Section 25.1: The Structure of Arguments
What Is an Argument?
In everyday language, "argument" often means a quarrel or disagreement. In logic, the word has a precise technical meaning: an argument is a structured set of statements in which one or more statements (the premises) are offered as reasons for accepting another statement (the conclusion).
Arguments are not mere expressions of opinion. They are attempts to justify a belief or action by providing evidence or reasons. This distinguishes them from three other common speech acts that are frequently confused with arguments:
Assertions are simple statements of belief or fact made without supporting reasons. "Vaccines cause autism" is an assertion, not an argument. When a speaker adds no evidence and no inferential connective linking a reason to a claim, they have asserted, not argued.
Explanations account for why something is the case. When we explain, we typically already accept that the conclusion is true and are providing a causal or interpretive account. "The bridge collapsed because the steel was fatigued" explains the collapse rather than arguing that it occurred. The primary purpose of an explanation is understanding, not persuasion or justification.
Descriptions convey factual information without attempting to justify a claim. A news article that reports "the president signed the bill on Tuesday" is describing an event.
The distinction matters because misinformation often masquerades as argument. A collection of alarming statistics about an unrelated topic may feel like a compelling argument for a conclusion while providing no logical support whatsoever.
Premises and Conclusions
Every argument has two essential structural elements:
Premises are the statements offered as evidence or reasons. They represent what the arguer assumes or asserts to be true in support of the conclusion.
Conclusions are the statements that the arguer is trying to establish. A conclusion is what the premises are designed to support.
Consider the classic example:
- Premise 1: All humans are mortal.
- Premise 2: Socrates is a human.
- Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
The word "therefore" is an inferential indicator — a linguistic cue that signals the conclusion follows from what precedes it. Common conclusion indicators include: therefore, thus, hence, consequently, it follows that, so, which shows that, which means that, which implies that.
Common premise indicators (words signaling that a reason is being offered) include: because, since, for, given that, as, inasmuch as, on account of, due to the fact that.
Identifying these linguistic markers is one of the most practical skills in argument analysis. When someone writes "The unemployment rate has fallen, since the government's economic policies have been effective," the word "since" signals that "the government's economic policies have been effective" is the premise supporting "the unemployment rate has fallen."
Standard Form
To analyze an argument clearly, logicians often rewrite it in standard form: listing premises numerically, followed by a horizontal line, followed by the conclusion. This strips away rhetorical flourishes and reveals the bare inferential structure.
Original text: "We should not trust social media for news because social media platforms have financial incentives to promote engagement over accuracy, and sensational misinformation generates more engagement than boring truth."
Standard form: - P1: Social media platforms have financial incentives to promote engagement over accuracy. - P2: Sensational misinformation generates more engagement than boring truth. - C: We should not trust social media for news.
Rendering arguments in standard form immediately raises clarifying questions: Are both premises true? Even if they are, does the conclusion follow? Are there hidden assumptions — implicit premises — that the argument requires but does not state?
Implicit Premises
Most real-world arguments omit premises that the arguer considers obvious. These implicit premises (also called suppressed premises or enthymemes) must be identified to evaluate the full argument.
In the social media example above, an implicit premise might be: "Any news source with financial incentives to distort the truth should not be trusted." This hidden premise does considerable work. Once explicit, we can ask whether it is true: Should we distrust all newspapers, which also have financial incentives? The implicit premise connects the stated reasons to the conclusion, and making it visible often reveals where arguments are weakest.
Evaluating Arguments: Validity and Soundness
For deductive arguments (covered fully in Section 25.2), two fundamental evaluative standards apply:
Validity is a property of the inferential structure. An argument is valid if and only if it is impossible for all the premises to be true while the conclusion is false. Validity is about logical form — whether the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises — not about whether the premises are actually true.
Soundness requires both validity and true premises. A sound argument is one that is valid and has premises that are all actually true. Sound arguments guarantee true conclusions.
This distinction is crucial for detecting misinformation. A bad actor can construct arguments that are valid (the logic works) but unsound (the premises are false), or that are neither valid nor sound. Recognizing valid-but-unsound arguments is a key critical thinking skill.
Section 25.2: Deductive Logic
The Nature of Deductive Reasoning
Deductive arguments aim for certainty. If a deductive argument is valid and the premises are true, the conclusion must be true — no exceptions, no probability. Deductive reasoning "locks in" its conclusion with logical necessity.
