What Is Motivated Reasoning?

In some studies, higher analytical ability actually increases the correlation between cultural identity and factual belief—that is, more analytically sophisticated individuals become better at finding reasons to reject evidence that threatens their group's worldview.

If motivated reasoning is driven by identity protection rather than simple ignorance, then providing better information is unlikely to be sufficient. This is generally adaptive. Information that processes easily is usually information that is familiar, well-learned, and associated with reliable prior knowledge. Ease of processing can thus be a reasonable proxy for trustworthiness. But this heuristic can be exploited.
Truth by fluency: A claim stated in simple, clear language processes more easily than the same claim stated in complex language. If processing ease is misattributed to truthfulness rather than to linguistic simplicity, then simply articulating claims simply can make them seem more credible—regardless of their actual truth value.
Familiarity as truth: Repeated exposure increases fluency (as discussed in Section 3.4). But many other factors also increase fluency: rhyme and rhythm (aphorisms and slogans are easy to process partly because of their rhythmic structure), bold or high-contrast text, clear fonts, high image quality, and familiar vocabulary. Rhyme-as-Reason and Other Fluency Effects
McGlone and Tofighbakhsh (2000) demonstrated the rhyme-as-reason effect: statements that rhyme ("What sobriety conceals, alcohol reveals") were rated as more accurate than non-rhyming versions of the same claim ("What sobriety conceals, alcohol unmasks"), even though the semantic content is identical. The rhyming version processes more fluently, and this fluency is misattributed to truth.
