Appendix F: Editing & RAW Workflow Reference

This is the page to keep open beside your editor. The reasoning behind every step lives in the chapters — the histogram and the develop order in Chapter 26, mobile editing in Chapter 25, color in Chapter 27, retouching and its ethics in Chapter 29, and the cull-and-archive pipeline in Chapter 30. This appendix strips the reasoning away and leaves the sequence: the canonical order of operations, what each step does, the phone-equivalent path, and the tell-tale signs of over-editing to avoid.

One promise governs the whole reference: it names tool categories, never products. Every developer — desktop, free, or the photo app already on your phone — has these controls under some name. The skill is in the file and the light, not in any one program, so it transfers to whatever is in your hand. Where a control is labeled differently across apps, the common aliases are listed.

A second principle governs the whole craft and is worth stating once at the top:

Non-destructive editing. Your edits are stored as a recipe — a list of instructions — applied to the original on the fly, never written back into the file you shot. The original RAW stays pristine forever; every adjustment is reversible, comparable, and reproducible. The only step that commits pixels is export, and even that writes a new file. Work this way always. If an app edits your only original destructively, duplicate the file first and edit the copy. (Full treatment: §26.4.)


F.1 The canonical workflow, end to end

This is the spine: card to delivered file, in the order that never makes you redo work. Each stage assumes the ones above it are settled.

  The whole arc: organize → develop globally → finish → grade → retouch →
  crop → deliver. Color honest before expressive; global before local;
  tone before color. Learn the order first; adapt it on purpose later.

Noise reduction, sharpening, and lens correction form a "finishing layer." Some workflows fold the lens profile to the very top (geometry first) and push output sharpening to export; both are correct. What is not negotiable: clean grain before you crisp edges, and settle tones and crop before either. The mnemonic from §26.5 — correct the glass, clean the grain, then crisp the edges.


F.2 What each step does (and the over-editing tell to avoid)

The reference table. Read the right-hand column as a set of alarms: the moment you see that tell, you have gone too far. Over-editing is rarely one big mistake — it is a dozen small slider-shoves nobody decided to make.

The single most common over-edit: slamming saturation first, to give a flat RAW instant "pop." It is the most tempting control and the most destructive habit. Fix tone before color, set color accurate before expressive, and prefer vibrance (which protects already-saturated tones and skin) over a global saturation shove. If you need a big color move, the problem is usually upstream — fix white balance or exposure first.

The "is this over-edited?" checklist

Run this before you export anything portfolio-bound:

  • [ ] Skin still has pores and texture — not poreless, plastic, or dipped in wax.
  • [ ] There is a true black and a clean white somewhere — the histogram touches near both ends; no milky, lifted, grey-everywhere "fog."
  • [ ] No bright halos trace the high-contrast edges (over-sharpening / over-clarity).
  • [ ] Skies and skin are believable — no radioactive blue, no orange-tan faces against teal shadows.
  • [ ] Local edits are invisible — no spotlight blobs; the eye is steered, not told.
  • [ ] Nothing was reshaped or removed that changes the truth of what was in front of the lens (§F.5).
  • [ ] It looks like the scene at its best, not like a different scene. Walk away, come back in an hour, look again — over-editing is most visible to fresh eyes.

F.3 The global develop pass — the reference order

This is steps 4–9 of §F.1, expanded. It does roughly 80% of the work on any file and should become muscle memory. Each control is shown with its job, the decision it serves, and the phone-equivalent path.

The two rules that keep you out of trouble: global before local, and tone before color. Settle the whole frame's brightness and contrast before painting on individual areas, and settle brightness/contrast before pushing color — because contrast changes apparent saturation, so doing color first means doing it twice.

Reading the histogram (the one honest readout)

   • Data SPIKING a wall = CLIPPED → pure black or pure white, NO detail to recover.
   • Data LEANING toward a wall on a RAW = usually still recoverable (lots of headroom).
   • "Correct" is rarely centered — it's where nothing important is jammed against a wall.
   • Recovery needs SURVIVING DIFFERENCES: it rescues a nearly-blown RAW, does nothing
     for a fully-blown one. A hard spike is a re-shoot, not a slider.

