   SENSOR SIZE →  how BIG each photosite is.   Drives low-light quality + tonal smoothness.

   Same megapixels, bigger sensor  =  bigger buckets  =  more light per well
                                   =  cleaner shadows, less noise, more recoverable detail.

   Buy on sensor size and lens quality, NOT megapixel count.
   And remember: sensor size sets a CEILING you're operating far below anyway.

Iron rule: You cannot un-bake a JPEG. In any light that makes you uncertain, turn on RAW. You don't have to process it today — but you'll have the negative if you need it.

Buy by USE, not by type. Ask: How much will I carry daily? How much do I shoot in the dark? Do I need distant subjects? What's my real budget with lenses? The use picks the type — and the answer might be a phone.


Holding steady — the free sharpness upgrade

   Most "blurry" photos = camera shake, not bad focus. The fix costs nothing:
