When Copilot Was Making Him Worse

Background
Raj had been using GitHub Copilot and similar AI code generation tools for nearly two years. He was enthusiastic about them — genuinely, not just performatively. The productivity gains were real. He shipped faster. He spent less time on boilerplate. He got useful suggestions for patterns he would have had to look up. For the breadth of his day-to-day development work, AI assistance was a clear net positive.
He was also moving into a team lead role, which meant more time on system design, architecture decisions, code review, and mentoring junior developers. Less time on direct implementation.
He did not immediately notice the problem. But it surfaced during a technical interview.
The Interview That Revealed the Gap
A former colleague asked Raj to help him informally prepare for senior engineer interviews at a major tech company. He asked Raj to walk him through a whiteboard-style algorithm problem — a dynamic programming problem, the kind of thing that appears regularly in technical interviews for senior roles.
Raj worked through it. He was slower than he expected. He found himself reaching for debugging instincts that weren't quite there. The patterns he needed — the specific DP formulation, the memoization approach — were in his head as concepts, but the fluency of implementation had dulled. He got there eventually, but it took three times as long as he would have expected based on his self-assessment.
He didn't say anything to his colleague about what he had noticed. But he was honest with himself afterward about what had happened.
The Diagnosis
Raj is an analytical person. He didn't catastrophize, but he did think carefully about what had happened.
Two years ago, he implemented algorithms regularly, without assistance. The implementation fluency was high. He would have worked through that dynamic programming problem in a quarter of the time, and with more confidence.
Since then, he had used AI tools for code implementation extensively. When he encountered a DP problem in his actual work, Copilot would suggest the structure, he would review and adjust, and they would proceed. He was reviewing AI code far more than he was writing code from scratch.
The skill had not disappeared — he still had the conceptual knowledge and the eventual ability to solve the problem. But the implementation fluency — the quick pattern access, the confident translation of algorithm to code — had degraded from lack of exercise. This was not mysterious: it was exactly what use-it-or-lose-it predicts.
The specific area of atrophy was the kind of reasoning he needed not just for interviews, but for the architecture work that was increasingly central to his role. Designing robust systems required implementation fluency as a foundation for design judgment. He could feel the gap there too, if he was honest.
What He Did About It
Raj did not conclude that he should abandon AI tools. He concluded that he needed to create explicit AI-free zones for skill maintenance, the way a competitive athlete maintains fitness in areas that aren't directly used in competition.
He designed a three-part response:
1. Weekly algorithm practice without AI assistance.
He committed to one hour per week of algorithm problems solved entirely without Copilot or any other AI code assistance. He used LeetCode and AlgoExpert for the problem set. The rule was strict: no AI for the coding itself. He could use documentation for standard library functions; he could not use AI code generation or completion.
The first few sessions were uncomfortable. He was slower than his self-image. He made mistakes he wouldn't have made two years ago. This was informative — not demoralizing, but diagnostic. The gap was real. It needed practice, not concealment.
After six weeks, the fluency had substantially returned. After twelve weeks, he was back near his previous performance level. The atrophy had been reversible, but it required intentional, consistent AI-free practice to reverse.
2. First-pass implementation on critical architectural components.
For new features or systems he was building that involved novel architectural decisions — not boilerplate, but genuine design work — he committed to writing the first implementation pass himself, without AI assistance. He could then use AI to review, suggest improvements, and catch edge cases. But the first version was his.
This practice served two purposes: it kept implementation fluency connected to design judgment, and it kept him genuinely informed about what he was building rather than reviewing AI output for acceptability.
3. Explicit mentoring constraint.
When mentoring junior developers, Raj realized he had been suggesting they use Copilot for problems that would be more valuable to work through themselves. He reversed this: for learning exercises, he explicitly created AI-free constraints for the developers he was mentoring, and he explained why.
The conversation with one mentee was instructive:
"Why can't we use Copilot for this?"
"Because the point of this exercise is for you to develop the skill. Copilot would complete the exercise; it wouldn't complete your development. We're going to work through it the slow way, and the slow way is actually the fast way for what we're trying to build."
The Broader Recognition
Working through this experience, Raj recognized a broader pattern he had been in denial about.
He had been telling himself that his AI use was all additive — that it was making him better at everything by removing friction and handling the tedious parts. The more honest accounting was that some of what he had delegated to AI was not tedious; it was important. It was practice. It was the work through which he maintained and developed skills that his role required.
He thought about the skills he was still maintaining through regular practice and the skills he had been largely delegating. The list of delegated skills was longer and more consequential than he had acknowledged.
He wrote a document for himself — not a public commitment, just a personal audit — listing his current AI use patterns and categorizing each as: (a) genuinely additive, AI handles what was tedious without reducing my capability; (b) skill-maintaining AI-assisted, I'm still practicing the skill but AI makes it more efficient; or (c) skill-atrophying, I've largely stopped practicing this skill because AI handles it.
The category (c) list was shorter than he feared but longer than he was comfortable with. He addressed each item either by adding it to his AI-free practice zones or by explicitly deciding that the skill was not one he needed to maintain at high fluency.
The act of making the audit explicit — writing it down, being honest about the category (c) items — was the most useful part of the process. The problem was not the AI use itself; it was the lack of honest accounting about what the AI use was costing.
The Interview Outcome
He had not been interviewing. The whiteboard session with his colleague was informal preparation for someone else. But the experience prompted him to think about what would happen if he did interview for a senior role.
He was not in a crisis. He had addressed the gap. But the experience made clear to him that AI tool use creates invisible gaps when it is not accompanied by deliberate skill maintenance — and that those gaps are most visible in exactly the contexts where you most want to perform well: high-stakes evaluations of your actual capability.
What Raj Would Tell Other Developers
When mentoring, Raj now has a specific conversation about AI tools with every developer he works with. The core of that conversation:
"Use AI tools. They're genuinely valuable. But be honest with yourself about which of your skills you're still practicing and which you've delegated. The ones you've delegated are going to atrophy. Some of that is fine — you don't need every skill at the same fluency. But some of those skills are the foundation for the work you want to do. Identify them and protect them. Create AI-free zones for the things you need to stay sharp on. Otherwise you'll discover the gaps at the worst possible time."
Lessons
1. Skill atrophy from AI use is real and follows predictable mechanisms. Skills require practice. Consistent delegation to AI tools reduces practice. The skill degrades. This is not a hypothesis — it is well-established cognitive science applied to a new context.
2. The gap often isn't visible until you need the skill in an AI-unavailable context. AI assistance masks capability gaps during normal operation. High-stakes situations — interviews, live debugging under pressure, novel problems without precedent — reveal the gaps.
3. The fix is structured AI-free practice, not abandoning AI tools. Raj kept using Copilot. He added a practice protocol. The question is not AI or no AI — it is whether AI-free practice for key skills is explicitly designed into your routine.
4. The skill audit is the most valuable first step. Categorizing your current AI use as additive, skill-maintaining, or skill-atrophying gives you an honest map of where your capability is and where it's drifting. Most practitioners haven't done this audit. It takes about thirty minutes and reveals things worth knowing.
5. Teaching others about AI-free learning zones reinforces your own practice. Raj found that explaining the principle to junior developers — and designing AI-free exercises for them — made him more consistent about his own AI-free practice zones. Teaching is a powerful learning reinforcement.