This guarantee comes at a price: deductive arguments cannot give us new information beyond what is already contained in the premises. They make explicit what was implicit. Their power lies in formal validity, which can be evaluated independently of empirical facts.
The Four Cardinal Valid Argument Forms
Modus Ponens (Affirming the Antecedent)
Form: 1. If P, then Q. 2. P. 3. Therefore, Q.
Example: 1. If a study has been retracted, then its conclusions should not be cited as evidence. 2. This study has been retracted. 3. Therefore, its conclusions should not be cited as evidence.
Modus ponens is perhaps the most fundamental valid argument form. Any argument fitting this structure, regardless of content, is valid. Note that validity says nothing about whether the premises are true — premise 1 might be debatable (should we never cite any finding from a retracted paper?), but the inference itself is logically impeccable.
Modus Tollens (Denying the Consequent)
Form: 1. If P, then Q. 2. Not-Q. 3. Therefore, not-P.
Example: 1. If vaccines cause autism, then autism rates would rise as vaccination rates rise. 2. Autism rates do not consistently rise as vaccination rates rise (in fact, autism diagnoses increased even as the MMR vaccine rates held steady or changed independently). 3. Therefore, vaccines do not cause autism.
Modus tollens is the backbone of scientific hypothesis testing: if our hypothesis were true, we would observe a certain result. We do not observe that result. Therefore, our hypothesis is false (or requires revision). It is also the logic behind refuting misinformation: show that the claim, if true, would have observable implications that are not observed.
Hypothetical Syllogism
Form: 1. If P, then Q. 2. If Q, then R. 3. Therefore, if P, then R.
Example: 1. If we eliminate critical thinking education, then citizens will be less able to evaluate claims. 2. If citizens are less able to evaluate claims, then they become more vulnerable to misinformation. 3. Therefore, if we eliminate critical thinking education, then citizens will become more vulnerable to misinformation.
Hypothetical syllogism allows chains of conditional reasoning. It is valid as a formal matter, but chains of conditionals in real-world arguments often contain weak links — a conditional that does not actually hold — which breaks the chain.
Disjunctive Syllogism
Form: 1. Either P or Q. 2. Not-P. 3. Therefore, Q.
Example: 1. Either the news report is accurate or the organization is lying. 2. The news report is not accurate. 3. Therefore, the organization is lying.
Disjunctive syllogism is valid, but its use in practice depends critically on whether the disjunction in premise 1 is exhaustive. In the example, there are other possibilities: the news report might be mistaken rather than deliberately false, or partially accurate, or the relevant "organization" may be internally divided. The false dichotomy fallacy (covered in Section 25.5) exploits disjunctive syllogism by offering incomplete disjunctions.
Validity Versus Truth: A Critical Distinction
Valid arguments can have false premises and still be valid. Consider:
- All journalists are paid liars.
- Jane is a journalist.
- Therefore, Jane is a paid liar.
This argument is valid — IF the premises were true, the conclusion would have to be true. But premise 1 is manifestly false. The argument is valid but not sound.
Conversely, arguments can have true premises and true conclusions but be invalid:
- The Earth orbits the Sun.
- Humans breathe oxygen.
- Therefore, 2 + 2 = 4.
All three statements are true, but the premises provide no logical support for the conclusion. The argument is invalid (coincidentally true conclusion, but the inference is broken).
This distinction matters in practice. Propagandists and misinformers sometimes present valid-but-unsound arguments (logically coherent but false premises) or psychologically persuasive but invalid arguments (premises feel relevant but don't logically entail the conclusion). Separating logical structure from factual content is the critical thinker's first task.
Section 25.3: Inductive Logic
The Nature of Inductive Reasoning
Where deductive reasoning aims for certainty, inductive reasoning aims for probability. Inductive arguments support their conclusions with varying degrees of probability but cannot guarantee them, even when all premises are true. A strong inductive argument makes its conclusion likely, not certain.
This probabilistic quality is not a weakness — it is what makes inductive reasoning productive. Deductive reasoning is truth-preserving but information-conserving. Inductive reasoning generates new hypotheses and generalizations from specific observations, which is how science advances.
