Decision rule: Might you ever finish this image? Shoot RAW. The flatness is the look of maximum latitude, not a flaw.

Two rules to live by: 1. Judge exposure by the histogram, never the rear screen. The screen's brightness lies; the histogram doesn't. 2. Recovery needs surviving differences. It rescues a nearly clipped RAW and does nothing for a fully clipped one — because a clipped region holds identical maximum (or minimum) values with no detail to redistribute.

Expose to the right (ETTR): for static scenes, push exposure as bright as possible without clipping important highlights, then pull back in develop. Sensors record the most data in the brightest stops, so a brighter-but-unclipped frame yields cleaner shadows.

Why this order: each step assumes the ones above are settled. Color is the foundation; tones are placed before the eye is steered; finishing (noise, sharpening) depends on settled tones and crop; export is the only step that commits pixels — and only to a new file. The order is the efficiency — it frees your attention for judgment.

Why the curve beats the contrast slider: the slider steepens everything uniformly, crushing shadows and clipping highlights; the curve adds contrast where you choose and protects the ends.

Three non-negotiables: 1. Back up the catalog and the originals. Lose the catalog → keep raw files, lose every edit + keyword. Lose the originals → edits point at nothing. Both are irreplaceable (3-2-1 rule, Ch.30). 2. Move/rename files inside the software, or you break the catalog's links ("missing file"). 3. Export = the only step that commits pixels — and only to a fresh copy.
