Case Study 18.2 — Shoot-Along: One Building on a City Block, From Record Shot to Portfolio Frame

This case study is the opposite of the last one. Case Study 18.1 took apart a finished masterpiece; this one builds an architecture frame from nothing, in real time, in a location you can reach on foot. There is no famous photographer here and no fabricated image — only the thinking, the mistakes, and the decisions of a complete shoot, the way it actually unfolds. Everything below is a constructed teaching shoot: the building, the frames, and the problems are illustrative, chosen so every technique in the chapter gets used where it actually bites. Walk it with your own building.
The brief and the constraints
The brief: make one strong, portfolio-worthy photograph of an interesting building on a city block near you — verticals true, line and space deliberate, the structure itself the subject. Bring home the Portfolio Checkpoint frame.
The location: the book's recurring city block / busy intersection — somewhere you can walk to. For this shoot, picture a six-story early-20th-century brick building on a corner: ground-floor shopfronts, five floors of regularly-spaced windows above, a decorative cornice along the roofline, and a strong vertical corner where two façades meet. (Substitute your own: a library, a courthouse, an old warehouse, a modern glass office, even your own apartment block. The thinking transfers to any of them.)
The constraints (deliberately realistic):
- It is a working block. There are parked cars, street signs, a traffic light, pedestrians, and overhead wires — the everyday clutter that sneaks into architectural frames.
- You cannot get far back: the street across from the building is only so wide, and behind you is another building. Stepping back to shoot level is partly available, not fully.
- You're shooting in the late afternoon, with golden hour and then blue hour coming — so you have a window of changing light to plan around.
- Gear: whatever you have. The whole shoot is written so a phone does every step; a camera with a wide and a short-telephoto lens does it too. A small tripod helps for the blue-hour finish but isn't required for the daylight frames.

The two settings that matter most here aren't in the exposure at all: the grid/level is on, and you're shooting RAW so perspective correction and recovery have room to work.
Setup: scout the block before you raise the camera
Architecture rewards the photographer who walks the subject first. Before a single frame, you circle the building once, looking — not shooting. Here is the scout, as a top-down map of the decisions.

Walking it, you make four decisions:
- Which façade and which light? The front of the building faces roughly west, so it will catch warm, raking golden-hour light as the sun drops — that's your "hero" face. The south side stays lit longest. The north side is in shade all afternoon (flat, less interesting today). Decision: feature the west front at golden hour, and use the corner where west meets south.
- Where can you stand? Three vantages (Figure CS18.2a): [A] as far back as the narrow street allows (for a level, whole-building frame); [B] at the corner across the street (for a two-point-perspective shot where both faces recede); [C] at the base of the wall (for looking-up details and abstracts).
- What's the clutter, and what will you do about it? A traffic light and two street signs clog the front; a parked delivery van sits at the corner; wires cross above the cornice. Decision: from [A] you can frame above the signs; the van will hopefully move; the wires you'll either exclude by cropping tighter or accept and clean later.
- What's the structure? Five floors of regular windows = strong repetition (§18.1). The corner = a strong vertical line. The cornice = a calm horizontal. The geometry is rectilinear and rhythmic. Decision: the photograph is about the rhythm of the windows and the strength of the corner, lit by raking golden light.
🎞️ Behind the Image: (A constructed but representative vignette.) On the scout you notice something you'd have missed if you'd just shot from the first spot: from vantage [B] at the corner, a single top-floor window is open, its curtain catching the light, while every other window is shut. That one open window is the break in the repetition (§18.1) — the detail that could turn a competent building photo into a frame with a story. You file it away and plan to feature it. The scout didn't just find your vantage; it found your subject.
The shoot, in phases
Phase 1 — The record shot (and why it disappoints)
You start, as everyone does, with the obvious frame: stand across the street, point the phone at the whole building, tip it up to fit the cornice, shoot. Here's the result.

