Further Reading: Small Satellites, CubeSats, and Constellations
This is the fastest-moving corner of spaceflight, so the best sources mix a few stable references with living documents that are revised as the field changes. Everything below is Tier 1 (canonical works and primary NASA/standards documents we are confident exist) or Tier 2 (a real, named resource whose exact edition or URL we do not pin down here). Nothing requires more math than §33.5's coverage geometry.
Core textbook treatments
Wertz, Everett & Puschell, Space Mission Engineering: The New SMAD. The systems-engineering reference for this whole Part, and the source of the coverage geometry in §33.5 — its treatment of the elevation, nadir, and Earth-central angles, and of constellation and coverage design, is where the $\eta$–$\lambda$–$\varepsilon$ relations come from. Read its coverage and constellation chapters alongside this one. Tier 1.
Vallado, Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications. For the rigorous version of the geometry — access, ground tracks, repeat-coverage, and Walker constellation patterns — this is the definitive engineering treatment, with the equations our chapter summarized. Tier 1.
The standard and the state of the art
The CubeSat Design Specification (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo). The actual open standard that defines the unit, the mechanical envelope, the deployer interface, and the safety rules of §33.2. Reading even the first few pages shows how much of the "revolution" is really a set of promises to the launch provider and the other rideshares. Tier 1 — a real primary document; find the current revision from Cal Poly.
NASA, "State of the Art of Small Spacecraft Technology" (NASA Ames technical report). A regularly updated NASA survey of every small-sat subsystem — power, comms, ADCS, propulsion, structures — with real parts and performance numbers. It is the single best companion to §33.3 and is freely available. Tier 1 — a genuine, periodically revised NASA technical report.
Constellations, economics, and the debris question
Sweeting, "Modern Small Satellites — Changing the Economics of Space" (review article). A readable overview by one of the pioneers of the small-satellite industry, covering exactly the democratization story of §33.1 and the economics of §33.6. Tier 2 — a real review; search the title for the current version.
Public regulatory filings for Starlink and OneWeb (FCC / ITU). The orbital shells, altitudes, inclinations, and satellite counts of §33.5 are matters of public record in the operators' regulatory filings. They are the primary source behind every "approximate, Tier 2" figure in the chapter, and worth a look to see real constellation parameters. Tier 2 — public filings; details change as constellations are revised.
The Space Debris and sustainability literature (preview of Chapter 35). The debris question of §33.6 is developed fully in Chapter 35; its further-reading list (IADC guidelines, the Kessler literature, ESA/NASA debris reports) is the place to go deeper. See Chapter 35.
Watch and track
Scott Manley, YouTube — videos on Starlink, constellations, and how satellites are deployed. Clear, expert explanations of constellation design, rideshare deployment, and the debris debate, pitched at exactly this chapter's level. Tier 2.
Jonathan McDowell, "Jonathan's Space Report" and the planet4589 catalogs. An astronomer's meticulous public tracking of every satellite launched, including live counts of the mega-constellations — the best way to watch the numbers of §33.5–33.6 change in real time. Tier 2 — a real, long-running catalog.
Suggested order
- Reread §33.5, then work the coverage geometry in the SMAD coverage chapter to see the relations derived rather than asserted.
- Skim the CubeSat Design Specification's opening pages to feel what "standard" really means (§33.2).
- Browse the NASA "State of the Art" report for one subsystem you care about (§33.3) to see real COTS parts.
- Watch a Scott Manley constellation/Starlink video, then check the current satellite count on Jonathan's Space Report — and come back to §33.6's debris question with the real numbers in hand.
