Graves, Lucas. (2016). Deciding What's True: The Rise of Political Fact-Checking in American Journalism. Columbia University Press.
This is the definitive scholarly treatment of the fact-checking movement as an institution. Graves, a journalist-turned-academic, combines ethnographic fieldwork inside PolitiFact and other fact-checking organizations with historical analysis and media theory to produce a comprehensive account of how fact-checking emerged, how it works in practice, and what its development means for journalism and democratic culture. Particularly valuable for its "inside" access to fact-checkers' actual decision-making processes — the book reveals the gap between the clean methodological descriptions organizations publish and the messy reality of editorial decisions under time pressure. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand fact-checking as a social institution rather than merely as a set of techniques.
Nyhan, Brendan, and Jason Reifler. (2010). "When Corrections Fail: The Persistence of Political Misperceptions." Political Behavior, 32(2), 303–330.
The foundational study of the backfire effect — the theorized phenomenon in which corrections cause some individuals to hold their prior beliefs more firmly. Nyhan and Reifler's experimental findings were enormously influential, widely cited as evidence that fact-checking is ineffective or counterproductive. The paper is important to read both for its findings and for the subsequent scholarly debate it generated. Students should read this alongside Wood and Porter (2019) below, which substantially revises the backfire effect finding. Demonstrates the importance of distinguishing between what experimental studies find and how their findings are amplified and interpreted in public discourse.
Wood, Thomas, and Ethan Porter. (2019). "The Elusive Backfire Effect: Mass Attitudes' Steadfast Factual Adherence." Political Behavior, 41(1), 135–163.
The most comprehensive study attempting to replicate and extend the Nyhan-Reifler backfire effect. Across 52 experimental tests, Wood and Porter find that corrections generally cause belief updating in the direction of accuracy, with little evidence of backfire effects, even among strongly partisan participants. This paper substantially revises the prevailing view in journalism and public discourse about correction efficacy. Essential companion to Nyhan and Reifler (2010). Demonstrates the self-correcting nature of empirical research when replication is pursued rigorously.

Students should read the actual principles rather than descriptions of them, as the specific wording reveals both the substantive commitments required and the gaps and ambiguities that critics have identified. The five principles cover nonpartisanship, transparency of sources, transparency of funding, transparency of methodology, and corrections policies. Essential primary source for understanding the institutional standards framework within which professional fact-checkers operate. Available free online.
Uscinski, Joseph E., and Ryden W. Butler. (2013). "The Epistemology of Fact Checking." Critical Review, 25(2), 162–180.
This study asked subjects to apply PolitiFact's stated methodology to sample claims and measured inter-rater agreement. Finding substantial disagreement, the authors conclude that fact-checking ratings are more subjective than organizations' methodological claims imply. The paper is one of the stronger academic critiques of fact-checking methodology and deserves engagement on its own terms, though students should note that the conclusion that subjectivity exists does not necessarily establish that fact-checking is politically biased. Provides important context for evaluating methodological transparency claims.

The Poynter Institute's regularly updated compendium of government, platform, and civil society actions against online misinformation worldwide. An invaluable reference for understanding the policy environment in which fact-checking organizations operate, including both supportive policies (public funding for fact-checking, integration with election monitoring) and hostile ones (legal threats against fact-checkers, criminalization of "false news"). Effectiveness and Effects
Nyhan, Brendan, et al. (2019). "Taking Fact-Checks Literally but Not Seriously? The Effects of Journalistic Fact-Checking on Factual Beliefs and Candidate Favorability." Political Behavior, 41(3), 939–960.
This study examines how exposure to fact-checks affects both factual beliefs and candidate evaluations. The finding that fact-checks can change factual beliefs without changing candidate favorability — the "taking literally but not seriously" pattern — is among the most important findings for understanding fact-checking's political impact. It suggests that even effective fact-checking (in the sense of belief change) may not translate into the political behavioral changes (voting, political engagement) that would constitute success in a broader democratic accountability framework.
Vosoughi, Soroush, Deb Roy, and Sinan Aral. (2018). "The Spread of True and False News Online." Science, 359(6380), 1146–1151.
This large-scale analysis of Twitter data found that false news stories spread faster, farther, and more broadly than true stories across all categories of content, driven primarily by human behavior rather than bots. The finding provides the context for understanding why fact-checking faces such a severe scale and speed challenge — misinformation spreads precisely because of the dynamics (novelty, emotional engagement, controversy) that make rapid human spread more likely. Essential context for assessing fact-checking's practical impact even when it is effective at correcting individual beliefs.

Full Fact, the UK-based fact-checking organization, publishes annual reports on its automation work. These reports describe current capabilities, ongoing development efforts, and explicit assessments of what automation can and cannot achieve. As primary source documents from a leading practitioner, they offer insights unavailable in academic literature. Students interested in the practical deployment of automated tools in fact-checking organizations should consult Full Fact's published reports directly.
Global Fact-Checking

Duke University's Reporters' Lab maintains the most comprehensive global census of fact-checking organizations, tracking their founding dates, countries, languages, thematic focuses, and IFCN certification status. Based on interviews with fact-checking practitioners from multiple countries, this paper examines the critical junctures that shaped the development of fact-checking in different national contexts and fact-checkers' own perceptions of their work's purpose, challenges, and trajectory. Crowdsourced Fact-Checking

Research showing that brief accuracy prompts — simply asking people to think about accuracy before sharing — can reduce sharing of false information. Van der Linden and colleagues show that exposing participants to the techniques used in climate misinformation, along with a clear explanation of the scientific consensus, reduces subsequent susceptibility to climate misinformation. Roozenbeek, Jon, and Sander van der Linden. (2019). "Fake News Game Confers Psychological Resistance against Online Misinformation." Palgrave Communications, 5(1), 65.
Documents the development and evaluation of "Bad News," an online game that teaches players to recognize six common misinformation techniques (emotional manipulation, impersonation, conspiracy theories, discrediting opponents, polarization, and trolling). Players who completed the game showed reduced susceptibility to sample misinformation stimuli. The game-based delivery format addresses some of the reach limitations of text-based prebunking.
