This chapter surveyed a very wide field, from tested hardware to interstellar speculation. The resources below are chosen to let you go deeper without losing the discipline the chapter insisted on — separating what has flown from what is merely allowed by physics. Sources are Tier 1 (canonical works we are confident exist) or Tier 2 (a real, named result or resource whose exact edition or URL we do not pin down here).
Core textbook treatments
Sutton & Biblarz, Rocket Propulsion Elements (9th ed.), chapters on nuclear and electric propulsion. Our standard propulsion reference. Its chapters on nuclear thermal and electric rockets give the rigorous version of §21.1–21.2, including real engine data and the performance relations we sketched. Start here for the engineering. Tier 1.
M. J. L. Turner, Rocket and Spacecraft Propulsion (3rd ed.), Springer. The single best textbook match to this whole chapter: it devotes serious chapters to nuclear thermal, electric, solar-sail, and advanced/interstellar propulsion, at exactly our level of rigor, with the ideal performance calculations worked out. If you read one book beyond Sutton & Biblarz, read this. Tier 1.
Colin R. McInnes, Solar Sailing: Technology, Dynamics and Mission Applications, Springer. The definitive text on solar sails. It derives radiation-pressure force, the lightness number, and non-Keplerian sail trajectories far beyond §21.4 — the reference if sails capture your interest. Tier 1.
On the nuclear programs
NASA / AEC technical reports on Project Rover and NERVA. The primary record of the reactors that were actually fired — Kiwi, Phoebus, NRX, XE-Prime — with the measured specific impulses and thrusts we used in Case Study 1. Search NASA's technical reports server for "NERVA" and "Project Rover." Tier 2 — real report series; exact document numbers vary.
DRACO (Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations), NASA–DARPA program pages. The modern revival of nuclear thermal propulsion, using low-enriched uranium. The public program material is the best current source on where nuclear thermal propulsion actually stands. Tier 2 — an active program; find current status by searching the program name.
George Dyson, Project Orion: The True Story of the Atomic Spaceship (2002). A gripping, well-documented history of nuclear pulse propulsion, written by the son of one of its architects. It conveys both the seriousness of the engineering (the chemical-explosive test flights) and the reasons it was never built. The best single source on §21.3. Tier 1/Tier 2 — a real, widely reviewed book.
On the far frontier
Breakthrough Starshot / Breakthrough Initiatives program material. The public technical case for beamed light-sail propulsion to Alpha Centauri (§21.5), including the power, sail, and pointing challenges. Read it as a careful proposal, not a plan — which is exactly the chapter's stance. Tier 2.
Robert L. Forward, papers and popular writing on beamed and antimatter propulsion. Forward was a physicist who worked out interstellar beamed-sail and antimatter concepts in genuine detail; his work is the serious end of the far frontier and a model of "rigorous about the physics, honest about the timeline." Tier 2 — real published work; specific papers vary.
Watch, browse, and play
Scott Manley, YouTube — videos on nuclear rockets, solar sails, and Orion. Clear, numerically honest explanations of every concept in this chapter, by an expert who is careful about the demonstrated-versus-theoretical line. Tier 2.
"Atomic Rockets" (Winchell Chung), online. A famous, deeply researched reference site for propulsion concepts, full of the equations and real numbers of nuclear, electric, sail, and exotic drives — a superb sanity-check resource when you meet a bold claim. Tier 2 — a long-running, well-regarded site.
Kerbal Space Program (with mods). Stock KSP includes a nuclear thermal engine (the "Nerv") whose high-$I_{sp}$/low-thrust behavior is §21.1 made tangible; popular mods add ion tugs, solar sails, and even Orion drives. The fastest way to feel the trades in this chapter. Tier 2 — a commercial game.
Suggested order
- Reread §21.1–21.2, then read Turner's nuclear and electric chapters for the rigorous versions.
- Watch Scott Manley on nuclear rockets and on solar sails to hear a second voice on the same physics.
- Read George Dyson's Project Orion for the history — and the ethics — of §21.3.
- Skim the Breakthrough Starshot material and one Forward piece, holding the chapter's discipline: what does physics permit, and what can engineering actually build?
- If you have KSP, fly a nuclear-thermal transfer stage and a solar sail, and watch the numbers behave exactly as this chapter said they would.