THE FRAME The whole six-story front, but the building leans back hard — the two visible edges race
toward each other near the top, the cornice tilts, and a traffic light and a street sign jut
into the lower frame. A pale, slightly washed sky fills the top corners.
THE LIGHT Late afternoon but not yet golden — the light is bright and a little flat on the west face,
the sky pale.
THE MOMENT None chosen; just "I'm standing here, here's the building."
THE CHOICES Phone main camera, tilted up ~20° to fit the top; no level used; everything in frame.
THE EFFECT The building falls over backwards (keystoning, §18.2); the signs clutter the bottom; the eye
has nowhere to land. A real-estate agent would reject it.
THE LESSON This is the photograph everyone takes and no one remembers. Every problem in it is fixable,
and fixing them is the rest of this shoot.
You look at it and diagnose, using the chapter: converging verticals from tilting up (§18.2); clutter in the frame (§18.4/§18.5); flat light because golden hour hasn't arrived (§18.5); no structure featured (§18.1). Good. Now you fix them one at a time.
Phase 2 — Fix the verticals
First the geometry. You try the §18.2 ladder of fixes in order.
Can you step back and shoot level? You retreat to vantage [A], as far as the street allows, hold the phone level (the on-screen level line snaps green — sensor vertical, not tilted up), and shoot. The verticals are now true. But from this far, level, the very top of the cornice is just cut off, and there's a lot of empty pavement at the bottom.
Can you gain height? There's a café across the street with a second-floor window. You can't get in, but you raise the phone overhead on a stick (or simply hold it as high as you can) to lift the vantage toward the building's mid-height. That helps — less tilt needed.
Compose loose and correct in software. The pragmatic answer: from vantage [A], shoot level, leave the slightly-cut cornice for now, and plan to use perspective correction to fine-tune. You shoot RAW so the correction has data. You take care to keep the camera square left-to-right too (not rotated), using the building's corner as your plumb reference.
⚠️ Common Mistake (caught live): On the first level frame you realize the phone is level up-and-down but slightly rotated — the horizon of the rooflines tilts a few degrees. That sideways tilt is harder to fix than the up-tilt. You reshoot, watching both axes of the level until the cornice runs truly horizontal and the corner truly vertical. Get it square in camera; don't make software do what your hands can do for free.
Phase 3 — Work the structure (the corner and the rhythm)
Now you move to the subject you found on the scout. From vantage [B] at the corner, two façades meet at the strong vertical edge and both recede away — two-point perspective, the most useful architectural vantage. You compose so the corner runs down the frame, the rhythm of windows marches away on both faces, and — crucially — that one open top-floor window sits on a rule-of-thirds power point (Chapter 6, §6.2). The delivery van has, mercifully, moved.

THE FRAME The building's corner edge runs as a strong vertical near the left third. The west face
recedes to the right; the south face recedes to the left. Five floors of regular windows
march away on both faces — a clean rhythm. Near the top right, one open window with a lit
curtain breaks the pattern, sitting on a power point.
THE LIGHT Golden hour now — the low west sun rakes warm light ACROSS the brick, so every course of
brick and the carved cornice catch the light and cast tiny shadows. The texture pops; the
brick glows orange; the sky behind has deepened to a clean blue.
THE MOMENT The golden-hour light at its richest, and the one open window with its curtain caught — the
human trace that gives the rhythm a story.
THE CHOICES Phone main camera, held level (corner true vertical); composed for two-point perspective with
the open window on a third; exposed for the bright brick and sky (histogram checked — sky not
clipping); daylight WB to keep the warmth; RAW.
THE EFFECT The eye enters on the strong lit corner, travels up to the one open window, then is carried
along the marching window-rhythm into depth on both faces. The raking light makes the brick
three-dimensional. The building reads as solid, rhythmic, and alive.
THE LESSON Working the scene (Chapter 9) plus seeing structure (§18.1) plus golden-hour raking light
(§18.5) turns "a building" into a photograph with a subject, a story, and depth.
This is the strong frame. Notice everything that went into it that the record shot lacked: a deliberate vantage (the corner), the structure featured (corner line + window rhythm), the break placed on a power point (the open window), raking golden light revealing texture, true verticals, and a clean frame (you waited for the van and framed above the signs). Every fix from Phases 1–2 paid off here.
Phase 4 — Hunt the abstracts and details
While the golden light holds, you spend ten minutes at vantage [C], the base of the wall, hunting the abstract building (§18.6) for backup frames and portfolio variety.

