Case Study 4.2 — Shoot-Along: Building a Shallow-Focus Still Life at the Kitchen Window

This is a production case study, not an analysis. Where Case Study 4.1 took a finished masterpiece apart, here we build an image from nothing — one shallow-depth-of-field still life — at the most available studio in the world, the kitchen window (one of this book's four recurring locations). You can do every step of this on foot, today, with a camera or a phone. The point is to watch the three levers of depth of field (§4.2), autofocus and manual focus (§4.3–§4.4), and selective focus as storytelling (§4.5) become a sequence of real decisions — and to produce, by the end, the exact image the chapter's Portfolio Checkpoint asks for.

Everything below is a constructed, representative shoot — an illustrative walkthrough, not a record of a specific session — so you can follow the reasoning and reproduce it.

The brief and the constraints

The brief: make one quiet, beautiful still life in which a single small object is rendered tack-sharp against a background dissolved into soft color and bokeh — an image good enough to enter the Portfolio as this chapter's shallow-focus keeper.

The constraints, on purpose:

  • One window for light. No flash, no studio. (We make light later in the book; here we use what the window gives.)
  • One small subject with character — something with texture and a catchable highlight. We will use a single ripe strawberry on a wooden board, but a teacup, a ring, a key, a flower, a small toy all work identically.
  • One afternoon hour, soft indirect light (we'll pick the time deliberately).
  • It must work on a phone as well as a camera — so every camera step has its phone twin.

The whole challenge is restraint: one sharp thing, everything else gone. That is harder than it sounds, and it is exactly the discipline §4.5 named.

Gear and a starting point

You need almost nothing: a camera or phone, the longest focal length you have, and something to stand the subject on. Two optional helpers earn their keep — a small piece of white card or foil (a reflector to bounce light into the shadow side) and a dark cloth or board (to put behind the subject if your real background is ugly). A tripod is nice but not required; in soft window light you can usually hand-hold.

Why these: the subject is static (so AF-S/single), and we want shallow DoF (so widest aperture, longest lens, and — coming next — close distance with the background far behind).

The setup: arranging distance, the free lever

Before a single frame, we arrange the scene to do most of the depth-of-field work for us — because distance, not aperture, is the lever beginners underuse (§4.2's Common Mistake).

The decisions baked into that diagram:

  1. Subject near the window, side-lit. We place the strawberry just inside the window so soft light rakes across it from the side — the §1.4 lesson — revealing the dimples in the skin and putting a small specular highlight on the curve. Front light would flatten it; side light shapes it.
  2. A big gap behind the subject. This is the move. We put as much distance as possible between the strawberry and whatever is behind it (here, ≥ 1.5–2 m to a far wall). That single choice — the background-distance lever — is what will let even a modest aperture melt the background. A subject shoved against a wall can never have a dissolved background; a subject floating in front of a distant one melts it easily.
  3. Camera low and at the subject's level. Shooting down at a tabletop subject puts the table directly behind it (near, hard to blur, distracting). Dropping to the subject's eye level puts the distant room behind it instead — far, easy to dissolve. Same subject, but the background went from "tabletop a few centimetres away" to "wall two metres away."
  4. A reflector on the shadow side. The white card bounces a little window light back into the dark side of the strawberry so the shadows do not go black. Optional, but it lifts the image instantly.

Phone setup is identical — the geometry is the lever, not the gear. Place the subject near the window, leave a big gap behind it, get down to its level. The phone's deep native depth of field means you will lean on distance and the telephoto lens (or Portrait mode) harder than a camera would — which is the whole reason we built the gap.

🔄 A quick gut-check before shooting: ask the three-lever questions out loud. Aperture — widest, yes. Distance — am I close to the subject and is the background far behind? Focal length — longest I have? If all three are pushed toward shallow, the background will dissolve. If the background stubbornly stays sharp later, the answer is almost always distance, not aperture.

