The Central Tension

Raj describes his AI practice two years in with a phrase that captures the central tension he's navigated: "being good at using AI without becoming dependent on it."

For a software engineer, this tension is particularly acute. AI coding assistants have become genuinely capable at producing functional code. A developer who uses them effectively can produce working code faster than without them. And a developer who becomes dependent on them — who can't reason through a problem without AI's help — has traded a skill that took years to develop for a tool that might not always be available.

Raj has spent two years thinking carefully about how to use AI coding tools in a way that accelerates his work without atrophying his engineering fundamentals.

Where He Started

When AI coding assistants first became capable enough to be practically useful, Raj approached them the way he approaches any new tool: with deliberate experimentation and high skepticism.

His first systematic evaluation — what became the capability testing battery described in Chapter 40's case study — gave him a calibrated view of what the tools were actually good at. The results were more nuanced than the hype suggested: excellent on standard implementation tasks, variable on complex logic, unreliable on security, and surprisingly poor at explaining existing code.

He started with a clear rule: AI could write code, but he had to understand every line it wrote. If he couldn't explain what a function did and why it was implemented that way, he wouldn't submit it. This rule felt slightly paranoid at the beginning. Two years later, it's the most important element of his AI practice.

The Year One Experiments

Raj ran his AI integration as a series of experiments with defined success criteria.

Experiment 1: Standard implementation. He used AI for all standard function implementation — the work that's clearly specified and well-precedented. The hypothesis: AI can handle this faster and at equivalent quality, freeing me for harder problems.

Result: Confirmed, with important caveats. AI was faster on standard work. Quality was equivalent on happy paths and lower on edge cases. He added an edge-case-specific review step to compensate. Net result: faster and equivalent quality after adjustment.

Experiment 2: Architecture and design. He tried using AI for early-stage architectural discussions — describing a system design problem and asking AI for options.

Result: Mixed. AI generated many options, most of which were reasonable but none of which were particularly insightful given the specific constraints of his systems. He found the exercise useful for generating options to react against (a brainstorming function), but AI's architectural suggestions required significant critical evaluation and were more often starting points for his thinking than conclusions.

He settled on a model: AI for option generation, him for option evaluation and selection.

Experiment 3: Debugging. He tried using AI as a debugging partner — describing failing behavior and asking for diagnostic hypotheses.

Result: Surprisingly useful. AI was good at suggesting common failure modes and generating hypotheses for him to evaluate. It wasn't reliably right — he still had to verify each hypothesis — but it was faster than generating hypotheses entirely independently. The interaction pattern he settled on: describe the symptom, ask for five hypotheses ranked by likelihood, evaluate each.

Experiment 4: Code review. He tried using AI to pre-review his code before submitting pull requests.

Result: Useful for a specific function: catching obvious issues (typos, logic errors in simple constructs, missing null checks). Less useful for subtler issues — design problems, performance implications of architectural choices, security considerations that required understanding the broader system context.

He settled on AI pre-review for simple syntactic and obvious logical issues, and human review for everything that required system-level understanding.

The Development Question

A year into his AI practice, Raj had a conversation with a junior developer on his team that changed how he thought about AI and professional development.

The junior developer — Maya, two years out of university — had been using AI coding assistants heavily since joining. She was producing code that passed review and seemed competent. But Raj noticed something when he gave her a debugging assignment on a production issue: she struggled more than he expected. She kept reaching for AI to generate hypotheses rather than reasoning through the problem systematically.

When Raj asked about her debugging process, she described going to AI first, always. "It's usually faster," she said.

Algorithm design. When designing new algorithms or data structures, he did the design work independently before using AI to check his work or suggest improvements. AI was a verifier, not a designer.

System architecture. Major architectural decisions were made independently, with AI used as a sounding board and option generator but never as the decision-maker.

For his team: he established explicit "no AI" sessions — one per sprint — where developers worked on hard problems together, without AI assistance. These sessions became among the most valuable team learning events. The shared struggle produced shared understanding.

The Trust Calibration That Emerged

Over two years, Raj developed a precise trust calibration for AI coding tools — not a single trust level but a task-specific map.

High trust (verify only edge cases): - Standard implementations of well-established patterns - Boilerplate code generation - Simple utility functions - Code formatting and style

Medium trust (verify thoroughly, especially edge cases and error handling): - Complex algorithms - Data processing functions - API integrations - Performance-sensitive code

This map is the product of two years of interaction — of seeing where AI was right, where it was wrong, and what the consequences were. Raj updates it quarterly based on new observations.

The Practice He Has Now

Two years in, Raj's engineering practice is what he describes as "AI-integrated without being AI-dependent."

He uses AI coding tools daily. He's faster on most tasks than he was two years ago. His code quality, measured through his team's metrics, is consistently high.

He can also work without AI. He debugs hard problems without it. He designs complex systems without it. He maintains the engineering fundamentals that made him a strong developer before AI tools existed.

This independence isn't just about professional security (though that matters). It's about the quality of his AI use. The developer who can reason about problems without AI is the developer who knows whether AI's output makes sense. The developer who can only work with AI has no independent standard to check AI's work against.

"The point is not to be independent of AI," Raj says. "The point is to be so good independently that when I use AI, I know whether it's right."
