Seeing questions — what's wrong with this photograph?

24. Diagnose this described frame and prescribe the fix: "A black-and-white portrait. The subject wears a charcoal sweater and stands against a slate-gray wall in flat overcast light. The face is sharp and well exposed, but the body merges into the wall and the whole image feels flat — there is no true black or true white anywhere." Name the two distinct problems and give a specific fix for each.

25. Diagnose this described frame and prescribe the fix: "A photographer wanted a silhouette of a person against a bright sunset sky. They pointed the camera at the scene and let it expose automatically. The result: the sky is a nice mid-gray and the person is a muddy dark gray with some blotchy detail — not a clean black shape, not a detailed portrait, but an unsatisfying in-between." (2) Flat, no anchor: there's no true black or true white, so the image is muddy mid-gray — fix by introducing a small patch of genuine black and genuine white (a deep shadow, a bright highlight, or by increasing contrast) to anchor the tonal range.
  25. Metering problem: the camera averaged the bright sky and dark person toward middle gray, landing both in an unsatisfying in-between — neither a clean black shape nor a detailed face. The photographer failed to decide what tone the subject should be. Two clean choices: (a) for a true silhouette, meter the bright sky (or dial −1 to −2 EV) so the person goes pure black — committing to shape; or (b) for a detailed backlit portrait, meter the face (or dial +1 to +2 EV) and let the sky blow brighter — committing to the subject. Either is strong; the muddy middle is the failure.
  26. The red kayak and green river are opposite in hue (high color contrast) but close in value (both roughly mid-tone), and a black-and-white conversion keeps only value differences — so with the color gone there was almost no tonal contrast left, and the kayak merged into the water (a tonal merger). Two fixes: at capture, separate them tonally — wait for or find light that makes the kayak brighter or the water darker (a shaft of sun on the kayak, the river in shade), or shoot from an angle that puts a different-toned background behind it. In conversion (Ch.28), use channel control to darken the greens (or lighten the reds) so the kayak's gray pulls away from the water's gray. Either restores the separation that hue alone was providing.

Missed more than a few in the §8.5 row? Re-read the Zone System section and do Exercises 8.13–8.17 — the "meter wants everything to be Zone V" idea is the single most useful thing in the chapter.
