Case Study 20.2 — Shoot-Along: An Afternoon at the Park, Freezing and Panning the Action

Case Study 20.1 took a finished masterpiece apart. This one builds a session from nothing — a real, ordinary afternoon at the park or trail at the edge of town (this book's third recurring location), with whatever camera you own, working through the exact decisions of this chapter in the order you'd actually make them. The goal is not a single perfect frame but a method you can repeat anywhere there is motion: arrive, read the action, set up, anticipate, fire short bursts, and cull hard. Follow along as if it were your Saturday.

The brief and the constraints

The brief: spend two hours at a local park and come home with three keepers that demonstrate the chapter's range — one clean freeze at a peak, one clean pan, and one intimate wildlife frame — plus the single strongest of the three as a candidate for the Portfolio Checkpoint.

The constraints — deliberately ordinary, so this is reproducible:

  • Gear: whatever you have. We'll assume an everyday kit — a camera with a modest zoom (say up to 200mm-equivalent) — and call out the phone path at every step, because most of this works on a phone.
  • Subjects available at a typical park: kids on the playground and a skate area (peaks), a path where cyclists and joggers pass (panning), and a pond with ducks and a few bolder garden birds (wildlife).
  • Light: mid-afternoon sun, hardening toward a better golden hour near the end — so we'll plan the session around the light, saving the wildlife for last when the light warms and the animals get active.
  • Time: two hours. Enough to fail, adjust, and succeed at each of the three.

The first discipline of action photography happens before you lift the camera: you read the place and make a plan. Walk the park once with the camera down. Where do cyclists pass at a steady speed (panning)? Where does a repeating peak happen at a known spot (the top of the skate ramp, the apex of a swing, a dog catching a ball)? Where will the ducks be when the light warms? Spend ten minutes scouting. You are doing the ringside-seat thinking of Case Study 20.1 — choosing your positions before the action.

Gear and the baseline setup

Phone: put it in pro/manual mode where you can set the shutter; turn on burst (hold the shutter or volume button); enable subject/face detection. For the pan you must be able to force 1/30 s.

Set this once at the start. Then the only thing you change per phase is the shutter speed and your position — everything else (continuous AF, burst, zone area) stays put. That stability is what lets you react fast when a moment appears.

Phase 1 — The freeze at a peak (the playground/skate area)

The thinking. We start here while the light is still bright and hard — perfect for freezing, because a fast shutter needs all the light it can get. We want a peak: the apex of a swing, the top of a skate ramp, a child at the height of a jump. Per §20.5, we will not chase it; we'll pre-frame the spot and anticipate.

Setup. Pick the swing. Its peak is dead reliable — it hangs for a fraction of a second at the top of each arc, at the same place every time. Stand to the side, slightly low (kneel), so the child swings across a clean background — sky or distant trees, not the busy climbing frame. Pre-focus continuous AF on the top-of-arc spot; compose with room to swing into (open frame on the side the child is moving toward, per §20.5). Shutter at 1/1000 s to freeze the crossing motion cleanly.

The shoot. Watch three or four full swings without shooting to lock the rhythm into your body — when the child reaches the top, how the legs kick, the exact spot of the hang. Then start a short burst on the rise — the cue before the peak — so the shutter is firing as the swing reaches the top. Off the button. Wait for the next arc. Repeat. Six bursts of four frames each, not one long held burst.

  THE FRAME    A child at the very top of a swing's forward arc, legs kicked out straight, head back,
               hair lifted, hands gripping the chains — suspended against a clean wash of distant

  THE LIGHT    Bright, hard mid-afternoon sun from the front-left, carving the figure and lifting the
               hair into a bright fringe; hard enough to freeze crisply, directional enough to give the
               body dimension.
  THE MOMENT   The apex — the fraction of a second the swing hangs at full height, legs at full
               extension, before it falls back. Anticipated on the rise, not reacted to.
  THE CHOICES  ~85mm-equivalent to fill the frame from a safe side distance and soften the background;
               1/1000 s to freeze the crossing motion; continuous AF pre-locked on the peak spot; low
               kneeling angle so the child looms a little and the background is clean sky-and-trees.
  THE EFFECT   Your eye lands on the joyful face and lifted hair at the top of the figure, follows the
               line of the extended legs into the open space ahead, and *feels* the suspension. The clean
               background means nothing competes; the room-to-swing-into means the child flies rather than
               crashes into the frame edge.
  THE LESSON   The freeze keeper came from anticipation + position, not a fast shutter alone. Pre-frame
               the known peak spot, read the rhythm, and fire a short burst on the cue before the apex.