The shoot, in phases

Phase 1 — The safe frame (establish focus and exposure)

We start conservative: get one frame that is correctly exposed and critically sharp on the subject, before chasing the extreme look. Aperture-Priority at f/2.8, single-point AF placed dead on the brightest, most detailed part of the strawberry — the highlighted shoulder near the stem — half-press, confirm, shoot.

  THE FRAME    The strawberry sits center-frame on the board, sharp; the far room behind is softened but
               still a little readable — you can tell there's a wall and a shape that might be a plant.
  THE LIGHT    Side light from the window models the fruit nicely; the shadow side is a touch dark (no
               reflector yet). A clean specular highlight sits on the upper curve.
  THE MOMENT   Static. We're confirming the technical base, not chasing a moment.
  THE CHOICES  f/2.8, ~50mm-equivalent, AF-S single point on the lit shoulder. Background present but
               receding.
  THE EFFECT   Pleasant, controlled, a little ordinary. The subject is clearly the subject, but the
               background hasn't fully dissolved and the composition is dead-center.
  THE LESSON   Get a sharp, correctly-exposed base frame first; *then* push for the look. You can't fix
               focus in editing — nail it now, refine everything else from here.

What we adjust going in to Phase 2: the background is too readable (we want it gone), the composition is too centered, and the shadow side wants a little fill.

Phase 2 — Push the three levers to dissolve the background

Now we commit to the shallow look. Three changes, one per lever:

  • Aperture: open from f/2.8 to the widest we have (say f/1.8).
  • Distance: move physically closer to the strawberry so it grows larger in the frame — closer focus distance means shallower DoF — while the far wall stays put, so the background-to-subject gap (in relative terms) grows.
  • Focal length: if a longer lens is available, switch to it (or zoom in), magnifying the already-soft background into a smoother wash.

We also slide the strawberry off-center (a Chapter 6 preview — the rule of thirds) and tuck the white card just out of frame on the shadow side.

  THE FRAME    The strawberry sits on a power point, lower-left, filling more of the frame now. Behind it,
               the room has dissolved completely into a smooth gradient of soft color — no wall, no plant,
               just warm and cool blur, with one or two soft bright orbs where window light catches
               something distant.
  THE LIGHT    Same window light, now with the card bouncing fill into the shadow side — the dark side of
               the fruit lifts, the dimpled texture reads all the way around.
  THE MOMENT   Static, but considered — the highlight, the texture, and the soft background all aligned.
  THE CHOICES  f/1.8, longest focal length, moved in close, subject off-center, reflector in. All three
               levers + distance stacked.
  THE EFFECT   The eye is now *locked* on the strawberry — it is the only sharp thing in a frame of soft
               color, and the bokeh orbs give the background life without a single distraction. This reads
               as a "real photograph," and the difference from Phase 1 was entirely focus and distance.
  THE LESSON   Stacking the three levers — and especially closing the subject-to-camera distance while the
               background stays far — is what turns "subject in front of a soft-ish background" into "subject
               floating in pure color." Distance did as much as aperture.

This is already a keeper-grade frame. But a good shoot does not stop at the first success — it explores.

Phase 3 — Where exactly is the focal plane? (and the macro trap)

At f/1.8 this close, the depth of field is now very thin — perhaps a centimetre. That is a feature and a hazard. A feature, because we can place that sliver of sharpness with surgical intent: on the seeds near the stem, or on the front face, or on the single water droplet we add with a fingertip. A hazard, because if we focus a hair off, the front of the strawberry blurs while the middle is sharp, and it looks like a mistake rather than a choice.

So we slow down and focus deliberately. This is where the manual-focus aids from §4.4 earn their place:

  • Switch to manual focus, punch in to magnified live view, and turn the ring until focus peaking paints its shimmer exactly on the detail we want sharpest — the water droplet. Now we know it is sharp, rather than hoping.
  • Or, staying in autofocus, place the single AF point precisely on the droplet and confirm at 100% on the rear screen.
  • Phone: tap exactly on the droplet, then tap-and-hold to lock so a breath of movement doesn't send focus hunting; if your phone has pro-mode manual focus with peaking, use it.

