Where the idea was first named for the West
- Erving Goffman, "On Face-Work" (1955), reprinted in Interaction Ritual (1967). ★★ The foundational social-science treatment of face in English — Goffman defined "face" as the positive social value a person claims in an interaction, and "face-work" as the moves people make to maintain it. Not about Asia specifically, but it gives you the precise vocabulary (saving, giving, threatening face) this chapter rests on. Short and brilliant.
- Penelope Brown & Stephen Levinson, Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage (1987). ★★★ The landmark linguistics theory of "positive" and "negative" face and how politeness strategies protect both, across languages. Dense and academic — dip in for the framework, which underlies why indirect refusals work the way they do.
Face in its home cultures
- Hsien Chin Hu, "The Chinese Concepts of 'Face'" (American Anthropologist, 1944). ★★★ The classic article that introduced the mianzi / lian distinction to Western scholarship — prestige face versus moral face. The original source for the two-part structure that sharpens this whole chapter. Brief and surprisingly readable.
- David Yau-Fai Ho, "On the Concept of Face" (American Journal of Sociology, 1976). ★★★ A careful, much-cited synthesis distinguishing face from related ideas (honor, dignity, status) and arguing for its analytic value. Good if you want rigor under the intuition.
- Erin Meyer, The Culture Map (2014). ★ Not "about" face per se, but her chapters on Evaluating (direct vs. indirect negative feedback), Disagreeing, and Trusting are the most practical, business-ready treatment of face's downstream effects — why criticism goes private, why "no" goes soft. Read alongside this book throughout.
The cultures up close
- Boyé Lafayette De Mente, Japan's Cultural Code Words (2004) / The Chinese Mind (2009) / The Korean Mind (2012). ★ A practical "cultural keyword" series, one volume per culture, with entries on mentsu, mianzi/lianzi, chaemyeon, honne/tatemae, nunchi, and more. Browsable, anecdotal, ideal for quick orientation before a trip or a deal. (Anecdotal, not scholarly — use as a primer, not a citation.)
- Takie Sugiyama Lebra, Japanese Patterns of Behavior (1976). ★★ A respected anthropological account of how face, hierarchy, and the honne/tatemae split organize Japanese social life. Older but foundational.
Lighter and free
- Erin Meyer's HBR articles and talks. ★ Searchable, short, free — "Navigating the Cultural Minefield" and her pieces on giving feedback across cultures are a fast, concrete first taste of how face shapes the workplace.
- The word "face" in English itself. ★ A five-minute reflection: notice how you already say "save face," "lose face," and feel the difference between being corrected privately and publicly. The concept isn't foreign — your own language carries it, just turned down low. (See Chapter 3's "the West has face too.")
A reading suggestion. If you read only one scholarly thing, read Hu's 1944 article — it's short, and the mianzi/lian distinction will reorganize how you see every "face moment" thereafter. If you want the one practical companion, keep Meyer's The Culture Map at your elbow: her feedback and trust scales are face theory translated directly into "what do I actually do in the meeting." Save Goffman and Brown & Levinson for when you want the deep machinery underneath.