Inductive Strength and Cogency
An inductive argument is strong if the premises, assuming they are true, make the conclusion probable. It is weak if the premises provide little support for the conclusion.
An inductive argument is cogent if it is both strong and has true premises. Cogency is the inductive analog of soundness.
Factors that affect inductive strength include: - Sample size: More observations generally yield stronger generalizations. - Sample representativeness: A sample that systematically excludes relevant subgroups produces biased inferences. - Variability: When the phenomenon varies widely, larger samples are needed. - Specificity of the conclusion: More specific conclusions are harder to establish inductively.
Analogical Reasoning
Analogical reasoning draws inferences about one case based on its similarities to another. The structure is:
- Case A has properties P, Q, R, and S.
- Case B has properties P, Q, and R.
- Therefore, Case B probably has property S.
The strength of an analogical argument depends on: 1. Relevance of similarities: The shared properties (P, Q, R) must be causally relevant to the inferred property (S). 2. Number of relevant similarities: More relevant similarities strengthen the analogy. 3. Number and relevance of disanalogies: Important differences between A and B weaken the analogy. 4. Specificity of the conclusion: Analogies support probable conclusions better than certain ones.
Misinformation frequently deploys flawed analogies. A common example: "COVID-19 lockdowns are just like Nazi Germany." The comparison may identify a superficial similarity (restrictions on movement) while ignoring vast and relevant disanalogies (the historical, political, ideological, and consequential context). Evaluating analogies requires identifying which similarities are actually doing inferential work.
Inductive Generalization
Inductive generalization moves from observed instances to general claims:
- Observed: X% of sampled population holds belief B.
- Inferred: Approximately X% of the whole population holds belief B.
For this inference to be strong, the sample must be large enough, random (or at least representative), and free from systematic bias. Selection bias — the systematic tendency to sample non-representatively — is one of the most common ways inductive generalizations fail. Online polls, Twitter responses, and convenience samples are notorious for selection bias.
The Problem of Induction
David Hume identified a deep philosophical problem: inductive inferences from observations to general laws cannot themselves be justified by induction without circularity, nor by deductive logic without begging the question. How do we know that the future will resemble the past?
This is not merely an academic puzzle. It explains why science cannot "prove" theories — it can only accumulate evidence. It explains why a pattern observed in the past (say, a medical treatment that has worked in 50 patients) does not guarantee the pattern will continue (it may work in patient types not yet studied). Awareness of the problem of induction is awareness of the limits of empirical knowledge, which is itself a form of intellectual humility that combats misinformation by resisting overconfident generalizations.
Section 25.4: Abductive Reasoning
Inference to the Best Explanation
Abductive reasoning, also called inference to the best explanation, proposes the hypothesis that, if true, would best explain the observed evidence. Unlike deduction (which derives necessary conclusions) and induction (which generalizes from samples), abduction formulates explanations.
Structure: 1. Surprising fact E is observed. 2. Hypothesis H, if true, would explain E. 3. No other hypothesis explains E as well as H. 4. Therefore, H is probably true (or at least worth investigating).
Example: You notice that the sidewalk outside is wet but it hasn't rained. Possible hypotheses: a sprinkler ran, someone washed their car, a water main broke. You observe that nearby cars are clean and no sprinkler is visible but a maintenance crew is down the street. You infer: probably a water main break. This is abduction.
Criteria for Evaluating Competing Explanations
When multiple hypotheses compete to explain the same evidence, several criteria help identify the best explanation:
Explanatory scope: How much evidence does the hypothesis explain? A hypothesis that explains a wide range of observations is preferred.
Explanatory power: How well does the hypothesis explain the evidence? Does it make the observations expected rather than merely possible?
Consistency: Is the hypothesis consistent with well-established background knowledge?
Plausibility: Is the hypothesis antecedently plausible, independent of the evidence being explained?
Simplicity (Occam's Razor): All else being equal, prefer the simpler hypothesis — the one that introduces fewer unverified entities or mechanisms.
Occam's Razor
William of Ockham's principle ("entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity") advises us to prefer simpler explanations when multiple hypotheses have equal explanatory power. In practice:
- Simple: The COVID-19 virus originated through natural zoonotic spillover from animal reservoirs to humans (as all previous coronaviruses have).
- Complex: The virus was engineered in a laboratory, secretly released, and a global conspiracy involving thousands of virologists, public health officials, and government agencies has successfully suppressed all evidence.
Occam's razor does not rule out the complex hypothesis — the world can be complex — but it places the evidential burden on complexity. The simpler explanation is the prior default until evidence specifically supports the more complex one. Conspiracy theories typically violate Occam's razor systematically.
The Scientific Method as Abduction
The scientific method can be understood as disciplined abduction: 1. Observe a phenomenon in need of explanation. 2. Formulate a hypothesis that would explain it. 3. Derive predictions: if the hypothesis is true, certain observations should follow. 4. Test those predictions experimentally. 5. Revise the hypothesis in light of results.
What distinguishes scientific abduction from ordinary inference to the best explanation is the insistence on testable predictions (Popper's falsifiability criterion, covered in Chapter 26) and the communal, iterative process of peer review and replication. Science is not just any inference to the best explanation — it is the systematic, public, self-correcting version.
Section 25.5: Informal Fallacies
Informal fallacies are errors in reasoning that arise from content, context, or manner of presentation rather than from formal logical structure. They are particularly important in the study of misinformation because they appear constantly in propaganda, political rhetoric, advertising, and pseudoscience.
Each fallacy below is defined, explained, and illustrated with a misinformation-relevant example.
1. Ad Hominem (Attacking the Person)
Definition: Dismissing or attacking an argument by criticizing the person making it rather than the argument itself.
Variants: - Abusive ad hominem: Direct personal attack ("You can't trust Dr. Smith's climate research — she's a socialist"). - Circumstantial ad hominem: Claiming the person's circumstances bias their claim ("Of course the drug company researcher says the drug is safe — they're paid by pharma"). - Tu quoque: "You too!" (See separate entry below).
Why it fails: The source's character or motives are logically irrelevant to whether their claims are true. A flawed person can state true facts; an admirable person can state false ones. The argument must be evaluated on its merits.
Misinformation example: "Why would you believe anything about vaccines from someone who works at the CDC? They're in the pocket of Big Pharma." This dismisses all CDC findings based on alleged institutional bias rather than evaluating the actual evidence.
2. Straw Man
Definition: Misrepresenting an opponent's argument in a weaker, easier-to-attack form, then defeating the weakened version.
Why it fails: Refuting a distorted version of an argument does not refute the actual argument.
Misinformation example: "Climate activists say we should eliminate all fossil fuels tomorrow and send everyone back to the Stone Age." This misrepresents moderate policy proposals for gradual, managed energy transitions. No serious climate scientist or activist advocates immediate elimination of all fossil fuels without any transition.
3. False Dichotomy (False Dilemma)
Definition: Presenting only two options when more exist, forcing a choice between extremes.
Why it fails: Reality is rarely binary. The forced choice excludes viable middle grounds and alternatives.
Misinformation example: "Either you support completely unrestricted gun ownership, or you want to take away every citizen's firearms." This ignores a vast spectrum of possible regulatory positions (background checks, red flag laws, magazine limits, etc.).
4. Slippery Slope
Definition: Claiming that one event will inevitably lead to a chain of extreme consequences without adequate justification for each causal link.
Why it fails: Each step in the causal chain requires independent justification. Merely asserting inevitability is not evidence.
Misinformation example: "If we allow any COVID vaccine mandates for healthcare workers, next the government will require vaccination for everyone, then they'll control all medical decisions, and soon we'll live in a medical dictatorship." Each step from the last is asserted, not argued.
5. Appeal to Authority (Argumentum ad Verecundiam)
Definition: Citing an authority as evidence in a domain outside their expertise, or citing a non-expert, or using authority as a substitute for evidence rather than a guide to it.
Why it fails: Authority is relevant only when (a) the person is genuinely expert in the relevant domain, (b) there is expert consensus rather than outlier opinion, and (c) the claim is within the scope of the expertise.
Misinformation example: "Dr. [Famous Surgeon] says vaccines are dangerous, so they must be." A surgeon's credentials in surgery do not make them an authority on immunology or epidemiology. When nearly all relevant experts disagree, citing the outlier as authority is misleading.
6. Appeal to Nature
Definition: Arguing that something is good, right, or safe because it is "natural," or bad because it is "unnatural."
