Appendix I — The Cultural Intelligence Portfolio
This is the companion project that runs through the entire book. Done well, it leaves you with two things: a 25–35 page practical cultural brief on one specific country that you can carry into a posting, a negotiation, a team, or a marriage — and, more valuably, the transferable skill of cultural analysis itself, which works on any culture you ever meet.
This appendix explains the project, gives you the template, and lists what each chapter adds.
What it is
Pick one Eastern culture you actually deal with or expect to — somewhere you have colleagues, clients, in-laws, or a trip booked. As you read, you build a living document about that culture, adding one layer per chapter using that chapter's frameworks. By Chapter 40 you have a structured, personal, genuinely useful brief — far better than anything you could buy, because it is built around your situation and your questions.
Why build it (rather than just read)
- Active beats passive. Writing a thing forces the understanding that reading alone never quite delivers.
- Specific beats general. A brief on your culture, for your purpose, is worth more than a shelf of general guides.
- The skill is the point. The brief is the souvenir; the muscle you build — observe, hypothesize, check, revise — is the prize. It transfers to the next culture, and the next.
How to keep it
Anything works: a document, a notebook, a slide deck, a wiki page. Give it sections (below) and add to them as you read. Date your entries — watching your own understanding deepen is part of the reward, and re-reading your Chapter 1 assumptions at Chapter 40 is genuinely illuminating.
The template
Build these sections over the course of the book. (The chapter that primarily feeds each section is noted; many chapters touch several.)
- My Starting Assumptions — what you believed before you began, and where it came from. (Ch. 1; revisited Ch. 38, 40)
- The Operating System — this culture's stance on the group vs. the individual, face, directness, hierarchy, and time. (Ch. 2–6)
- The Communication Field Guide — how "yes," "no," silence, and the body actually work here; phrases decoded. (Ch. 4, 8, 12)
- The Relationships Map — family structure, friendship, and how trust is built. (Ch. 7, 22, 23)
- The Table and the Gift — dining etiquette, hospitality, gift do's and don'ts. (Ch. 9, 10, 21)
- The Invisible Architecture — the religious/philosophical background and the festivals that mark the year. (Ch. 11, 25)
- The Taboo List — the things you must not do, and the topics you must not raise. (Ch. 13)
- The Business Brief — how to start a relationship, run a meeting, negotiate, manage, and read a contract here. (Ch. 14–21)
- The Country Deep Dive — everything specific to your chosen culture, drawn from its dedicated chapter. (Ch. 27–35)
- My Action Plan — concrete do's, scripts, and reminders for your specific upcoming situation. (All; finalized Ch. 40)
- My CQ Journal — running notes on real cross-cultural moments you experience, analyzed with the book's tools.
What each chapter adds (the 40 prompts)
Each chapter ends with a Portfolio Prompt. Here is the layer each one contributes, so you can see the whole arc and catch up on any you skipped.
Part I — The Cultural Lens - Ch. 1 — Record your starting assumptions and which may be "WEIRD." - Ch. 2 — Where does your culture sit on the individual↔group spectrum, and what follows from it? - Ch. 3 — How is face gained, lost, and given here? Note three concrete examples. - Ch. 4 — Start a "phrases decoded" list: soft refusals, real meanings of "yes," uses of silence. - Ch. 5 — How does this culture think about time, patience, and the long view?
Part II — Shared Patterns - Ch. 6 — Map the hierarchy: who defers to whom, and how it's shown physically. - Ch. 7 — Sketch the family structure and how far it reaches into "personal" decisions. - Ch. 8 — Build a nonverbal field guide: greeting, eye contact, space, key gestures. - Ch. 9 — Record the dining rules and the hospitality imperative. - Ch. 10 — Write the gift do's and don'ts for this culture. - Ch. 11 — Note the religious/philosophical background and its daily practical effects. - Ch. 12 — How is conflict handled here? Who mediates, and how are apologies made? - Ch. 13 — Draft your taboo list — behavioral, political, and historical.
Part III — Business Across Cultures - Ch. 14 — How is a business relationship started and trust built here? - Ch. 15 — How do meetings and negotiations actually run? Where is the real decision made? - Ch. 16 — What does "yes" mean here, and how will you confirm real agreement? - Ch. 17 — How should you manage — or be managed — in this culture? - Ch. 18 — Set your team's communication norms (email, video, documentation, timezones). - Ch. 19 — Note hiring, CV, and retention differences relevant to you. - Ch. 20 — Write your gift/hospitality compliance line for this culture. - Ch. 21 — Plan a business meal here: who hosts, who pays, what happens.
Part IV — Social and Personal Life - Ch. 22 — How do friendships form, and how will you build real ones? - Ch. 23 — Note romance/marriage norms and how to meet a family respectfully. - Ch. 24 — Understand the education world and its pressures (vital if children are involved). - Ch. 25 — Mark the festivals that matter and how to honor them. - Ch. 26 — Build your visitor's checklist: temples, transport, bargaining, hospitality.
Part V — Culture-Specific Deep Dives - Ch. 27–35 — Complete the Country Deep Dive section from your culture's dedicated chapter. This is the heart of the brief; spend real time here.
Part VI — The Future of East-West Relations - Ch. 36 — Note how this culture's younger generation differs from its elders. - Ch. 37 — Record this culture's trajectory and global role, and what it means for you. - Ch. 38 — Audit your brief for stereotypes; flag every generalization that needs a "but it varies." - Ch. 39 — List the common ground you share, to build on. - Ch. 40 — Finalize your Action Plan and assess your own CQ across drive, knowledge, strategy, and action.

Fill it in for one culture and you have done more genuine cross-cultural preparation than most people do in a career. Then — and this is the real lesson of the whole book — do it again for the next culture, and notice how much faster it goes the second time. That speed is cultural intelligence. You built it yourself.
