Why WOOP Works
WOOP's effectiveness comes from the combination of two evidence-based mechanisms:
1. Mental contrasting creates a "necessity to act" signal. By contrasting the desired outcome with the current reality, the brain registers the gap — which motivates action to close it. Pure positive fantasy doesn't create this gap because it simulates having already achieved the goal.
2. Implementation intentions (the "Plan" in WOOP) create pre-programmed responses to obstacles. "If I feel too tired to exercise, then I will put on my shoes and walk for 5 minutes" bypasses the decision point where people typically give up.

The WOOP Process in Detail
Step 1: Wish. Choose a goal that is challenging but feasible. Not "become a billionaire by next week" (unrealistic) or "brush my teeth" (too easy). Something in the achievable-but-requires-effort range.
Step 2: Outcome. Imagine the best outcome of achieving the wish. What would it feel like? What would change? Allow yourself to experience the positive emotions. (This is the one step that overlaps with manifesting.)
Step 3: Obstacle. Now identify the main internal obstacle — the thing within you (a habit, a fear, an impulse, a competing commitment) that stands between you and the outcome. Be specific.
Step 4: Plan. Form an implementation intention: "If [obstacle occurs], then I will [specific action]." This pre-programs your response so that when the obstacle appears, you don't have to deliberate — you execute the plan.
The Key Difference
Manifesting says: "Imagine your success intensely enough and the universe will deliver it." WOOP says: "Imagine your success, honestly identify what's in your way, and make a specific plan for when you encounter the obstacle."
The first is magical thinking. The second is evidence-based behavior change. And the second actually works.