Why it fails: Natural things can be harmful (botulinum toxin, arsenic, cholera). Unnatural things can be beneficial (surgery, vaccines, medications). "Natural" is not a reliable proxy for good or safe.
Misinformation example: "I don't take pharmaceutical drugs — I only use natural herbal remedies because natural is always better." This ignores that many pharmaceuticals are derived from natural sources, that herbal remedies can have serious side effects and drug interactions, and that lack of pharmaceutical-grade standardization in herbal products can cause harm.
7. Appeal to Tradition
Definition: Arguing that something is correct or good simply because it has been done that way for a long time.
Why it fails: Tradition reflects what was believed or done in the past, not necessarily what is true or good. Historical practices were often ignorant of important facts later discovered.
Misinformation example: "People have been using [traditional remedy] for thousands of years, so it must work." This conflates longevity of practice with evidence of efficacy. Bloodletting was practiced for millennia; it killed patients.
8. Appeal to Emotion
Definition: Using emotional manipulation rather than evidence to persuade.
Variants: Fear appeals, appeals to pity, appeals to flattery, appeals to disgust.
Why it fails: Emotional responses, while important in human life, are not reliable guides to truth. A compelling emotional narrative does not make a claim true.
Misinformation example: Anti-vaccination websites prominently feature the testimonials of parents grieving after a child's death, attributed (often without medical basis) to a vaccine. The emotional power of parental grief is real and sympathetic, but it cannot substitute for epidemiological evidence about causation.
9. Tu Quoque ("You Too!")
Definition: Deflecting a criticism by pointing out that the critic is also guilty of the same thing.
Why it fails: The critic's own failures do not address whether their criticism is valid. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Misinformation example: "You say Russia interferes in elections, but the U.S. also interferes in foreign elections!" Even if true, this does not address whether Russia interferes in elections — it changes the subject.
10. Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question)
Definition: Using the conclusion as a premise, or assuming the conclusion in the reasoning meant to establish it.
Why it fails: The reasoning provides no independent support for the conclusion; it merely restates it.
Misinformation example: "The Bible is true because it says so in the Bible." Or: "You can't trust the mainstream media because the mainstream media says it's trustworthy, but of course they would — they're all liars."
11. Hasty Generalization
Definition: Drawing a broad general conclusion from too few, non-representative, or cherry-picked examples.
Why it fails: Isolated examples cannot support sweeping conclusions. The sample may be unrepresentative.
Misinformation example: "My cousin got a COVID vaccine and had a severe reaction. Therefore, vaccines cause serious harm in most people." One person's reaction cannot support a statistical claim about general frequency of harm.
12. Red Herring
Definition: Introducing irrelevant material to distract from the actual issue.
Why it fails: The introduced material, however interesting, does not address the question at hand.
Misinformation example: During debate about a public health measure, a politician pivots: "Why are we talking about this when there are billions of people starving in the world?" The existence of other problems does not address the policy question.
13. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc (After This, Therefore Because of This)
Definition: Concluding that because A preceded B, A caused B.
Why it fails: Temporal sequence is necessary but not sufficient for causation. Countless events precede every other event; most are causally irrelevant.
Misinformation example: "My child received the MMR vaccine at 18 months and was diagnosed with autism at 24 months. The vaccine caused the autism." The temporal sequence is real, but autism symptoms often first become apparent to parents around 18-24 months regardless of vaccination. Without controlled comparison groups, temporal sequence is not causal evidence.
14. False Cause
Definition: Attributing causation based on correlation, temporal sequence, or other non-causal connections.
Why it fails: Correlation does not equal causation. Spurious correlations arise from confounding variables, reverse causation, or chance.
Misinformation example: "Countries with higher chocolate consumption have more Nobel laureates per capita — therefore, chocolate consumption boosts cognitive achievement." This is a classic spurious correlation (wealthy nations consume more chocolate and produce more laureates; wealth is the confounding factor).
15. Bandwagon (Argumentum ad Populum)
Definition: Arguing that something is true or good because many people believe it or do it.
Why it fails: Popularity does not determine truth. Majorities have believed false things throughout history.
Misinformation example: "Millions of people believe [conspiracy theory X], so there must be something to it." The number of believers is irrelevant to whether the theory is correct.
16. No True Scotsman
Definition: When a counterexample is offered, redefining the original claim to exclude it rather than accepting the falsification.