What got adjusted. The first bursts came back a touch late — the child already starting to fall, feet dropping. The fix was purely about timing: start the burst earlier, on the rise rather than near the top, trusting reaction time and lag to land the shutter on the apex. After that adjustment, one frame in roughly every second burst caught the true hang. Phone note: a phone freezes this beautifully in bright sun (fast electronic shutter); just turn on burst and use the same anticipation. Keeper 1 secured.

Phase 2 — The pan (the cycle path)

The thinking. Now the deliberate opposite of Phase 1: a slow shutter and a sweeping camera to make a sharp subject against a streaked world (§20.3). We move to the path where cyclists and joggers pass at a steady speed and constant distance — the conditions panning needs.

Setup. Stand square to the path, perpendicular to the direction of travel, where riders pass at an even distance. Drop the shutter to 1/30 s (this is the big change of the day — in bright sun the camera will stop the aperture down and drop ISO to compensate; if it can't avoid overexposure, a polarizer or a small ND helps, or wait for the light to soften). Keep continuous AF and burst on. Plant your feet, ready to rotate from the hips.

The shoot. Acquire each rider early, while they're still approaching — get them under the focus zone, let AF lock, and begin sweeping to match their speed before they're in front of you. Squeeze a short burst through the smoothest part of the sweep, and — the whole game — follow through past the click. Whisper "swing… and… foll-ooow" if it helps. Pan ten riders.

  THE FRAME    A cyclist crosses the frame left-to-right, torso and face and the bike's number tack-sharp,
               while the hedge and a parked car behind dissolve into pure horizontal streaks; the spokes

  THE LIGHT    Softening late-afternoon side light, warm, skimming the rider — pleasant rather than harsh,
               and dim enough that 1/30 s didn't overexpose.
  THE MOMENT   Mid-stroke, rider's weight forward, passing directly in front — the smoothest point of the
               sweep, where subject and camera were perfectly speed-matched.
  THE CHOICES  ~50mm-equivalent (wide enough to track easily, long enough to fill the frame); 1/30 s for a
               strongly streaked background; continuous AF riding the cyclist; a planted-feet hip-rotation
               pan with a deliberate follow-through; short burst to raise the odds of one sharp frame.
  THE EFFECT   The eye locks onto the sharp, calm rider sitting inside a world reduced to speed-lines — the
               rare double thing a pan does: a still human moving fast through a blurred world. Far more
               kinetic than any frozen version of the same rider.
  THE LESSON   Pan keepers are a numbers game won by technique: slow shutter, smooth hip-rotation, and
               above all the follow-through. Two keepers out of ~sixty frames is normal and fine.

What got adjusted. Two things. First, the earliest pans were soft everywhere — the classic flinch-stop at the shutter press; the fix was a conscious, exaggerated follow-through. Second, in the still-bright early attempts the background wasn't streaking enough at the meter's chosen settings, so the photographer simply waited twenty minutes for the light to soften, which let 1/30 s expose correctly and the backgrounds finally smeared properly. Out of about sixty frames across the riders, two were genuinely sharp-subject pans. Phone note: in pro mode at 1/30 s, braced elbows, this works — and dusk makes it easier by forcing the slow shutter. Keeper 2 secured.

Phase 3 — The intimate wildlife frame (the pond, golden hour)

The thinking. We saved this for last on purpose: the light is now warm and low (best of the day), and the ducks and garden birds are most active at the edges of the day. We have no long lens, so per §20.4 the strategy is not reach — it's the approach: get genuinely close to tolerant subjects, low and slow.

Setup. Go back to 1/1000 s (birds move fast and the light is dropping, so let ISO float up to hold the shutter). Continuous AF with animal/eye detection if the camera has it. Then sit down at the pond edge, get low — at the ducks' eye level — and wait. Do not chase. Let the birds decide you're furniture and drift closer.

The shoot. Patience is the technique here. For the first ten minutes the ducks keep their distance; you shoot a few frames to dial exposure but mostly wait. As they habituate, two paddle in close. Now you have peaks even here — a duck upending to feed (a repeating action with a clear peak: tail up, the moment of the tip), a wing-flap, a head-shake throwing droplets. Anticipate these exactly as you anticipated the swing: read the rhythm, fire a short burst on the cue.

               water (intimacy, dignity — Chapter 13's lesson applied to an animal); 1/1000 s to freeze the
               droplets, ISO floated up as the light fell; continuous AF with eye detection holding the
               eye; the patient sit that let the duck come close enough to fill the frame.
  THE EFFECT   The sharp, catchlit eye meets yours; the frozen droplets and rim light make an ordinary
               park duck look wild and luminous; the warm golden bokeh isolates it completely. Proximity
               and patience, not reach, made it.
  THE LESSON   With no long lens, the wildlife keeper came from the APPROACH — low, slow, patient, eye
               level — plus the same anticipation used on the swing. Light timing (golden hour) did the
               rest.