THE FRAME A tight crop of the brick wall and one window's stone surround — no sky, no ground, no
context. Just the grid of brick courses and the geometry of the window frame.
THE LIGHT The low golden sun grazes the wall almost parallel to its surface, so every brick edge and
mortar line throws a tiny shadow — the wall becomes a relief map of texture, glowing warm.
THE MOMENT The few minutes when the sun is low enough to rake the surface; ten minutes later it's behind
a building and the texture vanishes.
THE CHOICES Phone main camera straight-on and level so the brick courses stay horizontal; cropped tight
to pure pattern and texture; exposed for the bright lit brick.
THE EFFECT An abstract of pure pattern, line, and texture — the building barely recognizable as a
building. The raking light is the entire image.
THE LESSON The red-door lesson at building scale (Chapter 1): there are no boring surfaces, only boring
light. The same wall is dead in flat light and electric in raking light.
You also shoot straight up the corner for a dramatic converging-verticals abstract (breaking §18.2's rule on purpose, §18.3), and straight down at the geometric shadow the cornice throws on the sidewalk. Variety banked.
Phase 5 — Wait for blue hour (the bonus frame)
The sun sets. Most photographers pack up here; the building is in shade, the golden light is gone, and there seems to be nothing left to shoot. You stay, because you know §18.5: the best is ten minutes away. As the sky deepens toward blue hour, the shopfront lights and a few apartment windows switch on, and the building begins to glow against the cobalt sky — the magic condition. The window-to-sky contrast that was impossible at noon is now within a stop or two, so a single long exposure can hold the warm lit windows and the deep blue sky at once (exactly the principle of Figure 18.5, scaled to a street).
You return to vantage [A] for this one, because you want the whole front glowing, and you brace the phone rock-steady on a low wall (a small tripod if you brought one — blue-hour exposures get long). Here is the result.

THE FRAME The full six-story front, verticals true, set against a deep cobalt sky. The ground-floor
shopfronts glow warm yellow; scattered apartment windows are lit amber up the façade; the
cornice catches a last cool edge of skylight. The street below carries soft reflections of
the shop lights on the damp pavement.
THE LIGHT Two balanced worlds, the §18.4 interior/exterior contrast at city scale. WARM: the shop and
apartment lights, golden against the brick. COOL: the deep even blue of the post-sunset sky,
bright enough to read as "evening" but not blown. The two sit within a stop or two, so one
long exposure holds both.
THE MOMENT The ~15-minute band of blue hour — the sky dark enough that the building's lights blaze, light
enough that the sky glows cobalt rather than dead black. A short, unrepeatable window.
THE CHOICES Phone main camera, level (verticals true), braced on a wall; a multi-second exposure to
gather the low light; ISO low to stay clean; daylight/warm WB so the shop lights stay golden
against the blue; RAW. Composed to include a little wet-pavement reflection for depth.
THE EFFECT Quieter and moodier than the golden-hour corner — the building reads as alive and inhabited,
glowing against twilight. The warm/cool contrast does the emotional work; the true verticals
keep it calm and stable.
THE LESSON The photographers who stay ten minutes past sunset get the frame everyone else missed. Blue
hour shrinks the dynamic-range gap until a building's warm lights and a deep sky balance in
one honest exposure. The best architecture tool is patience.
It's a genuinely different photograph from the golden-hour corner — that one is about raking light and texture and the corner's geometry; this one is about the building as a glowing, inhabited thing against the dusk. You keep it as a strong alternative, and the choice between them becomes a real portfolio decision (Discussion Question 4).
The edit pass
Back home, you cull and finish. The workflow (developed fully in Chapter 26):
- Cull to the contenders. From ~40 frames, you keep four: the golden-hour corner (CS18.2c), the brick texture (CS18.2d), the looking-up abstract, and the blue-hour frame. The record shot (CS18.2b) is kept only as a "before."
- Perspective correction. On the golden-hour corner, you open the transform/perspective tool, pull the slight residual lean to true vertical using the corner edge as the reference, then back off ~10% so it doesn't look over-stretched (§18.2). You re-crop the corner the correction ate into.
- Global develop. Set white balance to keep the golden warmth honest; lift shadows slightly so the shaded south face holds detail; pull highlights so the brightest brick and sky don't clip; a touch of contrast and clarity to let the raking texture sing.
- Clean the clutter. One overhead wire crosses the top corner; you remove it with a healing/clone tool (a minor, honest cleanup — moving a distraction, not changing the building; the ethics line is Chapter 29). The street sign you'd framed above, so nothing to remove there.
- Final crop. Tighten so the open window sits exactly on the power point and the corner anchors the left third.
The finished golden-hour corner is the Portfolio Checkpoint frame: true verticals, deliberate line and space, the structure as subject, a story in the one open window. The blue-hour frame is your backup.

Scout first (circle it, find the light, the vantages, the clutter, and the break in its structure). Shoot the deliberately-bad record shot so you have a "before."