Why it fails: The redefinition makes the claim unfalsifiable and vacuous.
Misinformation example: "Real conservatives don't believe in climate change." "Actually, [prominent conservative] accepts climate science." "Well, he's not a real conservative then." The claim is protected from evidence by definitional retreat.
17. Moving the Goalposts (Shifting Standards)
Definition: Demanding more evidence after initial evidence is provided, raising the standard of proof in an arbitrary or inconsistent way.
Why it fails: If no amount of evidence is ever sufficient, the position is unfalsifiable and held dogmatically rather than evidentially.
Misinformation example: After one vaccine safety study, the response is "One study isn't enough." After ten studies: "They could all be wrong." After a hundred studies: "The pharmaceutical companies control all the research." The standard of proof shifts indefinitely.
18. Gish Gallop
Definition: Overwhelming an opponent with a large volume of weak or frivolous arguments faster than they can be rebutted in the time available.
Why it fails: The quantity of objections creates a false impression of evidential weight. Each objection requires time and expertise to rebut; the gallop exploits asymmetry between producing and refuting claims.
Misinformation example: In an anti-vaccine presentation, 50 claims are presented in 20 minutes: vaccine ingredients are toxic, vaccine trials lasted only X weeks, VAERS reports Y injuries, doctors profit from vaccines, natural immunity is better, certain celebrities are opposed, historical examples of vaccine injuries, and so on. Rebutting all 50 with proper evidence would take hours. The presenter has created an illusion of overwhelming contrary evidence. (See Section 25.7 for detailed treatment.)
19. Cherry Picking (Suppressed Evidence)
Definition: Selectively presenting only the evidence that supports one's conclusion while ignoring or suppressing contrary evidence.
Why it fails: A complete picture of the evidence is required for honest inference. Selecting favorable evidence creates a misleading picture.
Misinformation example: "Look at these six studies showing that X supplement improves cognitive function." Omitting the 30 well-conducted studies that found no effect, some of which have larger sample sizes and better methodology than the six cited.
20. Anecdotal Evidence
Definition: Using individual personal experiences or stories to support generalizations or override systematic evidence.
Why it fails: Individual experiences may be real but are not representative. They cannot override systematic, large-scale studies designed to control for confounding.
Misinformation example: "My grandfather smoked a pack a day until he was 95 and never got cancer. So smoking isn't that dangerous." One long-lived smoker cannot override epidemiological data showing dramatically elevated cancer risk in the smoking population.
21. Loaded Question
Definition: Posing a question that contains a hidden, controversial assumption that the respondent is forced to accept by answering.
Why it fails: Answering either yes or no concedes the embedded assumption.
Misinformation example: "When did the government start lying to us about vaccine safety?" Any direct answer concedes that the government has been lying, which is the contested claim.
22. False Equivalence
Definition: Treating two things as equivalent or presenting "both sides" as equally credible when they are not.
Why it fails: Equivalence requires actual equivalence in evidence quality, expertise, or logical force.
Misinformation example: Presenting one climate scientist's findings alongside one climate denier's claims as if they represent equally credible positions when 97%+ of relevant scientists agree on anthropogenic climate change. Presenting "two sides" in a context of overwhelming consensus manufactures artificial controversy.
23. Nirvana Fallacy (Perfect Solution Fallacy)
Definition: Rejecting a solution because it does not solve the problem perfectly or completely, while ignoring that it is better than alternatives.
Why it fails: The relevant comparison is not with perfection but with alternatives.
Misinformation example: "Vaccines aren't 100% effective, so why bother?" The relevant comparison is not between imperfect vaccines and a perfect solution (which doesn't exist) but between vaccinating and not vaccinating, where the former produces dramatically better outcomes.
24. Appeal to Ignorance (Argumentum ad Ignorantiam)
Definition: Arguing that something is true because it has not been proven false, or that something is false because it has not been proven true.
Why it fails: Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence (though it may be weak evidence depending on context). The burden of proof lies with positive claims.
Misinformation example: "Scientists haven't proven that 5G towers don't cause cancer, which means they might." The inability to prove a universal negative does not validate a positive claim.
25. Begging the Question (Circular Reasoning)
Note: This is often conflated with "raising a question" in colloquial usage. In logic, begging the question is equivalent to circular reasoning (entry 10 above), where the conclusion is smuggled into the premises.
Additional example for clarity: "We know that [alternative medicine practitioner] is trustworthy because he has never given us a reason to doubt him, and we know this because everything he has told us has proven to be true, and we know his claims are true because he is trustworthy."
Additional Notable Fallacies
Genetic fallacy: Judging a claim's truth by its origin rather than its content. Related to ad hominem but focused on origins rather than persons. "That idea came from Nazi Germany, so it must be wrong."
Argument from silence: Arguing that silence implies agreement or negation.
Middle ground fallacy: Assuming the truth lies between two positions when it may not.
Ecological fallacy: Applying group-level statistical findings to individual cases.
Section 25.6: Formal Fallacies
Formal fallacies are errors in the logical form of an argument — invalid argument structures that superficially resemble valid ones. Unlike informal fallacies, they can be identified purely by examining the argument's form.
Affirming the Consequent
Invalid form: 1. If P, then Q. 2. Q. 3. Therefore, P.
This is invalid because Q may be true for reasons unrelated to P. The valid form (modus ponens) affirms P to derive Q; affirming Q does not reverse the arrow.
Example: 1. If the mainstream media is covering up vaccine dangers, then we would see lots of negative stories about vaccines. 2. We do see lots of negative stories about vaccines. 3. Therefore, the mainstream media is covering up vaccine dangers.
But positive vaccine coverage in the media is compatible with many explanations other than a cover-up: journalists might be reporting accurately, the evidence might genuinely be predominantly positive, etc.
Classic logical error: 1. If it rains, the sidewalk is wet. 2. The sidewalk is wet. 3. Therefore, it rained.
Invalid: the sidewalk could be wet from a sprinkler, a spill, or condensation.
Denying the Antecedent
Invalid form: 1. If P, then Q. 2. Not-P. 3. Therefore, not-Q.
This is invalid because Q might be true through pathways other than P.
Example: 1. If you have a fever, you're sick. 2. You don't have a fever. 3. Therefore, you're not sick.
Invalid: many illnesses do not produce fever.
Misinformation example: 1. If the vaccine had serious side effects, VAERS would show many reports. 2. [Arguer asserts] VAERS doesn't show many reports. 3. Therefore, the vaccine doesn't have serious side effects.
Setting aside the false premise 2, the form itself is invalid even if both premises were true.
Section 25.7: The Gish Gallop and Debate Tactics
Duane Gish and the Origin of the Term
The "Gish Gallop" is named after Duane Gish (1921–2013), a biochemist and prominent creationist debater who was observed to deploy an enormous volume of arguments in debates against evolutionary biologists — far more than could be addressed in the available time. The tactic creates an illusion of overwhelming evidential weight through quantity rather than quality.
The term was coined by paleontologist Eugenie Scott and has since been applied broadly to any rhetorical strategy of overwhelming an opponent with volume.
The Asymmetry Principle
The Gish Gallop exploits a fundamental asymmetry in argumentation: it takes far less time and effort to produce a claim than to properly refute one.
To produce the claim "the PCR test generates massive numbers of false positives," a speaker needs perhaps 10 seconds. To properly refute it requires: explaining what PCR tests are, how they work, what "positive" means, the difference between detection of viral RNA and infectious disease, what the actual false positive rates are, what studies have measured this, and why studies showing high rates may have methodological issues. That requires several minutes at minimum, and specialized expertise.
In a 90-minute debate with 45 minutes per side, a Gish Gallop speaker can deploy 50-100 claims. A careful respondent can address perhaps 10-15 with appropriate rigor. The audience sees the respondent addressing only a fraction of the claims and may conclude that the remaining claims were unanswerable.
Recognizing the Gish Gallop
Characteristics of the Gish Gallop in action: - Unusually rapid presentation of claims - Frequent topic changes without developing any claim fully - Claims that vary enormously in character (some empirical, some values-based, some conspiracy-adjacent) - Little or no attempt to engage with the strongest counterarguments - Reliance on the audience's unfamiliarity with specific technical details - Time pressure as a deliberate constraint
Responding to the Gish Gallop
Several strategies help:
The "best argument" approach: Rather than attempting to rebut every claim, identify the three or four strongest claims and address those thoroughly, noting explicitly that the quantity of claims is a rhetorical rather than evidential strategy.
