The message is demonstrably misleading, the targeting is designed to prevent scrutiny from those who might correct it, and the effect sought depends on suppressing rather than engaging critical reasoning.

A manufactured example: astroturfing campaigns in which political consulting firms manage networks of apparently independent social media accounts to create the appearance of grassroots enthusiasm for a candidate or position. The Russian Internet Research Agency's operation during the 2016 U.S. election created thousands of fake accounts representing American political identities, each generating content designed to make specific political positions appear to have broader organic support than they actually possessed.

The manipulation lies in the implied scope of the expertise: a cardiologist's credentials do not transfer to naturopathic supplementation; a physician's general standing does not substitute for the randomized controlled trial evidence that would be required to support the specific efficacy claim. The audience, however, reasonably infers that a person with medical training would not endorse a product they believed to be ineffective, and that their endorsement therefore reflects clinical evidence.

In the post-exposure phase, collect truth ratings for both groups. If the illusory truth effect is operating, the experimental group's truth ratings will be measurably higher than the control group's, and the magnitude of the increase will predict the number of exposures.

Roland Barthes would identify the completed system — the symbol as it functions in context — as "myth": a second-order semiological system in which contingent historical meaning presents itself as natural and inevitable.

This intimacy lowers critical processing: listeners are receiving a voice, not evaluating an argument. The absence of a visual counterpart means that the listener fills in the speaker's presence imaginatively, typically in ways favorable to the speaker's apparent authority and sincerity.

Father Coughlin's radio broadcasts in the 1930s exemplify these advantages. Reaching an estimated 30 million listeners per week at his peak, Coughlin's appeal was inseparable from his voice's qualities — warmth, confidence, conviction — which created a parasocial intimacy that print could not replicate. His anti-Semitic and authoritarian arguments were not analytically stronger than those in print circulation; their persuasive force derived substantially from the channel.