Turn on your camera's highlight clipping warning ("blinkies") in the field, and judge exposure by the histogram — never by the rear screen, which is bright in the dark and dark in the sun (§26.2).


F.4 The mobile quick-edit (one-minute develop)

You can do the entire global develop on a phone with a finger; the thinking is identical to the desktop, just faster (Chapter 25). Use this when you shot RAW on the trail an hour ago and want to post tonight.

  Rule of thumb: GLOBAL before LOCAL, TONE before COLOR. It's non-destructive —
  revisit any step — but START in this order.

A real mobile develop app (not just a filter app) must do three things, or it cannot replace a darkroom: (a) develop a RAW/DNG non-destructively with full revert-to-original, (b) offer local adjustments (brushes/masks), and (c) let you save and reapply your own presets (§25.1).

Presets are a starting point, not a finish. A preset is your whole develop recipe saved and re-applied to give a set of images one coherent look. It sets the style identically — but it cannot set each frame's brightness, because every frame was lit differently. After applying a preset across a take, go through and adjust each image's exposure individually so they match. Build your own over time; they encode your taste. Bought "preset packs" rarely look like their sales examples, which were hand-finished after the preset (§25.4).


F.5 The line: enhancement vs. manipulation

The boundary is not about how much work you did — a single surgical click can be a profound manipulation, while an hour of careful dodging is pure enhancement. The test is about the record (Chapter 29).

The one-sentence test. If the edit still truthfully shows what was in front of the lens, it is enhancement. If it now shows something that did not occur, it is manipulation. Removing a sensor-dust spot is enhancement (the dust was on the sensor, not in the world); removing a person who was genuinely there is manipulation (§29.4).

The line moves by context, from most permissive to strictest: personal/creative (the line is consent and self-honesty) → portrait/wedding ("themselves on their best day") → advertising (legal truth-in-advertising limits) → documentaryphotojournalism (the strictest: essentially no adding, removing, or moving anything). Know which context your photograph lives in before you reach for the heal tool. And on skin specifically: smoothing is fine; erasing all texture is the over-edit, because human vision reads poreless skin as fake (§29.2).

♿ Accessibility & Inclusion. Editing choices are inclusion choices. Edit so skin tones stay true to the person across the whole tonal range (white-balance and HSL with care, never lightening or "evening" skin in a way that erases someone); keep color-grade contrast legible for color-blind viewers; and when you export, write a real image description / alt text — which, conveniently, is exactly the Described-Photograph practice this book has been training all along.


F.6 Asset management — the bookends

Develop is the middle; these are the bookends that protect the work (Chapter 30).

Before — the four moves of a good ingest, in order: (1) copy off the card; (2) verify the copy (frame counts match); (3) rename to a convention; (4) back up immediately. The card is the only backup until a second copy exists — do not format it first.

The two-pass cull: Pass 1 — reject only the technically dead (out of focus where it matters, eyes closed, mis-exposed beyond recovery, the weaker of a duplicate); fast, ~2 seconds a frame. Pass 2 — rate the survivors (★★★ keeper, ★★★★ develop / portfolio candidate, ★★★★★ best-of-shoot); compare near-duplicates side by side and keep the single best. Splitting rejecting (reflexive) from selecting (deliberate) is what makes culling fast and regret-free.

After — the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of every image, on 2 different kinds of media, with 1 kept off-site (or in the cloud). One copy is zero backups. Back up both your originals and your catalog — lose the catalog and you keep your RAWs but lose every edit, rating, and keyword.


F.7 File formats — the one-glance reference

RAW = latitude. A RAW looks flat on open because nobody has made it pretty yet — that flatness is the look of maximum headroom (§26.1). Shoot RAW for keepers; a JPEG is genuinely fine for a snapshot you will never edit. Export the delivery copy as JPEG; keep the RAW (and any TIFF master) as your archive.


The three habits that travel across every edit on this card: (1) decide what the photograph is about before you touch a slider; (2) make color honest before expressive, and tone before color; (3) work non-destructively and judge by the histogram, not the bright screen. The develop is the performance of the negative — but the negative was the decision. Now go finish a picture.
