Chapter 2 β Further Reading
A short, honest library for the reader who wants to understand the instrument more deeply. You do not need a single item here to finish this book or to take great photographs β the whole argument of Chapter 2 is that the machine is simpler than it looks, and that the eye matters more than the gear. But if opening the box left you curious about how the box works, these are the places to feed that curiosity. Each entry says what it is, which tier of trust it carries (see the book's citation honesty note), and which reader it serves. Nothing here is required; everything here is genuinely worth your time.
A word before you start: there is a specific trap in this corner of photography. Camera technology has a thriving culture of specification-chasing β endless reviews comparing megapixels, dynamic-range charts, and the latest body against last year's. Read a little of it for fluency, then put it down. Understanding the digital image (for the curious β the π¬ Physics reader)
- Your camera or phone's own manual β the "image quality," "file format," and "sensor" sections. Genuinely the single most valuable thing on this list. Find where your specific instrument sets RAW vs. JPEG, what its native ISO range is, what its sensor size and focal lengths actually are, and how to place a focus point. - A simple histogram and "image info" / metadata viewer (built into nearly every photo app and your computer's file viewer).
