most important misconception to break, especially in clinical students. §6.5 argues that the menace register does specific damage, and it is worth being blunt: contempt reliably hands a reader to someone with worse information and better manners. Clinicians who learn this in a classroom rather than in a failed consultation are ahead.
"This chapter is anti-supplement / anti-biohacking." It isn't, and the three cases in §6.8 are constructed to prevent that reading — each begins with what is genuinely true. If a student's summary of the chapter contains no true things about NAD+, they have read it as a debunking.
"The skeptical position is bias-free." §6.7's admission that this book has its own biases exists for this. Ask students what a rigor-preference that has shaded into excessive conservatism would look like from inside. (It looks like scrupulousness.)
The hardest point to teach
That the failure mode operates on the students in the room, including the best ones.
Students readily accept that other people are susceptible. The move from "this explains my uncle" to "this explains me" is genuinely difficult and cannot be achieved by assertion.
What works: exercise 6.35, run live. Have students pick a compound they are interested in — not one you assign — and run the sixty-second protocol on the first source they find. Then have them do it on a compound they are skeptical of. The asymmetry in how hard they look is the lesson, and they discover it themselves rather than being told.
Demonstrations that work
The double search. Project a general web search for a compound and a PubMed search with the "Randomized Controlled Trial" filter, side by side. Do it live. The gap between the two screens is the entire chapter and takes ninety seconds to produce.
The limitations paragraph. Pull up any preclinical paper on any compound. Scroll to the last paragraph of the discussion. Read it aloud. Then read the corresponding sentence from a consumer page about the same finding. This is the single most effective demonstration in the chapter and it requires no preparation beyond picking a compound.
The four vials, physically. Four identical unlabeled containers of anything white and powdered. Set them on the desk. Ask students to identify which is which. Then ask what knowledge would help — and let them work out that everything in Chapters 1 through 4 is silent on the question. Students report remembering this for years.
The incentive diagram, built live. Draw the pipeline and ask the room who benefits at each stage. Then ask the closing question: who benefits from "we don't know yet"? The silence is the point.

§6.8's three cases work better as reading than as lecture; assign them and discuss next session.
Assessment notes
Discriminating items: 6.8, 6.13, 6.19, 6.22, 6.24, 6.31.
6.22 (analyze a fourth compound yourself) is the best summative item in the chapter. The common failure is stopping at "there's no evidence" — which is a conclusion, not an analysis. Require that the answer state what is genuinely true first. An answer that cannot do this has not done the work and, more practically, would not persuade anyone who believes the claim.
6.30 (is the book's admission of its own bias credible or performative?) is worth grading generously in both directions. A student who argues it is performative and explains what would distinguish them has understood the chapter better than one who accepts it gratefully.
6.33 (Field 12, dated, unrevised) — collect the date. It is called back in Chapter 40.