What got adjusted. The first close frames were shot from a standing angle, looking down — they looked like snapshots of a duck. Getting down to the water's eye level transformed them, exactly as Chapter 13 predicts for people. And ISO had to climb (the light was falling) to hold 1/1000 s for the droplets; a slightly grainy sharp frame beat a clean blurry one, every time (§20.1). Phone note: a phone can't reach a distant bird, but a close, habituated duck at eye level in golden light is well within a phone's range — this is the phone's best wildlife play. Keeper 3 secured.

When it goes wrong: the field contingencies

A real session is mostly small problems solved on the fly. Here are the ones that actually come up across these three phases, and the move that fixes each — so that when they happen to you, you adjust instead of going home empty.

  • "It's too bright to pan." In strong sun, the meter can't expose 1/30 s even at the smallest aperture and lowest ISO — frames blow out white. Moves, in order: drop ISO to its base; stop the aperture down; fit a polarizer (costs ~1–2 stops and kills glare) or a neutral-density filter (the proper tool — it's just sunglasses for the lens); or simply wait for the light to soften toward evening, which is what we did in Phase 2. Panning and bright midday sun are natural enemies; plan the pan for softer light.

  • "My continuous AF keeps grabbing the wrong thing." On the cycle path it locks onto a foreground railing or a closer jogger instead of your subject. Move: tighten the AF-area from Wide to Zone/Group, or go to single-point and keep the point on the subject yourself; on a path, single-point works because the path is predictable. Re-acquire by lifting off the shutter and half-pressing again on the subject.

  • "The ducks won't come close." Some days the wildlife simply won't cooperate. Moves: be more patient (the twenty-minute sit, Phase 3); use cover (a bench, a tree, the car as a blind); come back at a better hour (dawn/dusk, feeding times); or accept a wider "animal in its environment" frame instead of a tight portrait — a smaller animal in beautiful golden light and clean habitat is its own kind of keeper. What you do not do is chase them; chasing guarantees the worst of both — no shot and a stressed animal.

  • "ISO is climbing into ugly noise." As the light fell in Phase 3, holding 1/1000 s for the droplets pushed ISO high. Move: accept it — a sharp, slightly grainy frame beats a clean blurry one every time (§20.1), and modern noise reduction (Chapter 26) cleans a lot of it later. Only if the action allows do you trade some shutter speed back (e.g. for a still perched bird, 1/250 s is plenty and buys cleaner ISO).

  • "I filled the buffer and missed a play." Holding the burst too long on the skate ramp jammed the camera mid-write. Move: shorter, aimed bursts (§20.6); switch a long sport run to JPEG so the buffer goes deeper; and trust anticipation so you need fewer frames per peak.

The meta-lesson: an action session is a sequence of adjustments, not a single correct setup. The photographer who comes home with keepers is the one who diagnosed each problem in the field and changed one thing — not the one who had perfect settings from the first frame.

The edit pass

Home with roughly 350 frames across the three phases. Now the unglamorous, decisive half (§20.6):

  1. Fast reject pass. Blow through everything; delete the obvious failures — soft focus, missed peaks, stopped pans, blinking kids, ducks facing away. Most of the 350 die here in a few minutes. Be ruthless.
  2. Best-of-burst. Within each short burst, keep the one frame with the peak shape / sharpest subject / cleanest background and drop the near-identical siblings. The swing burst that caught the true hang; the one pan that's genuinely sharp; the duck frame with the catchlight and the droplets.
  3. Slow-look the survivors. Now judge the dozen or so keepers as photographs (Chapter 31's slow looking): which has the moment, the gesture, the clean frame, the feeling? Land on your three — one freeze, one pan, one wildlife.
  4. Pick the Portfolio candidate. Of the three, which is strongest as an image? Often it's the one where the light, the peak, and the framing all aligned — frequently the golden-hour duck or the streaked rider. That one is your Portfolio Checkpoint candidate.

From 350 frames to three keepers and one portfolio candidate. That ratio is not failure — it is exactly what a good action session looks like.
