This appendix offers guidance and model reasoning for selected exercises. A word on what it is and isn't:
Most exercises in this book are deliberately open-ended. The "Check Your Assumptions," "What Would You Do?," "Cultural Translation," and "Reflection" items have no single correct answer — their value is in the thinking, not a key to match. For those, this appendix describes what a strong response demonstrates rather than supplying "the answer." The more factual "Check Your Understanding" and "Decode This" items can be checked against the chapter; here we model the reasoning.

How to read the recurring exercise types
- Check Your Understanding — Factual recall and explanation. A strong answer restates the concept in your own words and, ideally, gives a fresh example the chapter didn't use. If you can only quote the chapter, you have memorized, not understood.
- Check Your Assumptions — The core skill of the book. A strong answer (1) correctly labels a belief as a WEIRD cultural preference rather than a human universal, and (2) names a coherent culture that would see it differently without judging that culture as wrong. The "aha" is catching your own culture pretending to be common sense.
- Decode This — A strong answer gives both readings: what the signal means through a Western operating system, and what it plausibly means through the relevant Eastern one — and explains why the gap exists (face, high-context, hierarchy). Generating the alternative reading matters more than being certain which is right.
- What Would You Do? — A strong answer doesn't just pick an option; it explains what each option signals inside the other culture's system, and chooses the one that protects face, respects hierarchy, or builds relationship as the situation requires. There is rarely one right move, but there are clearly wrong ones.
- Cultural Translation — A strong answer preserves the information while adjusting the form — softening directness into face-protecting indirectness (or vice versa) — and notices how much relationship-work the indirect version is doing.
Chapter-by-chapter: the key insight your answers should reach
- Ch 1 — You Have a Culture Too. Your "normal" is WEIRD and learned; directness, individualism, and efficiency are cultural choices, not neutral virtues.
- Ch 2 — Collectivism. The group as the basic unit reframes "passive," "controlling," and "conformist" behavior as coherent and often advantageous.
- Ch 3 — Face. Public criticism, the missing direct "no," and stalled negotiations all trace back to protecting social dignity; giving face is the underused move.
- Ch 4 — High-Context Communication. Meaning lives in context and omission; "yes" and silence are not what a low-context reader assumes.
- Ch 5 — Geography of Thought. Holistic perception and long/cyclical time make "it depends" a sophistication, not an evasion.
- Ch 6 — Hierarchy. Hierarchy is reciprocal obligation, not mere subordination; respect to seniors costs nothing and gains much.
- Ch 7 — Family. The extended family as decision-making unit is a strength (safety net, low elder poverty), not immaturity.
- Ch 8 — Communication Without Words. Greetings, eye contact, space, and gesture carry meaning that words don't; the head-wobble is rapport, not yes/no.
- Ch 9 — Food. The meal is relationship infrastructure; refusing food can refuse the host; the third offering is the real one.
- Ch 10 — Gift-Giving. Gifts are reciprocal obligation with culture-specific landmines (clocks, the number 4, the left hand).
- Ch 11 — Religion & Philosophy. Treat traditions as cultural operating systems shaping daily behavior, with equal respect; never single one out.
- Ch 12 — Harmony & Conflict. Conflict goes through intermediaries and face-saving exits; an apology repairs a relationship more than it admits fault.
- Ch 13 — Taboos. The strongest answers separate behavioral taboos (head, feet, left hand) from political/historical third rails to be handled by listening, not opining.
- Ch 14 — Relationship Before Transaction. The relationship is the precondition for the deal, not its reward; "wasted" time is risk management.
- Ch 15 — Meetings & Negotiations. The real decision often predates the meeting (nemawashi); silence can be a tactic.
- Ch 16 — Contracts & Trust. A contract is a snapshot of a relationship, renegotiable; confirm real agreement by read-back and follow-through.
- Ch 17 — Managing. Give face publicly, correct privately, lead clearly; "yes" may mean "I heard you."
- Ch 18 — International Teams. Document explicitly, rotate timezone pain, invite quiet voices respectfully.
- Ch 19 — Hiring & Retention. CV norms differ; modesty can mask strength; loyalty and stability may outrank "autonomy."
- Ch 20 — Gifts or Bribes. Strong answers hold both truths: respect the relationship culture and the compliance line; decline gracefully with a script.
- Ch 21 — Entertaining. The banquet is the boardroom; the host pays; learn the toast and seating order.
- Ch 22 — Friendship. Slow to form, deep once built; "how much do you earn?" can be warmth, not intrusion.
- Ch 23 — Romance & Marriage. Arranged/family-involved partnership deserves respect, not mockery; meet the family with gifts and deference.
- Ch 24 — Children & Education. Hold both the achievement and the cost; education is filial duty and family honor.
- Ch 25 — Holidays. Acknowledge colleagues' festivals, flex schedules, accept invitations with gratitude.
- Ch 26 — Visiting. Cover shoulders/shoes at temples, accept hospitality, learn a few words — effort over accent.
- Ch 27–35 — Culture deep-dives. The strongest answers resist flattening: they name what is specific to China, Japan, Korea, India, the subcontinent, mainland/maritime SE Asia, the Arab world, and Iran/Turkey — and where the shared patterns break.
- Ch 36 — Shrinking World. The patterns are moving targets; the young professional may be more global than their elders.
- Ch 37 — The Eastern Century. Hold the "Asian values" debate from both sides (Lee Kuan Yew and Sen) without triumphalism or panic.
- Ch 38 — Stereotypes & Orientalism. The best answers turn the lens on the book itself: patterns are not laws, and even flattering stereotypes harm.
- Ch 39 — Common Ground. The overlap is bigger than the difference; convergence runs both ways.
- Ch 40 — Cultural Intelligence. A strong final answer assesses your own CQ across drive, knowledge, strategy, and action — and names your next practice.
A note for self-study learners
If you're working alone, the most valuable check is not "did I get it right?" but "can I apply it to a situation the chapter didn't mention?" Use the quizzes for retrieval practice (answer before peeking), and treat every real cross-cultural moment in your week as the true exam.
