Chapter 30 — Exercises
These exercises train the one India skill that outranks all others: refusing the single story. Most of them will push you to replace a flat generalization ("Indians do X") with a specific, located, accurate picture ("this India, in this context, tends toward X — and here's where that breaks down"). Work them with a pen, and notice every time you reach for "Indians are…" — that reach is the thing this chapter is trying to retrain.

Part A — Check Your Understanding
Short answers in your own words. If you can't answer one, reread the matching section before moving on.
- The chapter insists India is "a civilization, not a country." Give two concrete facts (from languages, religion, or region) that justify the distinction, and explain what it changes about how you should generalize.
- Define dharma, and explain how its role-specific nature differs from the Western instinct that a moral rule must be universal to be valid.
- Distinguish varna from jati, and explain what the Constitution of 1950 did about caste.
- Why does the chapter call "yes" "the most dangerous word on the subcontinent"? List at least three things a fluent Indian "yes" might actually mean.
- What is the head-wobble not, and what is it? Why does trying to map it onto yes/no fail?
- Define jugaad in one sentence, and name one strength and one point of friction it can create with a Western partner.
- Explain the difference between a colleague in Chennai, a recently-arrived NRI in London, and a second-generation Indian-American — and why treating them as interchangeable is a mistake.
Part B — Check Your Assumptions
For each statement below, decide whether it is true of all India, true of some India (specify which), or a Western projection that misreads the situation. Write one sentence of justification for each.
- "Indians speak Hindi."
- "An Indian colleague who says 'yes, no problem' has committed to the deadline."
- "Caste determines an Indian professional's daily working life."
- "An Indian engineer who consults their parents about a job offer is being immature."
- "The head-wobble means 'yes.'"
- "Indian organizations are deferential and conflict-avoidant, like Japanese ones."
- "Because my Bengaluru team works in fluent English and does daily stand-ups, their communication style is basically Western."
The point of this exercise is that almost every confident sentence about "India" is true of one slice and false of others. The skill is not memorizing the right answer — it's developing the reflex to ask which India? before you finish the sentence.
Part C — Decode This
Each item is a real cross-cultural moment with an Indian colleague. Write (a) what a Western reader probably assumes it means, and (b) a more accurate reading using this chapter's concepts.
- You ask, "Can this be done by Friday?" and get a warm head-wobble and "Yes, yes, we'll try our best." On Friday it isn't done, and your colleague seems puzzled that you're surprised.
- A serious bug derails the release. Your lead engineer says, calmly, "What to do. It is like this only. We will see," and you're alarmed by his apparent lack of urgency.
- A new colleague from Mumbai mentions, with visible warmth, that her family is helping arrange her marriage, and watches your face.
- In a peer design review, two of your Indian engineers argue a technical point loudly and at length, with real heat — and then go to lunch together, entirely cheerful.
- You casually ask a colleague "what's your background?" hoping to learn where in India she's from, and she gives a slightly cool, minimal answer.
Part D — What Would You Do?
Real situations, each with several responses. There is no single "correct" answer — for each, pick the response closest to your instinct, then write why a culturally intelligent person might choose differently.
1. The soft commitment. Your Bengaluru team "commits" to a launch date in a group call — head-wobbles, "yes, yes," "no problem from our side" — but your instinct says the real answer is murkier. Do you (a) take the yes and book the client demo; (b) push hard in the group — "Are you SURE? I need a firm commitment"; (c) follow up privately with the lead, ask what the honest risk is and what would help, and have her re-state the plan and date in her own words; (d) silently pad the date a week on your side and say nothing? What does each option do to face, to honesty, and to your actual risk?
2. The caste question. Over a friendly dinner, conversation turns to India's social complexity, and you're genuinely curious about caste. Do you (a) ask your host directly what caste they are; (b) ask whether they "support reservations" to seem engaged; (c) say nothing about it and steer to safer ground; (d) ask an open, non-personal question like "How much does caste come up in daily life in a city like this, in your experience?" and then mostly listen? Which respects the chapter's "inform yourself, then listen" stance — and where's the line between curiosity and intrusion?
3. The regional assumption. You're preparing a welcome gesture for visiting colleagues from Chennai and decide to greet them with a cheerful "Namaste" and a Bollywood playlist, figuring it's all Indian culture. A diaspora friend winces when you describe the plan. Do you (a) go ahead — it's the thought that counts; (b) ask your friend specifically what would land better for Tamil colleagues from the south; (c) drop the cultural gesture entirely to avoid any mistake; (d) ask the colleagues themselves, lightly, what they'd enjoy? What does the wince tell you about the difference between "Indian" and "from one specific part of India"?
Part E — Cultural Translation
For each question below — the kind a Western manager asks reflexively — write a face-safe how/what version designed to surface the real answer from an Indian colleague without forcing a face-threatening "no." Note what extra information your rewrite is likely to recover.
- "Can you finish this by Friday?"
- "Do you understand the requirements?"
- "Are there any problems with the plan?"
- "Did you agree to the client's terms?"
Notice the pattern in your rewrites: you are converting yes/no questions (which beg a polite "yes") into how, what, walk-me-through questions (which make the truth easy and face-safe to deliver) — and you are confirming by playback rather than by assent.
Part F — Reflection & Extension

The mirror on caste. The chapter's Honesty Box argues that fixating on caste as "India's shameful hierarchy" both flattens India and lets the West off the hook, because every society sorts people by birth-linked advantage. Write a page identifying the birth-linked advantages your own society sorts by (class, race, family connections, inherited wealth, the "right" schools) and how they're dressed in the language of merit. The goal is not to excuse caste but to see it clearly, without moral tourism.

The paradox you can't average. The chapter insists India is "very hierarchical and very argumentative," "English-fluent and high-context" — combinations a Western workplace rarely produces. Pick one of these paradoxes and write about a time you (or someone you know) tried to "average" it to the middle — assuming, say, that fluent English meant Western-style bluntness — and what went wrong. What would holding both sides at once have changed?
✍️ Portfolio Builder. In your India section, build a small table titled "Which India?" List every Indian individual or team you actually work with. For each, fill in what you can responsibly infer: region/state of origin (if known), city vs. smaller-town background, resident-in-India vs. diaspora/NRI, and industry/context. Then add a final column, "What I should NOT assume," and write one specific generalization you'll now stop applying to that person. Revisit this table after Chapter 31 — and notice that "South Asian" is about to splinter even further.
