What the Ceiling Is Trying to Tell You
Priya Chen noticed it on a Sunday morning: a faint brown ring on the ceiling of the upstairs hallway, roughly the size of a dinner plate, with a soft center that yielded slightly when she pressed it. She had walked past that spot every day for six months without registering it. She would have continued walking past it, probably, if the light hadn't caught it differently that morning.
The stain turned out to be the symptom of a slow leak at the supply connection behind the upstairs toilet. The toilet had been rocking slightly — another thing she had noticed and mentally filed as something to deal with eventually — and the movement had worked the supply line fitting loose over time. The water had been seeping, not streaming, and it had found its way along a joist to the drywall below.
The repair cost $180: a new supply line, a wax ring, a couple of screws into the floor flange. The ceiling patch cost another $320 for a drywall contractor to do it properly. The total, just over $500, felt manageable.
"If I'd known what a rocking toilet meant," Priya said, "we could have fixed it for $40 in an afternoon."
This is the nature of interior failures. They announce themselves through their symptoms — stains, soft spots, loose tiles, squeaking floors — before they announce themselves through visible damage. Part 6 is about learning to read those announcements.
The Face of Your Home — and What It Conceals
The interior finishes of your home are the surfaces you spend your life touching: drywall ceilings, wood floors, tile showers, kitchen counters, basement floors. They are also the interfaces between your living space and the systems running behind and below them — the plumbing, the electrical, the structure.
This dual nature is what makes interior knowledge so valuable. A water stain on a ceiling is a cosmetic problem and a diagnostic clue. The repair section covers everything from small nail holes to large patches requiring backing, with attention to the part that most DIY guides underemphasize: texture matching, which is what separates an invisible repair from an obvious one.
The chapter then addresses plaster, which homeowners in older homes deal with on entirely different terms than drywall. Plaster is stronger, heavier, and more complex to repair correctly. It also fails in characteristic ways — key failure at the lath, settlement cracks, bowing — that are worth recognizing.

Chapter 29: Flooring Systems begins below the surface — with subfloors — because nearly every flooring failure originates there. A patched ceiling stain that recurs is not a drywall problem — it is a plumbing or roof problem that has been cosmetically addressed. A repainted bathroom wall with mold returning under the paint is not a paint problem — it is a ventilation or waterproofing problem. Interior repairs that don't address the source of the failure are temporary repairs, and temporary repairs in a house tend to become expensive repairs.

How to Read This Part
Chapters 28 and 29 are foundational — they apply to every room in the house and are worth reading regardless of your immediate concerns. If you have an older home with plaster walls, read Chapter 28's plaster section carefully before attempting any repairs.
Chapters 30 and 31 are best read together if you are planning any work in either room, as both concentrate more systems per square foot than the rest of the house combined, and both have sequencing requirements that affect how projects are planned.
Chapter 32 is essential reading for anyone who owns a home with a basement or crawlspace, even if — especially if — the space seems dry. Moisture problems in below-grade spaces are typically invisible until they are significant.
