In 1912, Alfred Wegener — a German meteorologist and polar explorer — proposed that the continents had once been joined in a single landmass and had drifted apart over millions of years. His evidence included:
- The jigsaw-puzzle fit of the South American and African coastlines
- Identical fossil species found on continents now separated by oceans
- Matching geological formations on both sides of the Atlantic

One of the most concrete ways to detect an authority cascade is to trace the citation network behind a consensus claim.
In a healthy consensus, the citation network looks like a web: multiple independent research groups have arrived at similar conclusions through different methods, and they cite each other's work alongside their own original data. The network is wide — many independent roots.
In an authority cascade, the citation network looks like a tree: a single original source (or a small cluster) is cited by many subsequent papers, which are then cited by even more papers, and so on. The network is deep but narrow — many citations, but all tracing back to one or a few roots.

2.10 Active Right Now: Where Authority Cascades May Be Operating
The historical examples are safe to analyze because the cascades have been resolved. But authority cascades are structural — they don't stop operating because we've named them. Here are areas where the mechanism may be active now:
Climate science communication. This is a complex case because the scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change is genuine and well-supported by independent evidence — it is not an authority cascade. However, the communication of climate science sometimes exhibits cascade dynamics: specific policy prescriptions are presented with the same authority as the underlying science, and dissent about policy (which is legitimate) is conflated with dissent about the science (which is not). The authority of science is borrowed to support policy positions that require their own justification.
AI capabilities assessment. Prominent AI researchers and company leaders make predictions about AI capabilities that shape investment, regulation, and public perception. The prestige of AI labs (and the difficulty of independent evaluation) means these predictions are amplified through a citation-like process without adequate independent verification. When Demis Hassabis or Sam Altman makes a prediction about AI timelines, it carries weight proportional to their prestige, not proportional to the evidence.
Medical guidelines in areas with weak evidence. In many areas of medicine, clinical guidelines are based on expert consensus rather than strong RCT evidence. This is sometimes necessary (you can't randomize everything), but it creates conditions for authority cascades: the guidelines reflect the views of the most prestigious committee members, junior clinicians defer to the guidelines, and challenging them carries professional risk.
The point is not that these fields are necessarily wrong. The point is that the structural conditions for authority cascades are present, and that means heightened vigilance is warranted.
Understanding authority cascades does not mean rejecting all hierarchy. Most hierarchies of expertise are genuinely useful. The practical question is: How do you work within an authority hierarchy while maintaining the ability to notice when it's wrong?

Distinguish prestige from evidence. When encountering a strong consensus, ask: "Is this supported by independent replication or by authoritative assertion?" The question is not disrespectful — it's the foundation of scientific thinking.

Teach the history of error. Most training programs teach the current consensus as settled fact, omitting the history of how that consensus was reached (and what it replaced). Including the history of correction — the messy, contested, often cruel process by which fields changed their minds — inoculates students against the assumption that the current consensus is necessarily correct.

Before we leave the authority cascade, we need to confront an uncomfortable philosophical question that some readers may be thinking: Isn't ALL knowledge ultimately based on authority?
After all, you didn't personally verify that the Earth orbits the Sun. You didn't replicate the experiments demonstrating that atoms exist. You trust these claims because authoritative sources — scientists, textbooks, institutions — told you they were true. If all knowledge relies on some degree of authority, how can the authority cascade be a failure mode?
The answer involves a distinction that is easy to state and hard to apply: the difference between justified trust and unjustified deference.
Justified trust in authority rests on: - The authority has been independently verified by multiple parties - The authority's methods are transparent and reproducible - There exists a mechanism for the authority to be corrected - The authority has a track record of updating when evidence demands it - Dissenting voices are engaged with substantively
Unjustified deference occurs when: - The authority's claim has been cited but not independently verified - The authority's methods are opaque or non-reproducible - No practical mechanism exists for correction - The authority has a track record of resisting correction - Dissenting voices are marginalized rather than engaged
Most knowledge you rely on daily falls on the "justified trust" side: modern physics, germ theory, the structure of DNA — these have been independently verified by thousands of researchers across decades. The authority cascade becomes a failure mode when the verification step is skipped and citation replaces replication.
This is why the citation network analysis (section 2.9) is so valuable as a diagnostic tool. It doesn't require you to personally verify every claim. It requires you to ask: Has this claim been independently verified by someone other than the original authority and their intellectual descendants? If yes, it's probably justified trust. If no, proceed with appropriate caution.