Meta-argument: Name the tactic explicitly. "My opponent has just presented approximately 40 separate claims in 10 minutes. No one can properly address 40 claims in the time available. This is a well-known debate tactic called the Gish Gallop..."
Explicit weighting: Explain that the weight of evidence comes from the quality of well-supported claims, not the volume of assertions.
Pre-bunking: Predict in advance that the Gish Gallop will be used and explain why it is not meaningful evidence.
Other Debate Tactics in Misinformation
Firehosing: A strategy associated with Russian information warfare — flooding the information space with so many contradictory claims that no consistent counter-narrative can gain traction. The goal is not persuasion but confusion and demoralization.
DARVO: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. A manipulation tactic where the accused denies wrongdoing, attacks the accuser, and reverses roles to present themselves as victims.
Strategic ambiguity: Using vague language ("some people say," "many experts believe") to imply support without making falsifiable claims.
Moving the conversation: Changing the subject whenever the current topic becomes uncomfortable.
Section 25.8: Argumentation in Practice
Reconstructing Arguments from News Articles
News writing is not written in standard logical form. Arguments are embedded in narrative, interspersed with quotation, and structured for readability rather than logical transparency. Critical readers must extract and reconstruct the underlying argumentative structure.
Procedure for reconstructing news arguments: 1. Identify the article's main claim (what is the author or the subject trying to establish?). 2. Identify the evidence presented (statistics, expert quotes, case studies, historical comparisons). 3. Identify inferential indicators and reconstruct the argument structure. 4. Identify implicit premises. 5. Evaluate each premise for accuracy. 6. Evaluate the inference for validity or strength. 7. Consider what contrary evidence is not mentioned.
Example reconstruction: A news article headlined "Organic Food Consumption Linked to Reduced Cancer Risk" may implicitly argue: organic food contains fewer pesticides → reduced pesticide exposure → reduced cancer risk. A critical reader asks: Is the link to cancer risk established by the study, or is it a correlation? Was the study observational? Did it control for the fact that organic food consumers are often healthier, wealthier, and have better access to preventive care?
Evaluating Political Speeches
Political speeches are optimized for emotional appeal, memorability, and persuasion — not logical rigor. Common argumentative features of political speeches that deserve critical scrutiny:
- Vague promises and non-falsifiable pledges: "We will make things better."
- False dichotomies: "It's either my plan or disaster."
- Appeal to patriotism: Wrapping policies in national symbolism rather than arguing for their merits.
- Anecdotal case studies: A single person's story used to establish a general policy conclusion.
- Statistics without context: "Crime is up 10%" — from what baseline? By what measure? In which locations?
Analyzing Social Media Posts
Social media argumentation is compressed, context-poor, and virality-optimized. Features to evaluate:
- Source identification: Who is making the claim? What are their credentials? Do they have a financial or ideological stake in the claim?
- Citation of evidence: Does the post cite any actual evidence, or just assert?
- Emotional manipulation markers: Sensational headlines, outrage language, images designed to provoke without informing.
- Fallacy identification: Most viral misinformation relies on one or more of the fallacies cataloged in Section 25.5.
- Absence of qualifications: Scientific claims are always qualified. A social media claim with no uncertainty, no caveats, no acknowledgment of limitations is likely oversimplified at best.
Callout Box: The Burden of Proof
The burden of proof lies with whoever makes a positive claim. The default position is suspension of belief until evidence is provided. The burden does not shift to skeptics to disprove speculative claims.
This principle is captured in Hitchens's Razor: "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."
However, context matters. In legal settings, the burden of proof is defined formally. In epistemic settings, the relevant burden depends on the claim's prior plausibility. A claim consistent with established science requires less evidence than a claim that would overturn established science. The more extraordinary the claim, the greater the evidence required (Carl Sagan's formulation).
Callout Box: Identifying Arguments vs. Rhetoric
Not everything presented as an argument is one. True arguments have identifiable premises and a conclusion in an inferential relationship. Rhetoric may persuade without arguing — through repetition, association, emotional appeal, or aesthetic appeal. When evaluating a speech or article, ask:
- What claim is being made?
- What reasons are given?
- Is there an inferential relationship between the reasons and the claim?
- Would the reasons establish the claim even if divorced from their rhetorical packaging?
