Isabel Rodriguez brings professional knowledge to homeownership and keeps discovering its limits. Her story runs through Part 1 as a kind of recurring reminder that book knowledge and building knowledge are not the same thing. Her 1962 split-level is a useful subject: old enough to have idiosyncrasies, complicated enough to reward attention.
Priya Chen and James Williams are in the middle of a renovation when the book begins — which means they're seeing their house literally opened up, walls removed, systems exposed. Priya is a software engineer who approaches home systems the way she approaches code: she wants to understand the logic, not just the procedure. Her house, a 1940s craftsman bungalow outside Portland, is a layer cake of every decade's repair philosophy.
Dave Kowalski lives on twelve acres in rural Wisconsin with a house he's been working on himself for eight years. His relationship with his house is intimate in a way that purely urban or suburban homeowners rarely experience. He has dug around his own foundation. He has replaced his own framing members. When something breaks, calling a contractor can mean a two-hour wait for someone to even drive out. How to Read This Part
Part 1 is the foundation for everything else in the book — literally and structurally. If you're the kind of reader who skips introductory material to get to the "useful" stuff, resist that impulse here. The physical model you build in Chapters 1 through 5 will make every subsequent part faster to understand.
That said, if you already have hands-on construction experience, you'll move through Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 more quickly than someone who has never watched a house being framed. That's fine. Skim what you know. Slow down for what you don't.
One practical suggestion: as you read, keep a specific house in mind — ideally your own. The concepts in Part 1 are easiest to internalize when you're mentally mapping them onto something real. If you can, go look at your foundation before you read Chapter 2. Go find where your exterior walls meet the attic floor before you read Chapter 4. The more concrete your reference point, the more useful these chapters will be.
By the end of Part 1, you'll have a complete mental skeleton of how a house holds itself together. Everything that follows — the water, the electricity, the heat, the roof, the finish work — hangs on that skeleton.