  THE FRAME    Tighter still. A single water droplet on the strawberry's shoulder is knife-sharp, acting as
               a tiny lens; the seeds immediately around it are sharp; the rest of the fruit softens toward
               the edges and the background is total creamy color.
  THE LIGHT    The droplet catches a bright pinpoint of window light — a specular highlight inside the
               drop — which becomes the brightest, sharpest point in the frame.
  THE MOMENT   The considered placement of the thin focal plane on the one detail that rewards it.
  THE CHOICES  f/1.8, manual focus via magnified view + peaking on the droplet, ~1 cm of total depth of
               field placed with intent.
  THE EFFECT   The eye snaps to the glittering droplet instantly — sharpest + brightest + smallest — and
               the paper-thin sharpness makes the image feel almost macro, intimate, jewel-like.
  THE LESSON   At a wide aperture up close, depth of field is so thin that *where* you place the plane is
               the entire game. Manual focus with peaking/magnification turns a gamble into a placed,
               repeatable decision. This is the §4.4 lesson made physical.

Phase 4 — A deliberate contrast frame (so we understand what we chose)

Before we finish, we shoot the opposite — the same strawberry at f/11, everything sharp — not because we want it for the Portfolio, but because seeing the deep-DoF version makes the shallow choice legible. Side by side, the f/11 frame shows the whole cluttered room behind the fruit and the eye wanders; the f/1.8 frame isolates. The contrast is the lesson: neither is wrong, but only one says "look here." (And note: at f/11 in this dim indoor light, the shutter slows enough that we now need the tripod or a higher ISO — a Chapter 3 trade-off arriving on cue.)

The edit pass

The capture did the real work; editing only finishes it. A light touch (full digital-darkroom craft is Part VI):

  1. Confirm focus first. Zoom to 100% and verify the droplet/eye is critically sharp. If it's soft, no edit saves it — this is why we shot many frames. Pick the sharpest.
  2. Exposure and white balance. Nudge brightness so the highlight on the fruit is bright but not blown (read the histogram — Chapter 3); warm the white balance slightly if the window light went cool.
  3. A gentle contrast and clarity lift on the subject to make the texture sing — but not on the background, which should stay soft. (Local adjustments are Chapter 25/26.)
  4. Tiny cleanup. Remove a stray crumb or dust speck near the subject. Nothing that changes reality — just tidying (the ethics line is Chapter 29).
  5. Crop to put the subject firmly on a power point if it drifted (Chapter 6).

The finished frame is the Phase 3 image, lightly developed: a single strawberry, a glittering droplet tack-sharp, the world behind it dissolved into warm and cool color. Made at a kitchen window, in an hour, with a window and a piece of card.

Discussion questions

  1. We claimed distance did as much as aperture to dissolve the background. Looking at the Phase 1 → Phase 2 change, which single adjustment do you think contributed most, and why? How would you test it?
  2. At f/1.8 this close, the depth of field was about a centimetre. When is that paper-thin sharpness a gift, and when is it a liability? How did the manual-focus aids (§4.4) change which one it was?
  3. We deliberately shot a contrasting f/11 "everything sharp" frame we had no intention of keeping. What did that frame teach that the shallow frames alone could not?
  4. The whole shoot used one window and no flash. What did that constraint force that an unlimited lighting kit might have let us avoid — and was the constraint, on balance, good for the picture?

Your turn — extend the shoot

Repeat this shoot-along with a subject that has a clear "near eye" equivalent — a point that obviously must be the sharp one. A small figurine with eyes, a watch with a second hand, a flower with a single central stamen, or (with permission) a person. Build the same setup: soft side light from a window, a big gap to the background, camera at the subject's level, widest aperture and longest lens. Then make the §4.4 move deliberately — place the thin focal plane on the one point that matters, using eye-detect AF, a single AF point, or manual focus with peaking. Shoot at least twenty frames; keep the one where that point is unmistakably sharp and the background is unmistakably gone. That frame is your Chapter 4 Portfolio keeper.
